Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) has invited GATE qualifiers for the post of Assistant Engineer Trainee in Civil, Electrical and Electronics disciplines. After successful completion of 1 year training period, they shall be absorbed in the company as Engineers at E2 level.

GATE 2020 is scheduled for February 01, 02, 08 and 09, 2020 in online mode. Candidates meeting minimum eligibility criteria can apply from September 1 to October 1, 2020. After filling the application form candidates can download GATE Admit Card from January 04, 2020.

Job Profile for Electrical

Selected candidates will undergo training for a period of one year at POWERGRID sites and training institutes.After the completion of training, the candidates will be honored with the position of an Engineer E2 level.

The job profile of Engineer (Electrical) includes planning, design, engineering, quality assurance, inspection, erection, testing and commissioning of 132 kV /220kV /400 kV/ 765 kV/ 1200 kV/ HVDC Sub-station,Transmission line,Power system protective relays,substation automation system,Power Line Carrier Communication,SCADA system, Control and Instrumentation system, implementation of smart grid, Research and Development, etc.

Construction, operation, maintenance, erection, testing and commissioning, cost estimation, project cost control activities of EHVA/HVDC, HVDC B/B Transmission system is also included.

Assignment related to Commercial, Engineering, Contracts and Materials, Load dispatch and Communication of Transmission system, system operation, telecom, etc. is the part of the job.

The engineer has to maintain coordination with internal and external stakeholders, etc.and any other related work assigned to individual from time to time.


PGCIL Compensation Package

Selected candidates will be placed in the pay scale of INR 40000 – 3% – 140000 (IDA) during the one-year training period. The stipend will be paid in the form of Basic Pay of INR 40000 along with IDA, HRA and Perks @12% of basic pay during the training period.

The corporation offers a very attractive pay package which is one of the best in the industry. On successful completion of training, the candidates will be absorbed as Engineers in E2 scale - INR 50000 –  3% 160000/- (IDA).

Service Agreement Bond

The selected candidates will be required to execute a service agreement bond to successfully complete the prescribed training period. Then they will be required to serve the organization for at least three years.

The amount of the bond is INR 500000 plus applicable taxes for General/OBC (NCL) candidates and INR 250000 plus applicable taxes for SC/ST/PwD candidates.

GATE PGCIL Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for the available post is as follow:

  • A candidate must have a degree in B.E./ B.Tech./ B.Sc.(Engg) in the streams of electrical/electrical (power)/ electrical and electronics/power systems engineering, from any recognized University/Institute with minimum 65% marks or equivalent CGPA.
  • A candidate whose qualification is completing the course of AIME electrical with minimum 65% marks with both sections A & B cleared.
  • Upper age limit: candidates age limit should be 18-28 years as on 31st December 2020; age relaxation will be applicable as per rules.
  • Candidates must secure GATE cut off marks as stipulated by various PSU’s.

Reservation for Electrical

According to the Government of India Directives, a certain number of seats is reserved under different categories for candidates qualifying PGCIL GATE PSU Recruitment. Candidates belonging to the reserved category must also have fulfill the eligibility criteria of PGCIL GATE.

Categories which fall under PGCIL recruitment through GATE for the job of Executive Trainee, reservation of seat are:

  1. OBC (NCL): The reservation for OBC (NCL) is subject to submission of a copy of OBC (NCL) certificate along with NCL declaration in the format prescribed by the Govt. of India for “Appointment to Posts under Govt. of India” from a competent authority at time of interview, of called for.
  2. SC / ST candidates: reservation for SC & ST candidates is subject to submission of Caste certificate in the GOI prescribed format issued by a competent authority at time of interview, if called for.
  3. Persons with Disability: The reservation for persons with disability is subject to submission of Disability Certificate issued by a Government Medical Board at time of interview, in the format prescribed by Govt. of India, if called for.
  4. J&K Domicile / Ex-servicemen / Victims of riots: The reservation is subject to submission of Age relaxation cum Domicile certificate / Discharge certificate in the prescribed format issued by a competent authority at the time of interview, if called for.

GATE PGCIL Selection Process

The aspiring candidates who will appear for the Electrical Engineering paper of GATE exam should have obtained a valid score to make themselves eligible for the selection process. The score is valid only if the candidate obtains more than or equal to the qualifying marks as fixed for the EE paper of GATE 2020.

The selection process will include the Normalized Marks (out of 100) obtained by the eligible candidates in the EE paper of GATE 2020, followed by Group Discussion and Personal Interview for GATE qualified candidates. Candidates are shortlisted category wise for the GD and interview. Candidates shall have the option for appearing the Group Discussion / Personal Interview in English or Hindi.

Qualifying Marks in GATE

The qualifying marks for GATE Examination shall be as per the criteria adopted by GATE examination conducting authority for different categories.

Shortlisting of Eligible candidates for GD and interview

Qualified candidates shall be short listed category wise for Group discussion and Personal interview based on their normalized marks (out of 100) in the EE paper of GATE 2020.

Candidates shortlisted for the Group discussion and Interview shall be required to submit the document as may be mentioned in their individual communication to be sent through email / candidate login.

Qualifying marks in GD and Interview

GD will not have any qualifying marks. Interview will have qualifying marks for different categories as mentioned below

  1. Qualifying marks in the interview for the unreserved category is 40%.
  2. Qualifying marks in the interview for the OBC (NCL) category is 30%.
  3. Qualifying marks in the interview for the SC / ST category is 30%.
  4. Qualifying marks in the interview for the Persons with Disability category is 30%.

Weightage to Different Parameters

For calculation of final score of a candidate for empanelment. The weightages assigned to the marks obtained in GATE 2020, Group Discussion and Interview shall be indicated below

  1. GATE Score 2017: 85%
  2. Weighatge to Group Discussion: 3%
  3. Weightage to Personal Interview: 12%

Empanelment of Candidates

Candidates who qualify in the Personal Interview will only be adjudged suitable for empanelment. The candidates will have to qualify in GATE 2020 and in personal interview separately in order to be considered eligible for empanelment.

The Offer of Appointment shall be issued to the suitable candidates in the order of category wise merit and based on requirement.

Appointment of selected candidates will be subject to their being found medically fir in the Pre-Employment Medical Examination


GATE PGCIL General Instructions

  1. Only Indian Nationals of age 18 years or above are eligible to apply for POWERGRID.
  2. Before applying, the candidate should ensure that he/ she fulfills the eligibility criteria and other norms mentioned in this advertisement.
  3. Essential qualification should be recognized and from a recognized institution or University.
  4. Management reserves the right to cancel / restrict / enlarge / modify / alter the recruitment / selection process, if need so arises, without issuing any further notice or assigning any reason thereafter.
  5. Date of issuance of final mark sheet shall be taken as the date of acquiring a qualification.
  6. Wherever CGPA / OGPA / DGPA or Letter Grade in a degree/diploma is awarded, its equivalent percentage of marks must be indicated in the application form as per norms adopted by University / Institute.
  7. Percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree shall be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case the candidates are awarded grades / CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades / CGPA to percentage of marks shall be based on the procedure certified by the university/institution from where they have obtained the bachelor’s degree.
  8. Legal jurisdiction will be NCT of Delhi in case of any cause / dispute.
  9. Mere appearance in GATE or submission of application to POWERGRID does not guarantee the adequacy of candidature for being considered for further selection process.
  10. Candidates claiming reservation under OBC (NCL) should belong to OBC- Non-Creamy Layer as on last date of online submission of application to POWERGRID.

Result List for Electrical

After completion of all rounds such as group discussion and personal interview, the only wait is for the result of power grid recruitment through GATE. 

The candidates can check their result, entering date of birth, password and roll number as specified correctly. All the candidates need to download result of Power Grid Assistant Engineer Trainee to know they are qualified or not.
