Band 7 IELTS Answer

The given bar chart shows the changes of five age groups of Iceland over a period of 30 years. The time frame ranges from 1990 to 2020. There are five age groups starting from 0 to 65 and over.

At the first glance, we can see that the percentage of people aged 25 to 54 years old is higher than any other age group. This is not only in 1990 but also in 2020. We also see that this graph had an upward trend in the given period. We can also see that on the other hand, the number of young Icelanders under 24 tended to decrease over the years.

If we see year wise, in 1990, there were over 30% of people aged 25 to 54 in Iceland. This population percentage increased over the next 20 years and reached its peak in 2020. It consisted of nearly half the population of Iceland. The young under 24 years old were just the opposite. This age group saw a downward trend over time. From 21% and 25% in 1990, the number of young people in the 15 to 24 age group and under 14 age group fell to approximately 9% and 19% respectively.

The number of elderly people in Iceland witnessed a very minimal fluctuation over the years. People aged 55 to 64 years accounted for nearly 13% in 1990 and slightly decreased to 12% in 2000 and 2010, and finally reached one-tenth in 2020. In the years 1990 and 2000, the percentage of elderly people over 65 years old remained stable at 12%. This number went up minimally in 2010 and then fell down in the last year with the figure of 13%. Hence, we can say that the young population increased in Iceland over the years.

Band 6.5 IELTS Answer

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of different age group populations over the years. The graph starts in 1990 and ends in 2020. One of the prominent factors is that the ages 25-54 showed a notable upward trend and dominated the group over the span of 30 years.

In 1990, approximately one third of the population aged from 25-54.The percentage of population aged under 14 was similar to adults in its percentage, at roughly one quarter. The year 2010 saw the population of adults rise to twice higher than the ages 0-14. They stood at almost 40% and just over 20 % respectively. Nearly a half of the population was aged from 25-54 in 2020, which was higher than teenagers and children which stood at around 30%. Young adults (aged 15-24) was the third highest number group in 1990, at around 22%. After that, however, it decreased consistently and became the lowest number of aged groups, at just under one in ten. The least of the group were the elders who were aged 65 and over and aged 55-54. Both these groups showed trends in the percentage of population. In 1990 and 2000, both these two groups had a similar number which was around 10% of the population. However, in 2010, the oldest group reached around 15% while the other group remained just above 10%.
