Naturally, BITS Goa and Hyderabad weren’t planned randomly. There are years of strategic planning behind the establishment of these campuses.
I learned from one of the faculties of BITS Pilani that the late Mr. K. K Birla wanted to expand BITS campuses way back in 1990s and assigned the task to the administration to find a suitable location for the second campus. During the tech boom of the 90s, IT companies were setting up shops everywhere in cities like Bangalore, Mumbai. They strategically choose Goa as it is between these two locations and well-connected because of its airport. The location also helped them attract faculties from IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore. Mr. Monahar Parrikar, then CM approved the project quickly, and that’s how it was possible to set up the Goa campus so quickly.
The Hyderabad campus also has a similar story. Mr. Chandra Babu Naidu, the CM of united Andra Pradesh back then, requested BITS to set up a campus in Hyderabad. He provided land for the campus and construction work was quick to follow. When the first batch joined in 20008, the infrastructure was already done.
Before the Covid - 19 pandemic situation, BITS Pilani Goa used to arrange fresher's parties for the incoming students. The student council used to arrange DJ nights. Every year there used to be a competition for Mr. and Miss Frasher. Food for the event used to be prepared by the mess.
BITS Pilani Goa has a decent placement record. According to the placement highlights of 2021, the average CTC offered was INR 16 LPA. While the highest CTC was INR 43.3 LPA. The placement average is 91%. Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Cisco are some of the major recruiters that visit the campus placements.
CS in BITS Goa is better. It offers better placements compared to NIT Calicut. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, IBM, Amazon, and Uber visit BITS Goa placements. The average CTC offered to CSE students in the campus placement is INR 15-20 LPA. Almost every student of the branch receives recruitment through the campus drive.
BITS offers better learning resources and facilities. The student crowd of the institute is excellent, owing to their no reservation policy.
All the three campuses of BITS, Pilani have been recognized as the Institutes of Eminence. The Goa campus is no exception and gets all the funds under the MHRD for any such purpose.
Getting back to your question of whether your decision was right or wrong varies. Something that may seem correct to you might not give the same feeling to someone else.
If you check out the ranks of engineering colleges in India, NIT Rourkela has a better ranking. But that does not mean that BITS Goa is bad.
Always remember that there is no such thing as a right or wrong decision. If you have made a certain decision, stick to it and try with all your might to make that work.
The rooms are very spacious, with enough room for 8-10 people to hang out comfortably. You will find everything in the room to be cool and comfortable. Moreover, the weather in Goa is quite pleasant, so you won't have any trouble staying indoors in your room all day. From 2018 onwards, most students are allotted double-sharing rooms for the first year of their stay.
The hostels are relatively new as they were completed only in 2018-2019, which means they are immaculate, tidy, and well-maintained. The bathrooms are of western style, with 10 toilets per floor, almost like the ones you would find in a decent mall. You will have access to hot water throughout the day, and even at night if you plan on playing football at 12:30 AM.
If you are staying in D-hostels 1-4, you will be allotted a double sharing room that comes equipped with a cot, a big almirah with a fitted mirror, table, chair (not wooden), whiteboard, and a few storage racks. The rooms are spacious enough for 10-12 people to hang out comfortably. The electricity and internet facilities are excellent, although there have been a few power cuts lately, which may be a legitimate problem or just cost-cutting measures.
The common room in the hostel is huge when compared to the older senior hostels. It comes with a table tennis table, carrom board, chess board, and of course, a TV with cable.
After getting admission, there are a few things that can drag your CGPA down in the institute.
From Student’s end
From Faculty’s end
The grading system at BITS Goa is not up to the mark. More weightage is given to cramming which leads to poor performance of students well-equipped with practical skills.
Overall, the institute is excellent. But some of the above things can affect the grades and motivation of the students.
There is nothing called instrumentation engineering. The students usually study the syllabus of the electronic branch that includes learning low-level languages along with the complete command of them.
If you wish to join the private sector, then only the placement facility provided by the college is useful to you.
Categories | Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering at BITS Goa | Instrumentation and Control Engineering at NIT Trichy |
Course Fee | 19.19 lakh | 5.65 lakh |
Highest CTC | 24 LPA | 22 LPA |
Average CTC | 12 LPA | 10-11 LPA |
Recruiting Companies | Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Western Digital, JP Morgan, etc. | TCS, Infosys, Reliance, Morgan Stanley, etc. |
Last but not least we can say that the college for the instrumentation branch is the version of the electronics branch of engineering. It totally depends on you how much effort you are putting into the same and not depend on the college.
It is seen that joining every college has its advantages and disadvantages, no matter how renowned college it is. BITS Goa has very few reasons to not go there as everything is the best be it the campus, faculty, peers, or activities.
However, I feel there is a disadvantage at the campus. There is no mandatory attendance system followed which will make you very lazy and often led to missing classes. You will then depend upon the last-minute notes for preparing for exams.
If finances are an issue, then BITS Goa isn’t the right place to go unless you come under the EWS category (total family income less than 11 LPA).
BITS Goa is one of the most expensive engineering colleges in India. A B.E degree can end up costing about 19 to 20 lakhs for 4 years and an M.Sc degree about 19 lakhs. If you are from general category, BITS Goa will dent your wallet for the next few years.
Besides being one of the best engineering NITs in the country, the fees for NIT Calicut are much, much lighter around 5.5 lakhs for 4 years. Getting a Circuit branch is no easy task as the cutoffs are pretty high. If you’re getting ECE here, and money is an issue, then this is the place to go.
Although, if you’re under the EWS section, BITS Goa will offer scholarships based on your performance in the first year. If you’re able to obtain a CGPA of 8.5+, then a scholarship of 80% is awarded. For a CGPA of 7.5, a scholarship of 40% is awarded, and so on.
