For a growing economy, wider exposure, Germany is one of the popular international destinations among the students worldwide. During the admission, the qualifying score in IELTS is mandatory to proficiency in the English language along with holding an excellent academic record.

But unlike UK or US universities, German universities accept IELTS band 6 (7.0 or above) often for various undergraduate programs. Plus there are a few German universities that accept an average IELTS score varying from 4.5 and 6.5

German Universities and their IELTS Band Requirements

  1. Ulm University

IELTS Band Score– 6.5 or above

Ulm University is a public university ranking at the 141st position globally in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020. Along with 1,400 international students, the total number of students is above 10,500. The university offers 34 bachelor’s and 41 master’s programs, and the minimum IELTS score needed here is 6.5.

  1. University of Cologne

IELTS Band Score– 6.0 or above

The University of Cologne (UoC) offers 335 academic programs and the international students planning to pursue a course here need to have at least 6.0 or above IELTS score.

  1. Technical University of Munich

IELTS Band Score– 6.5

Among 40,000 students, 30% are international at the Technical University of Munich and in the QS World University Rankings 2020 it holds 55th position. The university offers more than 168 academic programs and at least an IELTS score of 6.5 is needed for enrollment.

  1. Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich

IELTS Band Requirement – 5.5

The Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich is a public research university with above 50,000 students (including 9,000 international). This university rank 32nd among globally top universities. Several master’s and doctoral programs are taught entirely in English but the number of bachelor’s programs taught entirely in English is low here. 

Required IELTS band is 5.5 at this German university, but sufficient knowledge of German language is also needed.

IELTS Band Requirement – 6.5

Heidelberg University offers more than 180 programs and to get admission to these programs, the minimum IELTS score required is 6.5.

  1. Humboldt University of Berlin

IELTS Band Requirement – 6.5

With almost 32,500 students including 5,200 international students, Humboldt University of Berlin is at 4th position nationally in the latest university rankings by both QS and Times Higher Education. To get admission in any of the 189 academic programs offered here, a minimum IELTS band of 6.5 is needed.

IELTS Band Score– 4.5

The Free University of Berlin (FU Berlin) has more than 33,000 students enrolled for different undergraduate and graduate courses, in addition to 4,000 doctoral students. The university holds 130th position in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2020. 

At FU Berlin, more than 178 bachelor’s and master’s programs are delivered through 11 academic departments and 21 programs among that are taught entirely in English 

This required IELTS score for MS programs and other courses is 4.5 or above for international students but knowledge of german is also needed.

IELTS Band Score– 6.5

The University of Göttingen is a public research university having more than 31,000 students are enrolled at the university. The students need an IELTS score of 6.5 or above for admission in its English-language programs.

  1. RWTH Aachen University

IELTS Band Score– 6.5 or above

RWTH Aachen University is offering quality education to more than 45,000 students out of which 10,500 are international. The minimum IELTS score needed to study here is 6.5.

IELTS Band Requirement – 5.5 or above

The University of Bonn is presently home to more than 38,000 students. This public research university offers more than 200 academic programs for which the minimum IELTS score needed is 5.5.

IELTS Requirement for Germany Student Visa

Students pursuing higher studies in Germany need to submit IELTS scores for student Visas too. However, the requirement of the IELTS score is a bit different here, IELTS score between 5.5 to 7.5 is accepted for Visa purpose.
