NIT Silchar PhD Application process for Monsoon session is over now. The shortlist has been released and the written and PI will be conducted from June 05 to June 07, 2023. Check NIT Shilchar PhD Shortlist

NIT Silchar PhD is a 2 year full-time doctoral program offered in 12 major specializations. Admission to the program is based on merits in the qualifying degree and GATE exam scores. The institute has withdrawn written test for PhD admissions. Candidates shortlisted in the screening test are called for counselling and document verification. List of selected candidates is then sent Dean’s office on recommendation of Department. There are total 12 departments at NIT Silchar offering PhD program:

Group A- Regular Category who may receive fellowship from the MHRD / CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.
Group B- No financial assistance or stipend by NIT Silchar will be provided for this GROUP.

NIT Silchar PhD Eligibility Criteria

For Engineering:

M.E./M.Tech. or equivalent in an appropriate area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 (on a 10 point scale) or equivalent (60% of marks). For SC/ST candidates, a minimum CPI of 6.0 (on a 10 point scale) or equivalent (55% of marks).
B.E./B.Tech. with an excellent academic record and with a CPI of at least 8.0 (on 10 point scale) or equivalent (75% of marks). For graduates from IITs/NITs, the minimum CPI requirement is 7.0 (on a 10 point scale). For SC/ST candidates, there is a relaxation of 0.5 CPI or 5% of marks.

For Science and Management Studies:

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in the relevant discipline with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or equivalent (60% marks).

For Humanities and Social Sciences:

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in any field with a minimum CPI of 6.0 or equivalent (55% marks).

NIT Silchar PhD Admission 2023

NIT Silchar PhD admission is based on merits in the qualifying degree and GATE exam scores. Candidates satisfying all the eligibility criteria are called for the counselling process and document verification. The institute also gives admission without GATE score to candidates applying for Part-time PhD, Institute’s employees, Sponsored scholars.

To apply for the NIT Silchar PhD program, visit the online application portal of the institute, i.e., http://admission.nits.ac.in/phdadmission2023. Candidates applying for the program are required to pay an application fee of INR 500 (Open/OBC/EWS) and INR 250 (SC/ST/PwD).

NIT Silchar charges a tuition fee of INR 7,500 fo its PhD program. SC/ST category of students is waived off from paying tuition fee. In addition to this, the institute also charges Institute fees, semester fee, and refundable fee from PhD scholars. NIT Silchar PhD Scholarships

The institute NIT Silchar offers several scholarships to the students. The Scholarships are offered under government bodies, charitable trusts as well as DBT systems. Following are the scholarship schemes under Govt. Bodies:

NIT Silchar PhD Stipend

NIT Silchar PhD stipend is given to scholars who are selected through UGC NET and GATE. The institute provides INR 31,000 of stipend per month to Junior Research Fellow (JRF) scholars. Senior Research Fellow (SRF) are given INR 35,000 of stipend per month. NIT Silchar also provides PhD stipend to Research Associates. Scholars belonging to Research Associate - 1 get INR 47,000 per month. Research Associate Category -2 scholars get INR 49,000 per month and category-3 scholars get stipend of INR 54,000.

Ques. What is the minimum duration of a PhD program for Part time students at NIT Silchar?

Ans. For Part time students with Post Graduate degree, the minimum duration is six semesters while for Part time students with Bachelor degrees, the minimum duration is eight semesters. The maximum duration including all granted leaves shall be 7 years.

Ques. What is the minimum duration of a Ph.D. program for Full time students?

Ques. Can a student convert from part-time to regular PhD and vice versa at NIT Silchar?

Ans. Yes, a candidate can convert from part-time to regular and vice-versa depending on the genuineness of the situation.

Ques. What financial support options are available for the NIT Silchar PhD students?

Ans. Full scholarship / assistantship is available for the full time students of engineering departments with M.E./M.Tech. and students of other departments/students of engineering departments with B.E./B.Tech with valid NET/ GATE score. Upto a maximum of 24 students in an academic year and subject to availability of funds, INR 10,000/- PM is also admissible for students in science/humanities and social sciences departments without valid NET/ GATE score.

Ques. Can anyone take admission into the PhD program at NIT Silchar without having a GATE score?

Ans. Yes, the institute also admits the eligible students without a GATE score on the basis of their previous academic records, their eligibility, performance in the written test and interview conducted by the institute. Candidates can also appear for the NET exam and can take admission with a valid NET score.

One of my close friends graduated from the CSE department of NIT Agartala. I have friends from NIT Silchar and NIT Mizoram as well. Based on what I heard from them, I will say that NIT Silchar is a better option. The reasons why NIT Silchar is better than the other two institutes are as follows. NIT Silchar is ranked better than NIT Agartala and NIT Mizoram by NIRF. NIT Silchar has a better placement record. Students mostly prefer NIT Silchar over NIT Agartala and NIT Mizoram. So, it has a better opening and closing JEE/AIEEE ranks. The difference between NIT Silchar and NIT Agartala is minimal. Both of these two are tier 2, old NITs and have similar pros and cons. NIT Silchar is marginally better than Agartala. However, the latter is catching up quite quickly. NIT Agartala has the only supercomputer in the North East. ISRO has opened an incubation center in NIT Agartala, which is the first in India. Even, few companies choose to conduct joint placement drives for NIT Agartala and NIT Silchar. So, there is not much difference between NIT Silchar and NIT Agartala. If you are getting your preferred branch at NIT Agartala, don’t choose NIT Silchar over it. As for NIT Mizoram, it is a fairly new institute and needs time to catch up with the other two institutes.

My brother is from NIT Silchar and this is the best thing that ever happened to him. But also every institute has its own advantages and disadvantages. Pros: Weather: Pristine green and calm climate, No pollution, Beautiful lakes, and amazing tea gardens. Professors: The teachers here are extremely friendly. They will advise you on your future choices and point you in the right direction. Other Activities: Apart from your academics, you have the freedom to explore your hobbies or create new ones, develop other skills, go on a tour to nearby amazing places like Mizoram, Shillong, Sikkim, Twang, and so on. Internet: The best thing among all facilities is unlimited internet access. Many colleges have high-speed internet, but they do not provide unlimited access without a time limit. Beyond any doubt, IIEST Shibpur and NIT Silchar are good colleges but when it comes to the ranking IIEST Shibpur stands at 17th NIRF ranking while NIT Silchar at 53rd rank. It is better than NIT Silchar in terms of education, faculty, placements, and infrastructure. The college has a very welcoming atmosphere and beautiful infrastructure situated near the banks of river Ganga. The academics at the college are really worth it. All the faculty members and all the students are studious. You will get hands-on experience through various mini-projects assigned at the end of the first year and the knowledge gained on the various advanced topics is very helpful in the third year. The campus of IIEST Shibpur is a completely ragging-free zone where no student is harassed and if any such case is found strict actions are taken immediately. The hostel life is really worth remembering for all the students. For the entire four years, you develop bonds with people from different regions, cultures, and financial backgrounds. Here are a few of the reasons why NIT Silchar is a better alternative. IIIT Kota and IIIT Kalyani are pretty new and hence these are generally not the first choice. NIT Silchar provides some extraordinary facilities like a supercomputing center and exchange programs with the University of Illinois.
