NIT Rourkela offers the Ph.D. program across 23 specializations. The Ph.D. program offered by the institute is completely full time on campus. The duration of Ph.D. program is minimum 3 years and maximum 5 years. The institute charges yearly fee of INR 51500 for its PhD program. NIT Rourkela PhD Eligibility Criteria

M.E/ M.Tech/ M.Pharm in relevant discipline with at least 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks in aggregate in both B.Tech (or M.Sc./ M.Pharm/ MCA) and M.Tech levels from recognized technical Institute or University.
B.E/ B.Tech/ B.Pharm/ MCA or equivalent in relevant discipline with 7.0 CGPA or 65% marks in aggregate.
M.Sc in Basic Sciences with 7.0 CGPA or 65% marks in aggregate in relevant disciplines.
M.B.B.S with CGPA 6.5 or 60% marks in aggregate.
M.Sc./ M.A/ MBA/ M.Com. in Humanities and Social Sciences or Management with CGPA 6.5 or 60% marks.

Note: Candidates having valid NET/ GATE score along with these criteria will get more preference.

NIT Rourkela PhD Admission

Selection to the Ph.D. program at NIT Rourkela is done on the basis of academic record, relevance of qualification, candidate's research interest, existing research program and performance of the candidate in the written test and personal interview conducted by the institute itself.

Candidates have to appear in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) entrance test conducted by Premier IITs. NET Qualified candidates will also be exempted from other entrances.

How to Apply?

The application form for admission in PhD courses offered by NIT Rourkela can be filled online by visiting https://www.nitrkl.ac.in/. Below are the steps to apply for PhD course:

Visit the official website and read the admission details carefully.
The candidate has to register Themselves on the scheduled dates of registration which will be conducted online.
The registration form is supposed to be filled and submitted to the DPGC convener.
The screening committee verifies the eligibility of the candidate and if he/she is eligible, the candidates need to appear for the Entrance exam, followed by an Interview after clearing the entrance exam.

Each specialization will have a different syllabus for each of the semester/year.
There will be compulsory course work (Elective subjects chosen by the candidate itself in their discipline) that carries around 3 to 4 credits.

NIT Rourkela PhD Stipend

NIT Rourkela provides Stipend/fellowship to all the PhD scholars enrolled with the institute. Candidates clearing the Progress Seminar (as conducted by the department) become eligible for the fellowship. Prevailing rate of fellowship is given in the following table:

Ques. Which one is better, NIT Allahabad or NIT Rourkela for PhD?

Ans. NIT Rourkela is the 2nd best institute according to MHRD. On the other hand, NIT Allahabad has a fine alumni network with superb placement packages. So, choose PhD admission in any of the two institutions based on your own requirements.

Ques. Under which condition a PhD student will get scholarship/fellowship at NIT Rourkela?

Ans. A PhD student having M.Tech/M.Pharm degree and within the age limit are eligible for Institute research fellowship for four years; first two years INR 31000 a month and next two years on satisfactory performance at INR 35000 a month.

The maximum age limit is 32 years (35 years for SC/ST/Women candidates) to be eligible for fellowship.

Ques. What is the scholarship/fellowship offered by NIT Rourkela to a PhD student?

The average CTC for the branch is around INR 17 LPA.

NIT Trichy is among the top 10 in NIRF Ranking while NIT Rourkela is still behind in the list. The infrastructure of both the colleges is decent. The alumni collaboration is widespread for both institutes. However, NIT Trichy has a well-experienced faculty. In terms of management of various societies, clubs in the campus, extra co-curricular, and cleanliness are all exceptionally approved of by the students. If anything, it is top-notch at NIT Trichy. NIT Rourkela cannot be compared with NIT Trichy when it comes to placements. The opportunities provided in NITT are tremendous and are far ahead of NIT Rourkela. It is suggested to not go for NIT Rourkela unless you are opting for a core branch. NIT Trichy should be your priority in any situation.

I have a friend from NIT Calicut and he was able to provide some information regarding their M.Tech in Offshore Structure. Offshore structures are currently one of the most promising fields in the future along with transportation engineering. It requires thorough knowledge in subjects such as FEM, Mathematics, and mechanics to be a successful offshore engineer. Additionally, the offshore industry pays more than a normal Structural consultancy as the structures are highly compounded. A beginner Structural engineer may not get very good pay as they are in large numbers and currently supply is more than demand. As for NIT Calicut, it boasts of an outstanding Civil Department. However, the placement offered by the institute may not be that good. But you can manage to get jobs through off-campus placements. You can earn a lot in the field as you gain experience.

One of my friends studied at NIT Rourkela. According to him, the campus was really good and had many features that made it stand out among others. Here are some facts about it: They have a huge campus, the second largest in the country. The environment is clean and green, with all the necessary facilities found nearby the campus area. The food here is comparatively costly than any other college at its level. It will take a bit of time to ease up on the food if you are an outstation student. The academic pressure is not much. They only strictly monitor attendance. The students are required to maintain a 75% attendance to be able to sit for the exams. The faculty is average, they prefer students mug up theories than actually learn the content. Labs are tough and have regular evaluation. Here you will get a lot of exposure to extra curricular activities. Many clubs are present like dance, drama, music, photography, social service, varieties of coding, robotics, aerospace club, vehicle designing club and many more. These clubs teach you time management and enhance your skills. The main rourkela city is about 7 kms from the railway station which has constant auto services. Rourkela has many restaurants, pubs and other hangout zones. They also have Vaishnodevi temple which students visit as the trip includes trekking and great viewpoints.

He stated that between these three, Rourkela and Bhopal are more or less equal. However, both of these institutes consist of some advantages and disadvantages as well. If NIT Bhopal is considered and compared with NIT Rourkela, then it must be said that NIT Bhopal's strength is a large batch size; IT+CSE. But the main advantage of NIT Bhopal is the location and nearby airport transport facilities that conceal all the advantages of this institute. For this reason, NIT Bhopal experiences big recruiters every year, and NIT Rourkela misses this entirely. This is the reason why NIT Bhopal is one step ahead of NIT Rourkela. One of my friends is a CSE student at NIT Rourkela. According to him the department is very decent. The classes were held regularly, sometimes having 5 tests a day including viva sessions. The faculty is highly experienced and cooperative. The campus is really beautiful, and one of the best in the country. The student crowd is diverse. They are also very competitive, which actually makes the educational environment engaging and better. Placements here are a bit mediocre overall, but the CSE department has always shown promising results. BITS Goa would be the better option here only if there’s no financial problem. NIT Rourkela is also one of the best NITs, but when it comes to CSE department BITS will take the lead here. BITS Pilani or the Goa campus would be more preferable over NIT Rourkela.
