Course Description

NIT Patna is inviting applications for admission to its PhD Program for the academic year 2023. The applications for PHD admission can be filled till June 27.

NIT Patna PhD admissions are based on screening test and Interview round conducted by the institute itself. NIT Patna offers 113 seats to students pursuing PhD degree. Per semester fee for a NIT Patna PhD regular and part-time degree is INR 42,950. PhD program at NIT Patna is specialized in 10 courses. NIT Patna PhD Eligibility Criteria

For admission to any of the above-mentioned Ph.D. programs, the candidates must possess the following qualifications:

Masters degree or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline with at least 6.5 CGPA or 60% marks in aggregate from a recognized institute or university.
B. Tech/ B.E./ B. Arch or equivalent degree in a relevant discipline with at least 8.5 CGPA or 80 percent marks in aggregate from a recognized university.
Relaxation of 5% will be provided to candidates belonging to the SC/ ST/PwD categories.
The sponsored candidates will be exempted from GATE/ NET qualification.

NIT Patna PhD Admission 2023

Admission to the institute is made on the grounds of eligibility and the performance of the candidate in the written exam and the screening process. The admission committee of each department conducts its own screening/selection process. The candidate has to appear for the admission test and interview separately for each of the disciplines that she/he has applied for.

NIT Patna PhD Admission Process

There are three stages involved in the NIT Patna PhD admission process:

Admission screening test question: The stage is only for Full Time Institute Fellowship. This round involves 40% of the total marks required to get admission at NIT Patna PhD. The 40% marks scale is for Gen/ OBC students. SC/ ST category students get 35 % of the total marks. Syllabus for screening test is Syllabus of GATE/NET Exam of respective discipline.
Interview: Candidates qualifying the screening test are called for the interview round.
Merit list: Merit list is prepared by the admission committee based on the marks obtained in the previous rounds. To get selected, NIT Patna PhD cut off marks should be more than 50%. Selected candidates shall be notified on Institute website bythe Academic Section.

How to Apply?

All the candidates are required to fill up the application provided on the institute’s official website.

One must register with their email id to receive the login credentials.
After successfully logging in, the candidate has to fill up the application form.
Once registered under part Time Ph.D. program at the institute, the conversion of candidature will not be permitted.
The candidate will be required to upload a scanned copy of their photograph and signature.
The application fees should be paid online only through the Institute’s website.
The applicant has to pay a fee of INR 1500/- (INR 750/- for SC/ ST)
After submission of the online application, the candidate should download the printed application for future reference.
Applicants from SC/ ST category must enclose a valid Certificate issued by a competent authority to claim relaxation in application Fee.
A candidate can apply for multiple departments (if s/he is eligible for that discipline) but separately.

NIT Patna PhD Course Details

The NIT Patna Ph.D. Program Structure consists of the following stages:
- Course work and evaluation
- Research proposal submission and assessment
- Periodic assessment of research progress
- Pre-synopsis seminar and synopsis submission
- Submission of Ph.D. thesis and adjudication
In case of theory, a component/ course candidate is required to appear at Mid and End semester examination for 40% and 60% of full marks respectively.
In case of Lab Component/ course (practical work) a candidate is required to work in the Institute or at any other Institute of National Importance/ Research organization approved by the DRC.
PhD course work requirements can also be fulfilled by taking online courses such as MOOCs. Credit of such courses will be considered for fulfillment of requirement of total credit for completion of course work.

NIT Patna PhD Stipend

NIT Patna PhD stipend is given to all the research scholars admitted to the research program except the sponsored scholars and members of staff of the Institute. Stipend to these categories of scholars is given as per the rules of MHRD, Govt. of India. Monthly stipend given to NIT Patna PhD scholars is around INR 31,000 to INR 34,500.

Ques. What is the eligibility criteria required for UGC NET?

Ans. To be eligible for UGC NET the candidate must be:

A Master’s Degree holder with a minimum aggregate of 55%
Younger than 28 years of age to apply for the junior research fellowship.
There is no upper age limit to apply for Assistant Professorship.

Ques. What basic documents candidates are required to bring at the time of Interview at NIT Patna?

Ans. The candidates are required to bring the following documents at the time of interview:

Ques. Are there any scholarships provided to the NIT Patna Ph.D. students?

Ans. The Institute offers Research Fellowship to the eligible students as per MoE, GOI norms. The period and amount of research fellowship shall be as per notification of the competent authority from time to time. Selected candidates are required to execute an undertaking/ agreement bond mentioning that they will refund the stipend/scholarship/assistantship received from the Institute in the case of leaving the programme without its completion, irrespective of the reasons at his/her end on the prescribed format.

Someone else's package doesn't guarantee that you'll also bag the same package. Out of mentioned options, NIT Patna is a better option not because of the 40 lakh package. The placement package had been offered by Adobe which is said to recruit 2 ladies each offering 20 lakh packages to each. But in 2018, Adobe hired a female student offering her 40 LPA package, which can be true or even wrong information. However, you should not take admission in NIT Patna just because someone bagged a 40 Lakh package. The package will depend on your dedication during the course. It will help you easily earning a 6-8 LPA package. The locality surrounding the campus is very unpleasant.The good thing is that the campus is located beside Ganga, having some modern and beautiful ghats. The management and staff are strict and less creative.

According to my friends at IIIT Guwahati, CSE at IIIT Guwahati is definitely a better choice. Let me provide some points which will give you a better insight into the colleges. The campus of NIT Puducherry is almost 130 km away from the city, located in a remote place known as Karaikal. This hampers placements. In NIT Puducherry, 90-95% of students are from South India. So, students from other parts of the country face a serious linguistic problem. For most North Indian Students, it is somewhat hard to sustain in the South Indian culture. IIIT Guwahati has experienced rapid growth over the last few years, which makes it a much better choice than NIT Patna/ Puducherry. There is no home state quota in IIIT Guwahati, so there is no such problem of linguistics as in NITs. In addition, there are 18 students in IIIT Guwahati who are from abroad, selected through the DASA UG scheme of 18 seats. From 2019, the B.Tech seats were increased by 33% for Girl Supernumerary Quota, because the previous batch had only 3.5% girls. The total number of seats from then is 233. As one of my close friends studied in the computer science department at NIT Patna, I can say that it is not at the same level as that of IIIT Allahabad. IIIT Allahabad is much more effective compared to NIT. Having studied at IIIT Allahabad, let me give you some facts as to why it stands out. IIIT Allahabad focuses on programming languages extremely well for those who are planning to master this field. Many MNCs also hire students from IIIT Allahabad. Many top global companies like Facebook and Google hire young students for their talent. You will probably not find these opportunities at NIT Patna. Moreover, IIIT Allahabad also has a really big 100-acre campus with 24/7 lab facilities. Compared to this, Patna is quite small. If you are staying in the hostel, the facilities there are good too. Lastly, if you are into sports, these facilities are not available at NIT Patna as compared to IIIT Allahabad. In a nutshell, there are multiple core companies that visit the campus during the placement drive. These include major firms like Alston transport, L&T HED, L&T Constructions, Thermal, Havells, TATA Motors and many others. Other than these few, various other students secure placement offers in companies belonging to the IT sector and the Consultancy services.
