XLRI Jamshedpur: Admission 2026, Fees, Courses, Cutoff, Ranking, Placement

Jamshedpur, Jharkhand
Private College

What's New at XLRI

XLRI final merit list was released on April 12, 2023. Results and acceptance letters will be shared through Emails.  Academic Sessions will begin in June 2023. XLRI concluded its placements for the batch 2021-23 and has achieved 100% placements. The highest International Package of INR 1.1 CPA was offered from the HR Domain. A total of 117 recruiters made 484 domestic offers.

The Steel City of Jamshedpur has been home to XLRI since 1949, when this private management institute first opened its doors. Recognition comes from AICTE, AIU, and GOI, while accreditation is held from AACSB, AMBA, and NBA. Its standing among Indian B-schools has stayed consistent: the Management category of NIRF 2023 placed it 9th, and QS World University Rankings 2024 slotted it within the 141 to 150 band. What draws candidates is the PGDM in Human Resource Management, together with an expansive alumni base, close industry relationships, and returns that justify the investment.

Proximity to Kolkata and Ranchi gives the campus reliable links to major cities nationwide. The distance to Jamshedpur Airport is 6 kilometers, and a railway station sits 10 km from the institute.

Every student in the 2024 batch was placed. Within PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM), the top offer touched INR 75 LPA against an average of INR 29.89 LPA; PGDM (GM) figures stood higher at the peak, with INR 80.35 LPA at the top and INR 29.4 LPA on average. Offers reached a cohort of 503 students through the participation of 154 recruiters.

The portfolio extends past PGDM specialisations into doctoral study, with entry routed through XAT, the institute's own entrance test. Candidates seeking a PGDM seat are assessed on XAT, GMAT, or GRE performance, then a personal interview, with a group discussion added in certain cases.

XLRI Highlights

  • A peak offer of INR 75 LPA closed the 2024 placement cycle; the highest stipend during the 2025 Summer Internship drive reached INR 3.5 Lakhs.

  • Many institutes across India accept XAT, an online examination, and not only XLRI.
  • Both XAT and the XLRI programmes can be applied to through one registration.
  • Registering for XAT costs INR 2,100 and the payment is made on the official site xlri.ac.in.
  • Applying to XLRI separately costs INR 2,200, with INR 200 charged for every extra programme selected.
  • Registration for GMAT applicants is priced at INR 2,500; NRI and foreign candidates pay INR 5,000.
  • Interview or group discussion performance, prior work experience, academic history, and extracurricular involvement all shape the final call alongside the entrance score.
  • xlri.ac.in, the institute's official website, is where results are declared.

XLRI Facilities and Hostel

Across its 50 acres, the campus provides an academic block, a library, computer resources, medical facilities, and sports amenities. Residential arrangements span five hostels for men and women that together hold over 400 single and twin-sharing rooms, supported by a mess, a canteen, a gym, a common recreation room, and open spaces.

Lectures typically start at 9 AM, lunch runs from 1 PM to 2 PM, and the hours after it usually go to case study analysis, group projects, assignments, and committee meetings. Committees active on campus include Academic, E-Cell, Samarthya, Infracom, Sapphire, Finax, Prometheus, Alumni, Sports, Toastmasters, Dracula, and Placement.

Holdings at the Sir Jehangir Ghandy Library run to 69,966 books and 28,670 eBooks, plus 17 newspapers, 90 print magazines and journals, 37,785 eMagazines and eJournals, 16,810 back volumes of print journals, 50 electronic resources and tools, and 14,200 dissertations and theses. Readers can also reach 1.46 million resources drawn from 350 international universities, along with a dedicated section for alumni and faculty publications, textbooks, Harvard Cases, and Coursera content. Daily opening hours total 21.5 including Sundays, the only break being 6 AM to 8.30 AM for housekeeping.

A grass football field, futsal, a pool table, tennis and basketball courts, and a beach volleyball court built to international standard make up the sporting infrastructure, with the SC Sarkar Gymnasium covering indoor badminton and workouts. Local sports affiliations further open up nearby swimming pools, squash courts, and a synthetic athletics track. Medical cover comes from a five bed campus infirmary staffed by three visiting doctors, backed by the multidisciplinary Tata Main Hospital located 3 km away.

Reasons to Join XLRI

Age has its advantages: being one of the country's earliest B-schools has given XLRI a vast alumni body, the XLers, who mentor students and put together networking events. Alumni frequently point to the culture as the institute's defining trait, helped along by a gender ratio that stays consistently balanced. Term-long study abroad is possible through exchange tie-ups with Loyola University Chicago, the Darden School of Business, and Aston Business School, arrangements that also bring international students to campus. Guest lectures, workshops, and industry projects put students in front of senior leaders and entrepreneurs, and that same network sustains a placement record in which 100% of students are placed at leading companies.

Ques. How much does applying for XAT cost?

Ans. The fee is INR 2,100.

Ques. Which factors decide PGDM selection?

Ans. A personal interview follows performance in XAT, GMAT, or GRE, and the final decision additionally accounts for academic background, work experience, and extracurricular activities.

Ques. Does a modest academic record rule a candidate out?

Ans. It does not, because the overall profile of an applicant matters rather than academic record or XAT percentile in isolation.

Ques. What is taught in the PGDM-HRM programme?

Ans. Over two years of full-time study it covers Human Resource Planning, Human Resource Information Systems, Selection, Performance Management, Training and Development, Compensation Administration, and the building of harmonious employer-employee relations within regulatory frameworks.

Ques. Do students get hostel rooms?

Ans. They do, in two building blocks, the old campus housing second-year students and the new campus first-years, with single occupancy rooms and basic amenities in each.

Ques. Does the course include internships?

Ans. It does. 604 internship offers came from top recruiters in 2024, the highest stipend being INR 3.5 Lakhs per month from the BFSI sector.

Ques. Where do the HR and BM programmes diverge?

Ans. Every management function is covered by BM, a relatively newer and continuously evolving programme comparable to a regular MBA. HRM, by contrast, is the oldest and most prestigious offering here and centres on Human Resource Planning, Human Resource Information Systems, Selection, and Performance Management, which suits candidates committed to an HR career.

Ques. Which scholarships are open to students?

Ans. Among the options are the Merit-cum-Need Kalyan Ganguly XEF Scholarship of INR 1,00,000, the Vasantha Sankaran Scholarship of INR 1,00,000 for BM-II students, and the INR 1,50,000 Alumni Scholarship for HRM-II and BM-II students.

Ques. Is Tata the owner of the institute?

Ans. No. Sponsorship comes from the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), making this a private business school and, having been founded in 1949, the oldest in India.

Ques. How would students describe life on campus?

Ans. Faculty quality is high, though securing a place in popular electives can be competitive, and case studies used in lectures are occasionally dated yet still useful. Several sports facilities feature in the infrastructure, and with senior and junior hostels placed at opposite ends of the campus, the two batches remain somewhat separate. The strongest draw continues to be placements: averages for the 2024 batch came to INR 29.89 LPA in PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM) and INR 29.4 LPA in PGDM (GM). On-campus events are organised frequently by student committees, the compact campus stays largely well-maintained and pleasant to walk through, and peers are talented. Since no particular lifestyle is imposed, students are free to chase extra credits via case competitions or simply relax with friends.

If you are planning on adding relevant work experience to your profile then taking another year to attempt CAT can be beneficial. If not, then this decision can hurt your case. CAT is also quite unpredictable, so you can’t be certain that you will get into IIM A next year.

Joining XLRI can be a good decision. It is one of the best B-schools in the county. There are people who may argue that IIM A offers better opportunities, which may even be true. However, XLRI is a different kind of brand with an enviable campus experience. As a part of XLRI, you will have access to their extensive alumni base across the industries, sectors, and institutes.

Add up these factors and weigh in your options before making any decision.

One of my friends is a student of XLRI and her interview experience was quite strange. When she looks back at the experience it seems quite funny. Here are a few snippets of her experience.

  • First, she was asked to explain the differences between Shakespearean Tragedy and Sophoclean Tragedy. This question is actually quite great for checking how deeply you can analyze dramatic narratives. But the fact that it was the very first question makes it funny.
  • There was a follow-up question to the previous one. The question was, ‘How do you relate Shakespearean tragedy to human resources?’ and she was asked to state it with appropriate examples.
  • One of the interviewers was from Civil Engineering and asked questions like, ‘What is the most reactive metal?’ (Ans- Sodium) and ‘What is the atomic number of Sodium?’ These questions were strange for my friend as she is a humanities student.

Based on many incidents that I heard from my friends over the year, it seems that most interviews of B-schools are of non-standardized nature. In most cases, the type of questions they ask depends on what presumptions they make about the candidate, and some depending upon their bias on a particular topic. However, it is a matter of discussion. Here is an interesting anecdote, I know a few people who have failed in XLRI PI round but have successfully cracked IIMs PI.

The brand value of ISB and XLRI, FMS, IIM L can’t be compared. ISB is known for its executive PGP while XLRI, FMS, and IIM L are reputed for their two-year-long MBA progran. These are some of the top-rated B-Schools in the country and have long-standing legacies.

ISB has a huge batch size of around 800. Due to the huge batch size students face problems getting decent opportunities through campus placements. The ROI isn’t that good. The total course fee for PGPM is around INR 36.3 lakhs. While the average CTC is around 34.07 LPA, according to the recent highlights of ISB placements.

It’s not true that XLRI doesn’t consider past academics for shortlisting students. They consider the academic records along with the other factors in your profile but the weightage assigned to academics is not as much as other reputed management institutes like IIMs.

Here is the weightage of different components for final selection at XLRI.

XLRI Selection Criteria Weightage 2022:

  • XAT score - 60%
  • GD/PI - 25%
  • Academic profile, essay, GK, work experience, video - 15%

As they assign only 15% for academic profile and other factors, if you perform well in XAT and GD-PI round, you will have a good chance of converting the interview call. Also, XAT doesn’t have any minimum required mark in graduation like CAT.

So, if you want to join XLRI, prepare well for XAT and work on your communication skills.

Due to the prevailing Covid-19 situation, XLRI took interviews online for 2021-23 batch. My brother had a zoom interview for XLRI BM. He completed Integrated M.Sc from IIT Kanpur and then pursued M.Phil and Ph.D. from Tilburg University.

The interview lasted for 40 mins. There were four interviewers.

  • After the introduction round they asked him about his Ph.D. and why he didn’t complete it.
  • They asked him whether he has any backup plan in case he wasn’t selected.
  • There were also questions on his hobbies, his career choices after MBA, his job interview experience.
  • They ended the interview with some questions on current affairs.

Overall, his XLRI Interview experience was smooth.

XLRI is the better option among these. The institute has a strong industry presence. According to the recent highlights, XLRI placements are pretty good. During the 2022 placement drive, the average CTC offered was INR 30.73 LPA. While the highest CTC offered was INR 60 LPA.

XLRI is widely reputed across the country. If you check the credentials of multinational brands operating in India, most of them are XLRI alumni.

Student life at XLRI is much better compared to IIM L. The personality development programs of XLRI are pretty good and help students gain management and leadership traits. IIM L has a more traditional approach toward academics.

There may be two possibilities here for your rejection- you were nervous during the interviews Or you came across as an aggressive/manipulative/inflexible kind of person to the interviewers.

With your profile, you should probably wait for one year to give a shot at IIM A, B, C, L, before going for XLRI. Prepare for the interview with a calm and good presence of mind.

Even though CAT is unpredictable, take your chances, if you aspire to join Consulting or Finance firms. If you aspire for a Marketing/ Operations/ General Management role, then there would be hardly any difference.

Waiting for a year is a good idea. Along with the reviews and data, consider preference to be known as an IIM A alum than an XL alum. How well you manage your emotional and logical reasons for pursuing MBA is what you need to think about.
