Applying To A School For Your Child Reading Answers

If you want your child to go to a school in our town, the procedures differ slightly depending on whether you require a primary or secondary school. This system should not be used for private schools, which you should get in touch with yourself if you want to educate your child privately.

For both primary and secondary schools, which school your child can go to usually depends on where you live. Each school has a catchment area and you will get preference for entry into schools within the area where you live. For both primary and secondary school applications, you should apply to three schools and indicate your preference in the way shown on the application form.

You need to apply for a primary school place the year before your child is due to start. All children must be in education the term following their fifth birthday, so most children start when they are four. Most people apply online, but paper forms are also available in most pre-schools, and from the town's Children's Information Service.

For secondary schools, the application form is slightly different, as there will be a section that must be completed by your child's teacher in your child's last year in the primary school. You need to have the teacher's email address and insert it in the appropriate place on the application form. This should be available on the primary schools' websites.

If you have just moved to our town, you should contact the Children's Information Service for advice. We can offer a place once your contracts have been exchanged or a tenancy agreement has been signed. Places can't normally be reserved more than half a term in advance.

If your child already attends a school in our town but you wish to move them to another within the town, then you will need to complete an application form and submit it to the Admissions Team.

All the school governing bodies will have done everything they can to meet the preference of parents whose applications were received by the due date in the first allocation of places within the limits of their resources. Each school has a limit on the number of pupils it can accommodate and this means that some children may not be offered a place at their preferred school, because there is no room.
