Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a central university in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, founded in 1916 by Madan Mohan Malaviya. The University Grants Commission (UGC), under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, recognises the university. BHU functions from a single residential campus spread across more than 1,300 acres, which places it among Asia's largest residential university campuses.

In NIRF Rankings 2025, BHU holds the 10th position in the Overall category in India. Among subject rankings, IMS BHU stands at 6th in Medical, while the Faculty of Agriculture is placed 4th in Agriculture. The Varanasi campus brings together faculties such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Social Sciences, Law, Management Studies, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, and the Institute of Medical Sciences.

The university is also known for the Sir Sunder Lal Hospital, which is linked to IMS BHU. The hospital has more than 2,000 beds and works as a major tertiary care centre for eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The total programme fee starts below INR 1 Lakh for many humanities courses and goes up to INR 3,20,000 for professional B.Tech courses in food and dairy technology.

At the postgraduate medical level, IMS BHU offers MD, MS, DM, and M.Ch. The university also runs LLM, M.Com, and MA courses through its humanities and social science departments.

BHU Admission Process

Admission at BHU depends on the course group. CUET UG is the main route for undergraduate courses in arts, science, commerce, and law. For MBBS and BDS, students must qualify NEET UG and take part in MCC counselling. MBA admission is based on CAT, followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview in Varanasi.

UG Admission (BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BALLB)

Students applying for regular UG courses at BHU need a valid CUET UG 2026 score. After CUET results, applicants must register on the BHU CAP-UG portal at bhucuet.samarth.edu.in. Class 12 percentage is not counted in the merit score and is used only to break a tie. Important points for UG admission are:

  • Students must take the CUET UG domain papers required for the BHU course they choose
  • BHU BALLB Hons accepts CUET UG, not CLAT, and students must apply through the BHU CAP-UG portal
  • Students who accept an allotment must pay a commitment fee of INR 2,500 for General, OBC, and EWS, and INR 500 for SC, ST, and PwD
  • Central government reservation rules apply to all UG courses

BHU does not have a management quota. Every seat is filled on merit.

MBBS and BDS Admission (IMS BHU)

IMS BHU has 100 MBBS seats and 63 BDS seats. Because BHU is a central university, MCC counselling at mcc.nic.in allotts all seats, including the institutional quota. UP state NEET counselling does not cover IMS BHU seats. Applicants need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, along with a valid NEET UG 2026 score. The minimum PCB aggregate is 50% for General and EWS, and 40% for SC, ST, and OBC-NCL. The NEET UG closing rank for BHU MBBS General Category has usually stayed within the top 20,000 to 30,000 because the centrally funded seat is in high demand.

MBA Admission

The Institute of Management Studies at BHU has 136 total MBA seats, including 118 regular seats and 18 paid seats, across MBA and MBA (International Business). Selection uses a composite score with CAT carrying 50%, Academic Record 20%, Group Discussion 15%, and Personal Interview 15%. General and EWS applicants need at least 50% marks in graduation, while SC and ST applicants need 45%. GD and PI are held offline at the Varanasi campus. Admission for the 2026-28 batch runs on the CAT 2025 cycle.

PG Admission (MA, M.Sc, M.Com, LLM)

Most BHU PG courses accept CUET PG scores. M.Sc Life Sciences accepts GAT-B score. After results, students register on the BHU PG portal at admission.bhu.ac.in.

BHU Placements and Career Outcomes

Placement results at BHU differ by faculty and course. NIRF 2025 data reports that 626 UG students and 1,341 PG students were placed in the latest reported cycle. The median package was INR 9 LPA for UG 4-year courses and INR 9 LPA for PG 2-year courses. PG 3-year courses, including medical PG programmes, recorded a median package of INR 13.5 LPA.

Programme LevelStudents PlacedMedian Package
UG (4-year programmes)626INR 9 LPA
PG (2-year programmes)1,341INR 9 LPA
PG (3-year / Medical PG)Included aboveINR 13.5 LPA

MBA students from the Institute of Management Studies are placed in banking, finance, FMCG, and consulting roles. MBA recruiters include public sector banks, insurance companies, and mid-size companies. MBBS graduates from IMS BHU usually prepare for NEET PG for MD or MS admission. Their main career options are government service and private hospital roles. The IMS BHU internship stipend follows central government rules. Law graduates from BHU appear for judicial services, civil services, and legal practice in the Varanasi and Allahabad High Court regions.

BHU Rankings

BHU appears in several NIRF 2025 categories. Its strongest listed positions are in Agriculture and Medical, showing the performance of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Institute of Medical Sciences.

BHU Campus and Infrastructure

BHU's main campus covers more than 1,300 acres in Varanasi and is counted among Asia's largest university campuses. It works like a campus township with academic departments, hostels, a hospital, temples, markets, sports areas, and residential quarters. The campus is located along the Ganga in Varanasi.

The Sir Sunder Lal Hospital, attached to IMS BHU, has more than 2,000 beds and serves as a teaching hospital and tertiary care centre for eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The Faculty of Performing Arts has separate spaces for music, dance, and theatre. The library system includes a central library and reading rooms at the faculty level. University-run hostels house thousands of students, and hostel allotment is based on merit and proximity rules.

Students can reach the campus from Varanasi Junction railway station and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. The main entrance is the BHU gate at Lanka on the Grand Trunk Road. The campus also has playgrounds, an indoor sports complex, and facilities for cricket, football, and athletics. BHU's annual cultural and tech events receive participation from universities across India.

BHU vs Delhi University vs AMU

Students comparing large central universities often look at Banaras Hindu University, Delhi University, and Aligarh Muslim University together. All three are UGC-recognised central universities and use CUET for regular UG admission in major programmes across arts, sciences, commerce, law, and related fields.

DU offers a wide UG course base in Delhi's urban and professional environment, along with FMS Delhi for MBA. AMU has a similar residential central university model with strength in STEM and humanities in western Uttar Pradesh. Students should compare campus life, course depth, and distance from home before choosing among the three.

In agriculture there is a lot to study and I think every subject that we study is of great importance be it principles of genetics or be it economics... Definitely they have made this course very much productive in terms of placement and also in terms of higher studies if you wanna do MSc these will help you a lot there..

Placement Experience:

Placement are good but generally students prefer higher studies after bsc because the curriculum of bhu bsc agriculture is such that you develop intrest in research rather than just being job oriented. But If you want to go for placements there also are many opportunities including the dedicated placement cell that helps you conquer in every situation.. The avg placement in bhu is around 4-5 lacs and 100% students get placed that sit for placements.

Although BHU has the best faculty and management, many students tend to leave BHU after a few days. They feel isolated and homesick. Also, the teachers have a lot of political influence. The administration does not let you take a stand for yourself. A lot of inter students riots take place here.

Also, BHU has a sustaining hierarchy and preferential treatment that seeps down to the education part as well. Ex-students become professors without external exposure. So they bring much lesser value in terms of ethics, fair marking, and admission system.

I think these are some minor reasons why students keep leaving BHU after admission.

Firstly, the hostel fees at BHU vary from course to course. So all I can do is give you a rough estimate through the information I got from my sister who pursued B.Sc from BHU.

Hostel Fees

  • 1st semester stood: INR 2666
  • 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th semester: INR 1290 (regular fee and hostel fee both)
  • 3rd, 5th, and 7th: INR 3190 (regular fee and hostel fee)

Mess Charges:

  • INR 40 for a simple diet
  • INR 60 for special
  • INR 80 for chicken

Usually, there are 2 diets a day and on Sundays, there is only one diet. But the Sunday meal is special so it is counted as a double diet. So the approximate price stands at INR 80-100 per day.

If you skip the meal or go home then you can tell Mess Maharaj and you won’t be charged.

There are 2 types of seats in BHU:

  • Regular seats

  • Paid seats

For the regular seats you need to pay minimal fees.

For the paid seats, you have to pay an additional fee apart from the regular fee.

If your rank is near the cutoff, then BHU offers paid seats to give you a second chance provided that you pay an additional fee. There are around 10% paid seats in every faculty.

You have to apply separately at the time of counseling. Attend the counseling session to fill in your choice of combination. If your name appears in the list of 10% of students you can get admitted to the university after paying the fees and additional amount.

This amount gets revised every year. Visit the university’s official website for more information.

BHU and AMU are sister concerns. Both institutes carry forward the same legacy so I don’t think they are comparable.

People usually want to believe that these biased universities will divide Hindus and Muslims and worsen their relations. But that’s not the case.

Both universities are loyal to their cause- Education.

As an AMU student, my sister loves her university. She has never visited BHU but she is sure BHU students love their university equally as well.

So I don’t think the two universities stand a chance of comparison when they both are equally good.

To say, one of these is better than the other will be an oversimplification. You should choose BHU or DU based on the course you are interested in. Here is a streamwise comparison of DU and BHU.

Arts - For English and Economics, DU is better. BHU courses are better for Sanskrit, Hindi, Geography, and Philosophy. For the rest of these subjects, these institutes are at a similar level.

Science - BHU is slightly ahead for most of the science stream.

Commerce - For commerce courses, DU is definitely better.

Engineering - It won’t be fair to compare IIT BHU with DU. The former is way ahead of the latter.

Management - FMS is a tier 1 B-School and arguably the best non-IIM school in the country. IMS BHU ranks nowhere near FMS.

Law - For law degrees, DU has a slight advantage because of its location.

Medical - IMS BHU is one of the best medical institutes in the country.

Academics are more or less the same at BHU and DU. However, big names like St. Stephens, SRCC, LSR, etc. are a little ahead of BHU in terms of teaching quality. BHU offers better research facilities, especially for science courses. DU is way ahead of BHU in terms of corporate jobs and civil services.

BHU offers a better campus experience compared to DU. But if we talk about location, choosing a metropolitan city, Delhi will be more advantageous. You will have greater exposure and opportunities

The video comprises a comparative analysis of both universities

If you are getting into one of the top colleges at DU. You should go for it. If you are getting an average college, it’s still better to prefer DU for Commerce, Economics and English. BHU science faculty is good. If you are interested in a Science degree, you can choose BHU.

Banaras Hindu University or BHU is not just better but it’s the best for UPSC preparation. There are many examples of students passing the UPSC exam from this university. One such example is Sachin Kumar. He was a student of MA (Political Science) and managed to top the CAPF exam without any extra tuition. His delegation combined with the university’s quality education helped him climb the ladder.

I have mentioned some pros of the university to explain why you should go for BHU:

  • Hostels- The best thing about BHU has to be its amazing hostels with great facilities and surrounded with lush green beauty. The ambiance is perfect for the preparation of any kind of exam. The AND hostel is one of the best. The hostels are extremely affordable around INR 80 per month.

  • Facilities- Every resident of the hostel can easily access the classes, food, playground, gym, pool, and other facilities. Free Wi-Fi facility is also available 24/7.

  • Social activities- The hostels at BHU celebrate all the festivals which bring together students from different communities. This helps develop an emotional bond and makes hostel life memorable.

All in all, BHU is the right choice for UPSC preparation. You will not regret your decision.

BHU offers a vibrant campus life. Many cultural events and extra-curricular activities take place around the academic year. You will hardly find a day without any such activities happening on campus.

The campus is huge and lush green. BHU offers excellent facilities to students such as the university library, many cafeterias, various clubs, etc. Food offered at the mess is average. IIT offers better food in comparison. Bus services are available for students. Having a personal bi-cycle, scooter, or bike will be helpful, in commuting.

The academics offered by BHU are good and the professors are helpful. The examinations are easy in general but you will have to put in extra effort, to secure good placements.
