Getting CSE in Thapar University with 72 in JEE Mains and 95% in CBSE will be difficult. For CSE, Thapar University cutoff stays around 96 percentile. If you want to join the institute, you should take a drop year and prepare for JEE Main again. The required cutoff changes year to year, depending on different factors. So, try to score above 130 in JEE Main, to be on the safe side.
M.E. or M.Tech students at Thapar University are eligible for AICTE approved stipend, provided they have valid GATE scores. For a course, Thapar University reserved 19 seats for GATE admission (General category). If you are in the top 19, you will receive a GATE stipend.
Students with valid GATE scores can also apply for additional scholarships. If you have a valid GATE score and you are receiving scholarships from AICTE or any other funding agency you can apply for an additional scholarship of INR 5,000 per month from TIET. If you have a valid GATE score and you are not getting funding from any agency, you will get a scholarship of INR 12,400 per month.
Students who aren’t GATE qualified, receive a scholarship of INR 10,000 per month for 10 months in an academic year.
One of my friends is a student at Thapar University, and here are some of the things that I heard from him. This is subjective and hence may vary from one person to another.
These are some of the things that you should keep in mind.
If you are a general category student you will need around 60% marks in 10+2 and 70+ marks in JEE Mains in order to get admission at Thapar University. If you have 80% in boards, you will need around 48+ percentile in JEE.
The video below briefly explains the cutoff for Thapar University
Thapar University cutoff usually stays lower than the NITs. The institute also has 50% reservation for Panjab domicile students. The cutoff required is lower for students from Panjab.
Thapar University placements are excellent for CSE. Here are the placement highlights for the branch.
Parameters | Statistics |
Highest CTC | INR 43 LPA |
Avergae CTC | INR 11 LPA |

DE Shaw, Apple, JP Morgan, Deloitte, Amazon, Google, etc. are among the major recruiters that took part in the placement drive.
ECE at Thapar University is more Hardware orientated. You may find yourself dealing with semiconductors for about 3 to 3.5 years. In addition to this, will be the onslaught of programming languages and a little portion of database and networking.
In case you opt for the Computer Science program, you'll notice that it is purely software-oriented and has a lot more on programming languages, architectures, databases,, and networking.
ECE is the 2nd best option after CSE as its cut-off is just below it. This year, cut off score for ECE is as listed below:
Particulars | General Category (Outside Punjab) | General Category (From Punjab) |
10th Marks (PCM) | 95.66% | 85% |
JEE Main 2021 | 65.05 percentile | 87.47 percentile |
As for placements, some well-known companies which visit for recruitment, are Texas Instruments, Whirlpool India, TCS, HP, Larsen and Toubro, ST Electronics, Philips, Mu Electronics India, and others. The placement rate is an amazing 99% for most of the departments. The highest package offered this year is 43 LPA and a total of 970 students got placed.
One of my friends is currently pursuing his Electronics and Computer Engineering at Thapar Institute of engineering technology, Patiala. Here are some snippets of his experience on campus so far.
Hope this gives you an idea of what to expect at Thapar University.
Thapar University offers admission based on the JEE Main cut-offs or merit basis. So, the quality of students is usually high.
The fee is a concern for students of Thapar as it has increased drastically to the level at par with BITS Pilani and others. But being a private institute, it does not get funding from the Government. So, the institute had no choice but to escalate its fee for up-gradation.
The raised fee and seats had justified reactions from the students. There is a slight quality drop in the education, but it is not extreme to tarnish the institute's image. Such decline in quality is ordinary in the top institutes as well. common
Overall, the institute has a decent bunch of students.
A few of my friends graduated from both these institutes mentioned above and here are some things they shared about them.
Though a lot of people have always discouraged the ones taking admission to the Derabassi campus. They feel the Patiala campus of Thapar University is far better.
You can study hard and change your stream by scoring good marks in your first year. And there is always an option for personal counseling.
Particulars | Derabassi | Patiala |
Total fees | 13.23 Lakhs | 13.23 Lakhs |
Placement percent | 90% | 80% |
Highest salary | INR 22 LPA | INR 25 LPA |
Average salary | INR 9 LPA | INR 6 LPA |
Lowest salary | INR 4 LPA | INR 3.5 LPA |
Top recruiting company | Microsoft, Amazon, Accenture, etc. | Apple, Microsoft, Google, JPMC, etc. |
You might get into CSE if your JEE mains score is above 75 in the last round. But even if you don’t, study hard in the Derabassi campus as it will not disappoint you no matter what others say or claim to know.
