Topic: It is commonly believed that nowadays main factors that affect a child’s development are media, pop culture and friends. A different point of view is that family plays the most significant role. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Band 8 IELTS Answer

When the topic of factors affecting a child’s development is discussed the main culprit are the influences from media, pop culture and friends (peer pressure). But there are people who subscribe to a different viewpoint and according to them family is the main factor. This essay will take a deliberative point of view towards both of these approaches and will remain neutral in evaluation.

As far as the first argument is concerned it is true that media, pop culture and friends influence a child. A child develops while consuming content from media and pop culture which means these factors are likely to play a role in a child’s development. The role they play is teaching certain kinds of behaviours to children or expanding their knowledge about certain things. Similarly, a child’s interaction with his friends also influences his development by determining their opinion.

Other people argue that it is the family that plays the most significant role in the development of a child because they are there to interact with a child right from the time they are born. A family is the first teacher of a child and all the basics required to function in society are learned from family. Family also provides an environment extremely conducive to development as members of family are likely to come to child’s aid faster than anyone else.

In conclusion, I would like to opine that all factors be it media, pop culture and friends or family – all are equally important. A child’s development is assisted by media & friends as much as their family helps them to learn new things and form opinions.

Band 7 IELTS Answer

A child’s development is affected by several factors. Some argue that it is affected by media, pop culture and friends. Others argue that family plays the most important role in the developmental process of a child. This essay aims to discuss both these perspectives, but it would argue in the favour of the latter.

The argument that a child’s development is affected by media, pop culture and friends say so because a child is constantly exposed to these. A child in all likelihood has friends and consumes some form of media or pop culture. People argue that these interactions with friends and exposure to media develops a child through shaping their attitudes and opinions. A child becomes socially functional in line with the current times because that is what media and friends can teach you. The family can’t do that because of the generation gap.

There is another section of people who believe that family plays the most significant role in a child’s development. They argue that a family is ever present at all developmental stages of a child. A child is a dependent for all intents and purposes and this dependency is on the family. A child dependent on media or friends won’t be able to survive let alone develop. Family is responsible for making sure that the child grows up to become a social individual which is the most crucial part of development.

In conclusion, I would argue that family is the most important factor when it comes to a child's development. Media, pop culture and friends oversee a part of a child’s development while the family is in charge of that process. Most of the beliefs and values that a child holds are derived from their family. A child has more exposure to the influence of their family.

Band 6.5 IELTS Answer

What factors affect a child’s development? There is no one single factor but which one is the most important? Some argue that media, pop-culture, and friends are the most important. While others argue that family plays the most significant role. This essay explores both of these viewpoints and argues in the favour of the former.

On one hand people argue that a child’s developmental process is heavily influenced by media, pop-culture, and friends. For example, a child reads a book that leads to addition in his knowledge. Similarly, pop culture provides entertainment which relaxes the child making his development positive. A friends group helps a child to learn social interaction, form opinions and enjoy companionship. All these things knowledge, relaxation, and social interaction form part of the developmental process.

On the other hand, some people argue that family plays the most important role in a child’s development. They say so because the influence of the family begins before media, pop culture and friends. Also, this influence is exerted over a child all the time and there are times when media or friends aren’t available. Family is a child’s first teacher, and a child is legally bound to stay in the sphere of influence of their family.

In conclusion, I would argue that even though the amount of influence that a family exerts is more, the quality of influence should be the deciding factor. As compared to the family, media and friends provide specialised and relevant experiences which would contribute to the development faster.
