The eligibility for all the specializations of Ph.D. program is as follows:
Eligibility: The candidates who seek admission to a doctoral program must have a Second class Master’s Degree or an equivalent Degree with at least 55% aggregate marks in the subject in which the candidate wants to pursue his/her research or in an allied subject.
Examination:
All candidates who seek admission to any of the JMI's offered courses have to appear for an Entrance Test that is conducted by JMI. The entrance test is followed by an interview. The decided syllabus along with the admit cards of the registered students are made available on the University's website.
The admission test for Ph.D. courses will be done for shortlisting candidates for consideration by the Board of Studies/ Committee of Studies. Qualifying in the entrance test would not give any right to admission to the candidate. The test will have two parts. The first part will be of one hour and will contain 50 MCQs. The second part will be two hours long and have 50 MCQs and 50 subjective questions.
The following candidates will be exempted from the entrance test and can directly apply for the interview:
Candidates who have qualified UGC/CSIR NET/JRF examination or any other equivalent examination or have successfully completed regular M.Phil. program from a recognized University.
M.Phil. and Ph.D. admission are based on candidates’ performance in Written Test conducted by JMI followed by an Interview and evaluation of Research proposal. Master’s degree with 55% marks in the relevant discipline is the minimum eligibility criteria for admission.

UGC/ CSIR (JRF)/ GATE/ SLET or M.Phil passed candidates are exempted from Ph.D. Entrance Test. Teacher Fellowship holders are also exempted from the test.
JMI Ph.D. Entrance Test: The test is conducted in English medium except for Language subjects. Students have to pass both section A and B in order to be shortlisted for Interview.

Comparing School of Engineering CUSAT and Jamia Millia Islamia is not suitable as both the colleges are well established and are holding their culture and curriculum really very well. So, choosing either of them would not be easy.
But, as far as I know, Jamia Millia Islamia was established 100 years ago and is better than SOE CUSAT.
Jamia Millia Islamia will offer you a productive and competitive environment. You will also get to do lots of extracurricular activities and will get to learn from highly efficient teaching staff in JMI.
In CUSAT, you might be taught by recently graduated teachers. This will not only affect the teaching methodology but a good exposure as well.
CUSAT is nicely harnessed and handled by various Political parties for their own benefit. You can see a few strikes now and then among students and parties. But it should not be your concern as you are going to study there and grow productively.
Jamia Millia Islamia MBA is pretty good in terms of academics and placements. Around 80% of the students get placed each year. For the MBA placement of 2022, more than 25 recruiting companies visited the campus drive. The average CTC offered during campus placement is INR 4-6 LPA.
The faculties are good. Most of the faculty members are from FMS and IIMs.

I have cousins from both NIT Goa, and Jamia Millia Islamia and as they mention, the latter is famous for its CSE course. Usually, students do not leave the opportunity to go for the CSE course of Jamia Millia Islamia.
