The Duration of the Test is 3 Hours. The Test will have a total of 50 Questions carrying 150 Marks. Each Question will be a Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) and will have only 1 Correct Answer:
Section Name | Number of Questions | Total Marks |
---|---|---|
Verbal Ability | 15 | 45 |
Data Interpretation and Data Visualization | 5 | 15 |
Logical Reasoning | 5 | 15 |
Quantitative Ability | 25 | 75 |
Total | 50 | 150 |
The marking scheme remained the same as last year with a reward of 3 marks for each correct attempt and a penalty of 1 mark for each incorrect answer. Overall the PGDBA Paper could be labeled as medium difficulty and a score of around 105-110 should be sufficient to get a call. The section-wise analysis of the PGDBA Exam is given below:
The Verbal Ability section of the PGDBA Paper basically consists of 3 types of questions:
The Reading Comprehension subsection consisted of 2 short passages. One of the passages - on “In-house Workforce” - was quite difficult since the questions asked were primarily inference based. In contrast to this, the second passage on “Social and Economic Issues in Latin American countries” was quite straightforward with direct questions.
There were 3 Parajumbles asked in the paper out of which 2 were very doable. The third parajumbles was more challenging and may lead to incorrect attempts. The grammar questions were slightly tricky due to the vocabulary used but were still doable. A good attempt would require at least 10-12 Questions to be answered correctly.
Data Interpretation and Data Visualization
IIM Calcutta PGDBA exam tested candidates with 5 separate questions with 1 graph/chart each instead of 1 set with 5 questions. This would make the section slightly more time consuming but also meant that you would not have to give up on the section if you were unable to solve the set. The questions in the section were fairly straightforward and not calculation-intensive. All 5 questions were solvable within 10-15 minutes.
Logical Reasoning
Logical Reasoning was different from the Data Interpretation section in the sense that it constituted 1 set with 5 Questions instead of 5 stand-alone questions. The set was slightly tricky but still doable. The students are required to solve the set (5 Questions) in 10-15 minutes.
Quantitative Aptitude
The Quantitative Aptitude section is the section with the highest weightage in the PGDBA Exam with 25 questions. Almost all the topics in the PGDBA Exam Syllabus were tested in the exam with the highest concentration being in Algebra and Higher Mathematics. The section could be termed as moderate-difficulty in terms of level of difficulty. The ideal strategy to maximize your marks would be to attempt questions apart from Higher Maths first and then attempt as many of the Higher Maths questions. This should allow a good student to attempt 17-18 questions

For GEM, the CAT percentiles required to get an interview call from IIM Blackis, FMS, SP Jain, JBIMS, and MDI Gurgaon are
It’s important to know that these figures are based on trends and not on actual data so you will find exceptions everywhere. Moreover, it’s better you don’t waste time analyzing the CAT cutoff and start preparing for the same.
If you have a good 10th and 12th-grade point average but a gradual decrease in graduation, it will undoubtedly affect your admission if you do not have work experience.
Attempt to improve your CAT percentile. Having a round 99.86+ percentile, you may receive a call from both the new and old IIMs.
No, choosing FMS Delhi over IIMB or IIMC is definitely not a good decision as you will be missing out on so many opportunities. Some of them include
You won’t lose anything from joining IIMS over FMS.
These colleges don’t reveal the separate weightage break-up for work experience, test scores, and other such factors. For the final shortlist, institutes such as IIT KGP, IIM C, and ISI Kolkata take these factors into consideration along with your performance in the interview. These institutes assign a good volume of weightage to the entrance examination score. So, try to improve your test score as much as possible.
Your selection should be based on your profile, such as your work experience, industry, and, most importantly, what you hope to gain from the program. If you have 4-5 years of work experience, you can look at EPGP because they have gone through ISB and have capped the work experience of the candidates they accept.
The age range for IIMA is 5-20 years, so the learning will be unparalleled in terms of class discussions and peer group learning. If I recall correctly, IIM Calcutta has a lower batch strength, and the batch is slightly on the higher side of work experience.
Placements are good at all institutes, and your previous industry experience is important. This is something you cannot change and should accept, but you can look at how candidates in that sector have performed over time.
In terms of learning, you'll not find the variety you'll find at PGPX anywhere else. Make contact with both alumni and current students. Make an informed decision based on your motivation for enrolling in the program.
There is no concession for SC/ST students in IIM A, B and C. But this is not a major issue.
IIMs offer a lot of financial aid services to financially weak people. In some cases, the entire fee is paid by the college or some part. It depends on the judgment of the panel on the basis of your situation.
All IIMs offer educational loans at a relatively low interest rate. Banks usually consider IIM students as a profitable investment. So rather than worrying about the money, focus more on your goals.
Both IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta are excellent B Schools that give an edge to each other in almost every aspect. If ever you see someone choosing one over the other then it’s only because of his/her personal preference because they both are not lacking in any terms.
Yet if I had to name a few USPs of IIM Bangalore that make it a more coveted IIM than Calcutta, here are a few

Yes, it is possible to reschedule an interview at IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta or any other IIM. If you can’t attend the interview, for some reason, you can write a mail and request them to give you another interview slot. You should explain the reason and attach proof with the mail. For example, if your semester examination dates are clashing with the interview date, you should attach the examination schedule with the mail.
For valid reasons, they agree to reschedule.
One of my friends had the absolute delight to appear for the PGDBA interview conducted by a multifaceted panel. He shared his interview experience which might help you a bit.
Before the interview began, he was taken for a Verification Round wherein, every detail of academics scores or other profile-related information was cross-checked on the IIMs format. Once they received an IIM-verified document they were escorted to the interview venue.
The interview room had 3 panels; one from each institute obviously.
They asked for his brief introduction first. On hearing about his interest in Data Analytics, panelists probed him further with questions like
They further asked him why he chose Analytics. He told them that the increasing demand for the same in Europe and China made him realize how much India lacks in this aspect and thus he wanted to invest his efforts in Data Analytics.
Next, he was tested on his knowledge of Statistics and Mathematics with questions like
The next panelist took the reins and gave him a problem from SPC quality control. He asked him how do you know that his process in electric bulb making is as per customer Norma and is statistically controlled. My friend was able to answer most of the questions confidently and even solved this problem through charts.
Lastly, he was asked about his extracurricular activities and hobbies. The discussion ended with him asking about GST and the difference between GST and previous tax. Even though he gave a common answer, he managed to convert the interview.
Both IIM Calcutta and IIM Kozhikode are top-notch management institutes in India. The majority of people claim that IIMC is better than IIMK just because it has a strong alumni connection and extremely experienced faculty.
But don’t make your decision solely based on this. Keep your aim in mind before deciding.
Choose IIM Calcutta if-
You want your personality to be developed to the maximum extent
You have a knack for Maths and Analytical Skills Development
Choose IIM Kozhikode if-
You want to be in the top 1% of the class
You prefer an institute with less dynamism
If you are average at Maths and Analytical Skills Development
The final decision is yours to make.
