XLRI Admission: PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM)

Business Management at the institute is delivered through a pair of full-time diplomas that each run for two years: PGDM (BM) and PGDM (HRM). Graduates walk away with a Postgraduate Diploma in either Business Management or Human Resource Management, and the fee for either route totals INR 25,80,000. To apply, a candidate needs a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent of at least 3 years' duration, taken in any stream at a recognised university.

Selection Process

Shortlisting rests entirely on the XAT score. Those who clear that stage are then called for a Personal Interview, which the institute treats as the deciding round.

XLRI Admission Process: Executive PGDM

Running 15 months on a full-time residential basis, the Executive PGDM is the institute's flagship programme, with fees adding up to INR 21.70 Lakh.

Eligibility Criteria

Two conditions apply: a Bachelor's degree of 3 years or more, or an equivalent qualification, and no less than 5 years spent in a supervisory or managerial capacity.

Preparing for Executive PGDM Admission

  • Applicants sit the XAT, GRE, or GMAT entrance test.
  • Test results feed into a merit-based shortlist.
  • Those shortlisted attend in-person assessments that include a Personal Interview.
  • Entrance test scores and interview performance jointly decide the final list.

XLRI Admission Process: PGDM (IEV)

Carrying AICTE approval, the PGDM in Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Venture Creation is a full-time residential programme with total fees of INR 15,00,000.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree from a recognised university
  • Final-year graduation students may also apply
  • Prior experience in startups, business, or other relevant work is considered

Applications for this program can be submitted at: https://pgdmiev.xlri.ac.in/portal/login

Preparing for PGDM (IEV) Admission

  • Shortlisting draws on the Statement of Purpose along with academic record and work experience.
  • Shortlisted names are then called for a Personal Interview held in person.
  • The final list reflects both entrance test outcome and interview performance.
  • Candidates routing their application through XAT pay no extra fee.

XLRI Admission Process: PGDBM (Online), PGDF (Online), PGDHRM (Online)

Priced at INR 14 Lakhs each, PGDBM and PGDHRM are AICTE-approved online diplomas of two years' duration, and both include a one-week immersion on campus.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree with minimum 50% marks from a recognised university
  • Final-year graduation students are eligible
  • Relevant work experience is preferred

Selection Criteria

For PGDBM (Online) and PGDHRM (Online), profiles are screened first and the shortlisted applicants are then invited to XLRI for an interview. The route for PGDF (Online) works differently: applicants are ranked on a Profile Score that combines academic performance, fit with the program, relevant work experience, and diversity factors covering gender, academic background or geography. A Personal Interview follows for whoever makes that shortlist.

Scholarships for Online Courses

Access to the online programmes is broadened through fee waivers. Women applicants, ST/SC applicants and candidates from Tier II or Tier III locations form the three eligible categories, and any two of them may be claimed by a single candidate; finishing 10th, 12th and graduation alike in a Tier II/III town is another qualifying route. The top five academic performers additionally receive INR 50,000 each once the first year ends.

XLRI Admission Process: FPM

The Fellow Program in Management is a doctoral course of four years, offered full-time and residentially. Students drawing a stipend get INR 25,000 a month through the first two years and INR 30,000 a month in the third and fourth, though only those staying full-time and residential for the whole duration qualify for it. FPM and Executive FPM together open up nine specialization areas: Economics, Finance, General Management, Human Resource Management, Information Systems, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour, Production Operations and Decision Sciences, and Strategic Management. At the application stage, a primary area and a secondary area both have to be indicated.

Eligibility Criteria

  • 10+2 plus a BE/B.Tech or equivalent with minimum 60% marks (50% for SC/ST) and 2 years of work experience, or
  • 10+2 plus a 3-year Bachelor's degree or equivalent with minimum 60% marks (50% for SC/ST) along with a Master's degree with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST), or
  • An Integrated Master's degree with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST), or
  • A professional qualification such as CA, ICWA or CS with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST)

Preparing for FPM Admission

Three separate entry routes are open to applicants:

  1. Sitting the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT)
  2. Submitting a UGC JRF/NET, GRE or GATE score
  3. Holding a two-year full-time PGDM/MBA or equivalent from XLRI, any IIM, FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, XIM Bhubaneswar, IRMA, SP Jain, an IIT's school of management, TISS or ISI, carrying a CQPI of at least 6.00/8.00 or equivalent

Whichever route is taken, merit governs the shortlist, after which a Personal Interview settles the final selection.

Ques. Is the CAT score accepted for admission to the PGDM programmes?

Ans. It is not. XAT remains the route for Indian applicants, and GMAT is the alternative available to NRI and foreign candidates. Meeting the required score leads to a Personal Interview.

Ques. Which tests are considered when PGDM applications are screened?

Ans. XAT scores decide the matter for candidates from India; those applying as NRI or foreign nationals may send in either a XAT or a GMAT score. There are two stages to the process, an entrance-score shortlist first and an online interview after.

Ques. Is a separate application form needed after registering for XAT?

Ans. No separate form is needed, since XAT registration on its own makes a candidate eligible for the PGDM programme. The form carries a subject-preference section, and each additional programme selected costs INR 300 more.

Ques. How many years must an Executive MBA applicant have worked?

Ans. The bar is five years of full-time experience at managerial level. A Bachelor's degree and a valid XAT, GRE or GMAT score must accompany it.

Ques. How many one-year certifications run at the Jamshedpur campus, and which ones?

Ans. Six of them are on offer, namely PGCBM, PGCHRM, PGCBA, PGCF, PGCSL and PGCHCL.

Ques. Whom are the Postgraduate Certificate programmes meant for?

Ans. Working professionals pursuing a qualification alongside employment are the intended audience. The minimum requirement is a Bachelor's degree together with two years of work experience, and the institute conducts an interview to finalise selection.

Ques. Does the EFPM programme specify a work experience norm?

Ans. Yes, five years of full-time experience in an executive, managerial, teaching or research role is compulsory. Preference goes to applicants aged below 50 years.

Ques. Where did most PGDM offers come from, sector wise?

Ans. Consulting accounted for the biggest share at 29%. Sales and Marketing stood second with 16% and BFSI third with 14%, leaving 41% distributed among other sectors.

Ques. What did the PGDM batch earn during placements?

Ans. INR 60 LPA was the highest package recorded. The average settled at INR 30.07 LPA with a median of INR 30 LPA, while the programme itself cost INR 12.90 LPA.

Ques. Name some recruiters that visit the campus.

Ans. Past recruiters include The Boston Consulting Group, Accenture Strategy, Microsoft, Amazon, P&G, Aditya Birla Group, ITC, Avendus Capital, Standard Chartered, Capgemini ELITE and Hindustan Unilever. Newer additions to that list are Arga Investment Management, Myntra, Power Finance Corporation, Thoucentric Consulting, Welspun, Tolaram Group, M H Alshaya, JCB, TCS and Vedanta.

If you are planning on adding relevant work experience to your profile then taking another year to attempt CAT can be beneficial. If not, then this decision can hurt your case. CAT is also quite unpredictable, so you can’t be certain that you will get into IIM A next year.

Joining XLRI can be a good decision. It is one of the best B-schools in the county. There are people who may argue that IIM A offers better opportunities, which may even be true. However, XLRI is a different kind of brand with an enviable campus experience. As a part of XLRI, you will have access to their extensive alumni base across the industries, sectors, and institutes.

Add up these factors and weigh in your options before making any decision.

One of my friends is a student of XLRI and her interview experience was quite strange. When she looks back at the experience it seems quite funny. Here are a few snippets of her experience.

  • First, she was asked to explain the differences between Shakespearean Tragedy and Sophoclean Tragedy. This question is actually quite great for checking how deeply you can analyze dramatic narratives. But the fact that it was the very first question makes it funny.
  • There was a follow-up question to the previous one. The question was, ‘How do you relate Shakespearean tragedy to human resources?’ and she was asked to state it with appropriate examples.
  • One of the interviewers was from Civil Engineering and asked questions like, ‘What is the most reactive metal?’ (Ans- Sodium) and ‘What is the atomic number of Sodium?’ These questions were strange for my friend as she is a humanities student.

Based on many incidents that I heard from my friends over the year, it seems that most interviews of B-schools are of non-standardized nature. In most cases, the type of questions they ask depends on what presumptions they make about the candidate, and some depending upon their bias on a particular topic. However, it is a matter of discussion. Here is an interesting anecdote, I know a few people who have failed in XLRI PI round but have successfully cracked IIMs PI.

The brand value of ISB and XLRI, FMS, IIM L can’t be compared. ISB is known for its executive PGP while XLRI, FMS, and IIM L are reputed for their two-year-long MBA progran. These are some of the top-rated B-Schools in the country and have long-standing legacies.

ISB has a huge batch size of around 800. Due to the huge batch size students face problems getting decent opportunities through campus placements. The ROI isn’t that good. The total course fee for PGPM is around INR 36.3 lakhs. While the average CTC is around 34.07 LPA, according to the recent highlights of ISB placements.

It’s not true that XLRI doesn’t consider past academics for shortlisting students. They consider the academic records along with the other factors in your profile but the weightage assigned to academics is not as much as other reputed management institutes like IIMs.

Here is the weightage of different components for final selection at XLRI.

XLRI Selection Criteria Weightage 2022:

  • XAT score - 60%
  • GD/PI - 25%
  • Academic profile, essay, GK, work experience, video - 15%

As they assign only 15% for academic profile and other factors, if you perform well in XAT and GD-PI round, you will have a good chance of converting the interview call. Also, XAT doesn’t have any minimum required mark in graduation like CAT.

So, if you want to join XLRI, prepare well for XAT and work on your communication skills.

Due to the prevailing Covid-19 situation, XLRI took interviews online for 2021-23 batch. My brother had a zoom interview for XLRI BM. He completed Integrated M.Sc from IIT Kanpur and then pursued M.Phil and Ph.D. from Tilburg University.

The interview lasted for 40 mins. There were four interviewers.

  • After the introduction round they asked him about his Ph.D. and why he didn’t complete it.
  • They asked him whether he has any backup plan in case he wasn’t selected.
  • There were also questions on his hobbies, his career choices after MBA, his job interview experience.
  • They ended the interview with some questions on current affairs.

Overall, his XLRI Interview experience was smooth.

XLRI is the better option among these. The institute has a strong industry presence. According to the recent highlights, XLRI placements are pretty good. During the 2022 placement drive, the average CTC offered was INR 30.73 LPA. While the highest CTC offered was INR 60 LPA.

XLRI is widely reputed across the country. If you check the credentials of multinational brands operating in India, most of them are XLRI alumni.

Student life at XLRI is much better compared to IIM L. The personality development programs of XLRI are pretty good and help students gain management and leadership traits. IIM L has a more traditional approach toward academics.

There may be two possibilities here for your rejection- you were nervous during the interviews Or you came across as an aggressive/manipulative/inflexible kind of person to the interviewers.

With your profile, you should probably wait for one year to give a shot at IIM A, B, C, L, before going for XLRI. Prepare for the interview with a calm and good presence of mind.

Even though CAT is unpredictable, take your chances, if you aspire to join Consulting or Finance firms. If you aspire for a Marketing/ Operations/ General Management role, then there would be hardly any difference.

Waiting for a year is a good idea. Along with the reviews and data, consider preference to be known as an IIM A alum than an XL alum. How well you manage your emotional and logical reasons for pursuing MBA is what you need to think about.
