Calling in Sick Reading Answers

Everyone gets sick once in a while and we've issued these guidelines, so that you

as an employee knows what to do when this happens.

All our staff accrue paid sick leave (PSL) from their first day. You will be able to

use your accrued PSL as paid time off:

  • to deal with our own illness, injury or health condition.
  • to take care of a family member (including domestic partners) with an illness, injury or medical appointment.

You only need a sick note from a doctor after three days in a row of being sick (including weekends). If you are ill just before or during your holiday, you can take it as sick leave instead.

When you realise that you feel too sick to come to work, you should please call the absence manager as soon as you can. When talking to him/her, briefly explain what you think is wrong with you and, if possible, when you might come back to work. If you can't get through to your line manager, write an email as soon as you can. It's important that we know you're sick as early as possible, so we can arrange cover for you to cope with urgent business that you would normally deal with.

As our company operates on weekends, we have a policy that states that if you call in sick at the weekend, you have to work the following weekend. This is not to punish you, but only to cover the time of the worker who has to work to cover you.

If you have developed any disabilities during your sickness, we are obliged to make reasonable adjustments to your work conditions, which could include shorter hours or adapting equipment.

If you are off work sick for more than four weeks, you will be considered long- term sick. A long-term sick employee is still entitled to annual leave. After eight months, we can dismiss an employee who is long-term sick, but before we can do this, we must:

  • consider if you can return to work eg working flexibly or part-time, doing different or less stressful work (with training if necessary).
  • consult with you about when you could return to work and if your health will improve.

You can take your case to an employment tribunal if you think you've been

unfairly dismissed.

Solution and Explanation

Questions 22 - 27

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDs from the text for each answer. Write your answers in boxes 22-27 on your answer sheet.

  1. From when do employees begin to build up paid sick leave?

Answer: first day
Supporting Sentence: All our staff accrue paid sick leave (PSL) from their first day.
Keywords: staff, accrue, sick leave
Keyword Location: paragraph 1
Explanation: The paragraph discusses using a sick day at work. There are 7 paragraphs in the passage. The first paragraph contains the reasoning for this answer. Everyone gets sick occasionally, so we've provided these instructions so that you, as an employee, will know what to do. Every member of our team begins accruing paid sick leave (PSL) on their first day. You can utilise the PSL you've accumulated as paid time off to take care of your own illness, accident, or medical condition. To attend to a member of the family (including domestic partners) who is ill, hurt, or has an appointment with the doctor. Thus, the answer is the first day.

  1. Who should employees telephone if they are too sick to come to work?

Answer: absence manager
Supporting Sentence: When you realise that you feel too sick to come to work, you should please call the absence manager as soon as you can
Keywords: sick, work, feel, realise
Keyword Location: paragraph 3
Explanation: The paragraph discusses using a sick leave at work. There are 7 paragraphs in the passage. The third paragraph contains the justification for this answer. It indicates that you should call the absence manager as soon as you can if you decide that you are too ill to report to work. Briefly describe what you believe is wrong with you while speaking with him or her. Whenever you might be able to return to work If your line manager isn't available, send an email as soon as you can. It's crucial that we are informed as soon as possible that you are ill so that we can set up coverage for you to handle any urgent tasks you would typically handle. Therefore the answer is absence manager.

  1. When will employees have to make up work if they call in sick at the weekend?

Answer: following weekend
Supporting Sentence: we have a policy that states that if you call in sick at the weekend, you have to work the following weekend.
Keywords: policy, sick, weekend, work
Keyword Location: paragraph 4
Explanation: The paragraph discusses using a sick leave at work. There are 7 paragraphs in the passage. In the fourth paragraph, there is an explanation for this answer. It explains that because our business is open on weekends, we have a policy. You must report to work the next weekend if you call in sick on a Friday or Saturday, according to the policy. You are not being punished; rather, this is just to make up for the time the employee has to put in to cover you. Hence, the answer is following weekend.

  1. What must employees have acquired if the company is to put reasonable adjustments into place?

Answer: disabilities
Supporting Sentence: If you have developed any disabilities during your sickness, we are obliged to make reasonable adjustments
Keywords: developed, sickness, reasonable, adjustment
Keyword Location: paragraph 5
Explanation: The paragraph deals about taking a sick leave at work. There are 7 paragraphs in the passage. In the fourth paragraph, there is an explanation for this answer. We are required to make a reasonable adjustment to your working conditions. Especially if you have acquired any limitations as a result of your illness, according to the policy. Shorter hours or equipment adaptations might be part of it. Therefore , the answer is disabilities.

  1. After how long can the company dismiss someone on long-term sickness?

Answer: 8 months
Supporting Sentence: After eight months, we can dismiss an employee who is long-term sick
Keywords: months, dismiss, employee, long term
Keyword Location: paragraph 6
Explanation: The paragraph discusses using a sick leave at work. There are 7 paragraphs in the passage. The sixth paragraph provides an explanation for this response. It indicates that you will be deemed long-term sick if you miss more than four weeks of work due to illness. Employees who are chronically unwell are still eligible for annual leave. We may terminate a long-term sick employee after eight months. Prior to doing this, though, we must first determine whether you can return to work, whether it be full- or part-time, or with a different or less demanding job. Or to discuss with you whether or not your health will improve and the potential return date for you to work. Thus, the answer is 8 months.

  1. What organisation can be appealed to if employees feel they have been fired without cause?

Answer: Employment tribunal
Supporting Sentence: You can take your case to an employment tribunal if you think you've been unfairly dismissed.
Keywords: case, dismissed, unfairly
Keyword Location: last sentence
Explanation: The paragraph discusses taking a sick leave at work. There are 7 paragraphs in the passage. The final paragraph contains the justification for this response. After eight months, we have the right to fire a long-term absentee employee. But before we do that, we need to figure out if you can go back to work, whether it be full- or part-time, or with a different or less demanding job. Or to discuss with you when you might be able to return to work and whether or not your health will improve. It provides that if you believe you were fired unfairly, you may submit your case to an employment tribunal. Therefore, the answer is employment tribunal.
