Read Full ReviewThere are 21 hostels reffered as "Halls of residence". Depend on course you will get single, double or triple room. All hostels have high speed Wi-Fi connections. Regular maintenence also done. Mess food is very bad in some of Hostels. Cost for Hostel is generally affordable for students.
Campus life is very diverse , offering uniqui academics, extracurricular activities. The Social life at IIT Kharagpur is also good. Some of the popular club of IIT Kharagpur are: 1) Technology Club, 2) Cultural Clubs, 3) Sports and Fitness club. IIT kgp has top-notch infrastructure. key facilities include: Academic buildings, Hostels, Sports facilities ans many more The campus also has medical facilities, banks,shooping canters within Campus. Overall , the campus life at IIT kgp is well rounded, offering students the opportunaity to grow both personally and profesionally.
Read Full ReviewFor 1st year students they are provided hostel of triple sharing having all kind of facilities that a student may need including chair, bed,fan and dress wardrobe.evry weekend cleaning is done in the room by staff members block wise. 1st year students meal is little off the taste because they cook for around 1000 students in a single mess,but the menu is quite impressive including all the varieties of food being served and has a weekly chat for which food will serve when,we get breakfast then lunch then evening snacks and at last dinner. For registration of hostel and message is compulsary for all students and it is done through website portal of iit kharagpur. Mess fee is quite affordable and cheap as compared to what we are served on day to day basis. From 2nd year students will be shifted to another hostel where food quality increases and facilities increases.student may get single room also depending on which hostel they get.
Campus life at IIT Kharagpur is vibrant and diverse, offering students numerous opportunities to engage in social activities and club involvement. The campus hosts several annual and technical festivals, such as "Kshitij" (the techno-management fest held in January) and "Spring Fest" (the social and cultural festival held in January or February). The "Technology Students' Gymkhana" plays a central role in managing various student clubs, including societies for dramatics, debating, and entrepreneurship. The campus library is well-stocked, providing a wide range of books and journals that are easily accessible to students. Read Full ReviewHostel provide you one table, one chair, fan almira and good quality room. Washing mechine fully Automatic and semi Automatics both depend on your hostel. RO filtered water, and good quality washroooms. The food of mess is good. You get veg and non-veg both type of food. Registeration to hostel is not tough you have to submit a basic form that given in hostel itself and write basic details and they give you room. Allotment of hostel is done by ERP system. You have to see your hall in college website and go there and get the room. Around college there is very less chance to get PG. But there is no need to think for that. Hostels are good.
There are multiple Fest cultural, tech, sports, space related and many more variety of field. Spring Fest Annual social and cultural fest, Kshitij Techno-Management Fest, NSSC biggest Astro-Tech fest, Shaurya Sports fest, Other than these there are many other Popular one is Inter IIT. There are many more. Central Library of IIT Kgp is one of the largest and finest techanical library in asia. Facilities and technological provisions withhin class room are great, there is no point of doubt. There are alot of societies and club in variety of filds, nothing is remain. You can explore anything by joining these societies, The exposure is Fabulous.

Ranking: IIT Kharagpur Overall ranking by NIRF is 6 out of 200 colleges in India in 2022 and it was 6 out of 200 colleges in India in 2021. IIT Kharagpur Architecture ranking by NIRF is 3 out of 30 colleges in India in 2022 and it was 3 out of 25 colleges in India in 2021.

Faculty: Most of the faculty are PhD holders from globally renowned and have amazing research achievements. The IIT has won two Bhatnagar Prizes in the last 3 years and 38 Academy Fellows. The faculty members have published more than 1000 research papers collectively within close to 800 conference papers published in proceedings of national and international conferences.
Extracurricular activities: IIT Kharagpur has a rich extracurricular culture and has amazing facilities to promote the same. Some of these include Aquatic Center, Basketball Courts, Tennis Courts, Volleyball Courts, Indoor Squash Court, Indoor Badminton Courts, and a very well equipped Gymnasium.
Clubs: IIT Kharagpur has many societies to promote diverse cultures like
Dramatics Societies namely, Technology Dramatics Society- Pravah (Hindi), Encore (English), Prasthanam (Telugu), Druheen (Bengali)

If you aren’t sure about specialization, choosing IIT Kharagpur MBA is better. The institute has a great management faculty base. Almost all IITs are excellent engineering colleges providing the best education and amenities. Yet there might be some comparisons that can be drawn based on common aspects like choice, infrastructure, and geographical location. Eventually, it’s a matter of your preferences and not the institute's worth.
For example, if you are someone who considers Academics the most important factor to determine the credibility of an institute, then IIT Kanpur is the best choice for you. It has the toughest grading system and the entire focus is on studies. So if you are excellent in academics, you will remain at the top here.
Both institutes face a certain level of locational disadvantage but IIT Kanpur is still slightly better in this aspect.
I suggest you not to score below 6.5 as CGPA 7 is a must to get admission in a good foreign university. However with a CGPA of 6.5 you can go for Government jobs. I know a friend who did not focus on CGPA and played football and today is struggling to get a good job.
It is all the more difficult to get a good CGPA after low marks in the first semester because the professors evaluate you on the basis of previous grades sometimes. However, you will get placement into a decent private company so you don’t have to worry much.
Basically, even after getting admission at a good institute like IIT KGP, you have to keep struggling to score high marks.
These colleges don’t reveal the separate weightage break-up for work experience, test scores, and other such factors. For the final shortlist, institutes such as IIT KGP, IIM C, and ISI Kolkata take these factors into consideration along with your performance in the interview. These institutes assign a good volume of weightage to the entrance examination score. So, try to improve your test score as much as possible.
A few of my friends were Institute toppers and I asked them about their study method. Most of my topper friends study just 2 days before exams in the library and then teach their friends and clear their doubts.
Another topper friend solved all the previous year question papers of the subject and uploads the solutions on the Facebook group a day before the exam. She never missed any class, had great handwriting and prepared great notes.
So basically, toppers , prepare for the exams way before most of us even begin. They are kind, selfless and are ready to help anyone who is unable to cope up.
Ultimately, every student has his unique way of studying.
There are a number of things that distinguish IIT Kharagpur from other IITs. My answer entails such attributes only.
- Movies at subsidized rates: There are only 2 cinemas in the whole of Kharagpur, the better one obviously being inside the campus. As a result, many district people come and the fee is INR 100/- semester irrespective of how many movies you watch. This crazy deal attracts many.
- Fastest and unlimited DC++: This is a software that allows sharing of files over LAN. This amazing software makes it possible for you to download a file faster than copying it from someone. A variety of things can be downloaded like books, question papers, software, games, movies, TV Series, etc. There are no download limits too unlike some other IITs.
- Illumination: This is a unique phenomenon one can witness in IIT KGP during Diwali. Each of the 20 hostels participates in a competition wherein the students of that hostel have to portray a scene/message using Diyas. Rangoli was also made in this competition.
- Bond with seniors: IIT KGP has a harmonious ambiance and seniors are extremely friendly and approachable. There is this trend wherein seniors write to their juniors about how they feel, and any advice on scrapbooks, chart sheets, etc.
- Night routine: The students have crazy sleeping habits with some of them only sleeping for an hour or two at around 7 am only to wake up at 8:5O to rush to classes.
- Mess Food. The food, especially North Indian food is decent and not like that served in IIT MG or IITM. The quality of the food has seen a steady improvement with a 4 meal plan per day. The mess serves Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, and Dinner.
- Canteen: IIT KGP has 20 hostels (14 boys, 6 girls) and every hostel has its own canteen which runs from 3-4 AM every day. Some halls even serve their own specialty.
- College Fests: A number of cultural and technical fests are held at IIT KGP. Spring Fest is the Cultural Fest of IIT Kharagpur which is the biggest festival in eastern India whereas Kshitij is the Technical Fest of IIT Kharagpur, Asia’s Largest Technological-Management Fest.
- Eateries: Inside IIT KGP you can find Subway, CCD, Rooster, and Baskin Robbins offering food at affordable prices whereas outside you can find Dominos Pizza and a restaurant Flavors.
Life at IIT KGP is filled with fun and exciting activities.
One of my friends had the absolute delight to appear for the PGDBA interview conducted by a multifaceted panel. He shared his interview experience which might help you a bit.
Before the interview began, he was taken for a Verification Round wherein, every detail of academics scores or other profile-related information was cross-checked on the IIMs format. Once they received an IIM-verified document they were escorted to the interview venue.
The interview room had 3 panels; one from each institute obviously.
They asked for his brief introduction first. On hearing about his interest in Data Analytics, panelists probed him further with questions like
- What is Data Analytics
- Difference between analytics and analysis
- Contemporary Data analytics and ML
They further asked him why he chose Analytics. He told them that the increasing demand for the same in Europe and China made him realize how much India lacks in this aspect and thus he wanted to invest his efforts in Data Analytics.
Next, he was tested on his knowledge of Statistics and Mathematics with questions like
- Difference between mean, mode, Media
- Skewness
- Relationship of mean, mode, and median in a positive Skew graph
- Hypothesis Testing
- What is Anova
The next panelist took the reins and gave him a problem from SPC quality control. He asked him how do you know that his process in electric bulb making is as per customer Norma and is statistically controlled. My friend was able to answer most of the questions confidently and even solved this problem through charts.
Lastly, he was asked about his extracurricular activities and hobbies. The discussion ended with him asking about GST and the difference between GST and previous tax. Even though he gave a common answer, he managed to convert the interview.
ISI Kolkata is the best option for MSc in Maths, followed by IISc. IIT KGP is reputed in the technology domain, but for core science subjects, it’s not a good option. If you are interested to pursue pure Mathematics, choosing ISI is the best option among these. It specializes in the field. You will get better career opportunities and exposure in the field.
