Topic: People from poor and rural backgrounds find it difficult to get a university education. Some people think that government should make it easier for them to enter universities. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.

Band 7.5 IELTS Essay

Nowadays to attain an education from a college, a student needs to meet the requirement of the entrance and should be able to pay the fees. The university applicants need to maintain these conditions to get a chance to take these degree courses. This results in arising difficulties for the underprivileged students in achieving higher education. I agree with the fact that the government should introduce certain arrangements to support such students without putting others at a disadvantage.

I believe that the government and colleges should raise more discounts and scholarships for undergraduate students whose families' income is below average. This is because the average income is lower in rural areas rather than the income in urban ones. Rural people suffer a lot in paying fees of tuition since it is the same amount for everybody. Therefore, it is important for the government or any academic institution to look into the matter. It should be their duty to help the rural students who are deprived of these higher studies due to lack of money. The educational institution and government need to provide financial support such as discounting tuition fees and studying promotion funds to rural students.

On the other hand, I firmly believe that universities should not reduce entrance requirement scores in regards to maintaining a fair standard. This indicates that students from remote regions and from underprivileged backgrounds generally have a little rate of success. This is because they often get lower grades at school. Therefore, rural students have witnessed an environment that is less interesting. It makes them forfeit momentum for attaining proper education and bright careers with relevant skills. Therefore, if the university offered them places, it would be anti-meritocratic, since it would deny access to other students with amazing academic performance. The other students would not be able to attain higher studies for which they worked hard at school. Thus, reducing the scores of entrance requirements in the universities is not a good idea since it would demotivate other students. Moreover, it is not an effective decision for the growth of society.

Summing up, I agree that the government and universities must introduce certain policies of discounts or scholarships for students of below-average-income families. I moreover believe that entry requirements must be identical for every student irrespective of their background. The university should give a chance to the smartest and most eligible student rather than the incompetent student.

Band 8 IELTS Essay

As we all know, education plays an important role in developing the success of a man. There are many people whose goal is to achieve a university degree. Nowadays, higher education is not a choice for students in rural families. It has become a mandatory option for every student. Some people thus argue that the requirements for university entrance should be low to give a chance to underprivileged students. It will enable them to acquire a level of justice and fairness in society. I partly agree with this statement.

There are certain reasons behind establishing the entrance requirements lower for underprivileged applicants. Firstly, students in rural areas do not get access to obtain a high-quality education. They are of deprived classes and do not get the pleasure of studying in a good institution like their peers in the cities. Hence, lowering the level of entrance will enable them to get a chance to attain higher studies. It will further promote equality between students of different backgrounds. It will help applicants from rural backgrounds to achieve a quality and higher education at reputed universities.

Furthermore, I also believe that it is significant for the universities not to establish a score bar of entrance too low. The main intent of the university is to provide education to the students and develop their careers. The universities aim to offer highly efficient students. The university should judge the academic level of the disadvantaged candidates. It is required to verify their academic level to meet the eligibility criteria. Otherwise, it would become difficult for the underprivileged students to compete with their friends. I believe that the government should introduce certain policies to upgrade the rural educational system, such as recruiting more teachers or constructing more schools. These policies will improve the educational quality in underprivileged areas and will also help to develop a competitive workforce for the countries.

Summing up, I believe that funding in prompting educational facilities or recruiting more high-qualified teachers would improve the rural education system. This will enable the deprived class to achieve quality education so that they could easily get a chance in the university. Thus, setting a lower entry bar for the university entrance is insignificant rather than introducing certain policies that would promote better results.

Band 8.5 IELTS Essay

It is often believed that students with weak financial backing or students from very secluded areas find it quite difficult to continue their higher studies. Therefore it is often advisable that colleges and universities should provide special opportunities for them. I would agree with this ideology to some extent, however, there should be some additional criteria that these students must satisfy. We will discuss those points in detail in the following paragraphs.

There are many students who come from poor family backgrounds and hence need some financial support. People coming from rural areas also find some difficulties in entering universities. It may be due to the low quality of secondary education. Those who belong to the remote areas are taught by junior teachers, who are still gaining some teaching experience. As a result, they could not have the maximum quality education that they should get. Also, they face severe problems in competing with other students when they participate in the registration test for entering universities. Furthermore, most of the higher educational institutions are based in large cities rather than rural areas. Therefore, the students are required to leave their houses to enroll in these study programs. Since these rural families mostly have their income from farming, leaving home is a loss of human labour for them which they could not afford. In this way, higher studies become a liability for them. Therefore, it encouraged post-secondary institutions to reserve some seats and provide some subsidies for financially challenged students.

Despite the special allocations, I believe the institutions should arrange some entry tests and academic and financial background checks for these students. Universities must guarantee that these students have some potential and keenness to learn. Also, they should achieve good academic scores in their secondary school studies, to ensure that the allocated seats and subsidized funds would not be a waste.

To conclude, students from low economic backgrounds or living in rural areas find difficulties in entering post-secondary schools. I do agree with the ideology to provide some sort of reservation for these groups of deprived students. However, some assessments should be considered for these students, therefore only those who genuinely want to study will be enrolled.
