    GATE Metallurgical Engineering (MT) Syllabus 2023 is based on the topics studied at the graduation level and has been divided into 7 sections: Engineering Mathematics, Metallurgical Thermodynamics, Transport Phenomenon and Rate Process, Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy, Physical Metallurgy, Mechanical Metallurgy and Manufacturing Process. An additional section on General Aptitude is also part of GATE Metallurgical Engineering Syllabus 2023 with about 15% weightage in the question paper.Check GATE 2023 Exam Pattern

    GATE 2023 will be conducted on February 4, 5, 11 & 12 by IIT Kanpur. GATE Metallurgical Engineering question paper will consist of 65 questions worth 100 marks. Candidates choosing Metallurgical Engineering (MT) as their first paper have a choice for selecting either Physics (PH) or Engineering Sciences (XE) as their second paper.     Metallurgical Engineering refers to the the study of metals. It is the combination of theory and practical programs that covers topics like mining, extraction, design, and processing of metals, as well as how metals react to environmental changes or stress.

    GATE Metallurgical Engineering (MT) Syllabus 2023 is divided into seven sections as mentioned below:

    Section 1: Engineering Mathematics Syllabus

    Section 2: Metallurgical Thermodynamics

    • Laws of thermodynamics: First law – energy conservation, Second law - entropy; Enthalpy, Gibbs and Helmholtz free energy; Maxwell’s relations; Chemical potential; Applications to metallurgical systems, solutions, ideal and regular solutions; Gibbs phase rule, phase equilibria, binary phase diagram and lever rule, free-energy vs. composition diagrams; Equilibrium constant, Activity, Ellingham and phase stability diagrams; Thermodynamics of point defects, surfaces and interfaces, adsorption and segregation phenomena.
    • Electrochemistry: Single electrode potential, Electrochemical cells, Nernst equation, Potential-pH diagrams

    Section 3: Transport Phenomena and Rate Processes

    • Momentum transfer: Concept of viscosity, shell balances, Bernoulli’s equation, mechanical energy balance equation, flow past plane surfaces and through pipes.
    • Heat transfer: Conduction, Fourier’s Law, 1-D steady state conduction
    • Convection: Heat transfer coefficient relations for forced convection
    • Radiation: Black body radiation, Stefan-Boltzman Law, Kirchhoff’s Law
    • Mass transfer: Diffusion and Fick’s laws, Mass transfer coefficients
    • Dimensional analysis: Buckingham Pi theorem, Significance of dimensionless numbers
    • Basic laws of chemical kinetics: First order reactions, reaction rate constant, Arrhenius relation, heterogeneous reactions, oxidation kinetics
    • Electrochemical kinetics: Polarization

    Section 4: Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy

    • Comminution techniques, Size classification, Flotation, Gravity and other methods of mineral beneficiation; Agglomeration: sintering, pelletizing and briquetting
    • Material and Energy balances in metallurgical processes; Principles and processes for the extraction of non- ferrous metals – aluminum, copper and titanium
    • Iron and steel making: Material and heat balance in blast furnace; Structure and properties of slags and molten salts – basicity of slags - sulphide and phosphate capacity of slags; Production of metallurgical coke
    • Other methods of iron making (COREX, MIDRE)
    • Primary steel making: Basic oxygen furnace, process dynamics, oxidation reactions, electric arc furnace
    • Secondary steel making: Ladle process – deoxidation, argon stirring, desulphurization, inclusion shape control, principles of degassing methods; Basics of stainless steel manufacturing
    • Continuous Casting: Fluid flow in the tundish and mould, heat transfer in the mould, segregation, inclusion control

    Section 5: Physical Metallurgy

    • Chemical Bonding: Ionic, covalent, metallic, and secondary bonding in materials, Crystal structure of solids – metals and alloys, ionic and covalent solids, and polymers
    • X-ray Diffraction – Bragg’s law, optical metallography, principles of SEM imaging
    • Crystal Imperfections: Point, line and surface defects; Coherent, semi-coherent and incoherent interfaces
    • Diffusion in solids: Diffusion equation, steady state and error function solutions; Examples- homogenization and carburization; Kirkendall effect; Uphill diffusion; Atomic models for interstitial and substitutional diffusion; Pipe diffusion and grain boundary diffusion
    • Phase transformation: Driving force, Homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation, growth kinetics
    • Solidification in isomorphous, eutectic and peritectic systems, cast structures and macrosegregation, dendritic solidification and constitutional supercooling, coring and microsegregation
    • Solid state transformations: Precipitation, spinodal decomposition, ordering, massive transformation, discontinuous precipitation, eutectoid transformation, diffusionless transformations; Precipitate coarsening, Gibbs-Thomson effect

    Section 6: Mechanical Metallurgy

    • Strain tensor and stress tensor, Representation by Mohr’s circle, elasticity, stiffness and compliance tensor, Yield criteria, Plastic deformation by slip and twinning
    • Dislocation theory: Edge, screw and mixed dislocations, source and multiplication of dislocations, stress fields around dislocations; Partial dislocations, dislocation interactions and reactions
    • Strengthening mechanisms: Work/strain hardening, strengthening due to grain boundaries, solid solution, precipitation and dispersion

    • Metal casting: Mould design involving feeding, gating and risering, casting practices, casting defects
    • Hot, warm and cold working of metals: Metal forming – fundamentals of metal forming processes of rolling, forging, extrusion, wire drawing and sheet metal forming, defects in forming
    • Metal joining: Principles of soldering, brazing and welding, welding metallurgy, defects in welded joints in steels and aluminum alloys

    • GATE Paper consists of 3 parts namely General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics and specific core subjects of the paper
    • The question paper comprises a total of 65 questions.
    • There are two types of questions in GATE : Multiple Choice type (MCQ) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT).
    • Questions will be asked in random order and one has to select one answer (for MCQ type) or enter the answer ( for NAT questions) using a mouse and a virtual keyboard.
    • Students have to attempt all the questions in a duration of three hours. 
    • The maximum number of questions in GATE 2023 would be from the core subjects.

    First of all, candidates are advised to go through the syllabus, exam pattern, marking scheme, books, etc because they all are very important while preparing for the exam. After that you can follow the preparation tips provided below:

    1. Target Based Study Plan

    • Daily Target: Set a target to complete 1-2 topics in a day. This will help you in completing your syllabus early. 
    • Weekly Target: Your weekly target should include completion of 6-7 topics, revisions of all these topics, attempting the mock tests or solving previous years papers related to these topics. Observe the level of your performance. 
    • Monthly Target: If you are following a daily or weekly plan then you can skip monthly plans. However, if you want to set a monthly goal then you must divide your whole syllabus into months. For example, if your syllabus has 16 major topics and you have 5 months left for preparation then you can complete 4 topics in 1 month i. e. 4 topics X 4 months = 16 topics.

    Ans. Andhra University M.Tech admission is done in two ways, i.e. through GATE and through AP PGECET. To get admission, you need to have a valid GATE score or you need to score a valid rank in AP PGECET. Soon, Andhra University will release the notification for AP PGECET. Here are the tentative dates.     Ans. Many GATE toppers leave PSU and join NITIE, instead of IITs because it offers better placements. Usually, students with good scores join  ONGC, NTPC, BHEL, IOCL, and others.     Ans. Here are some strategies that can help you prepare for GATE and ESE simultaneously. Compare the syllabus of GATE and ESE. Go through the previous years' questions of both. The technical portion of both examinations overlaps a lot. The major difference is question patterns and styles. Different types of questions are asked on the same topics. GATE tests aptitude for solving technical questions. While ESE puts more emphasis on technical details.  Figure out which subjects contribute more to which examinations.  If you have less time, start with GATE preparation. The topics can be covered easily and in less time. Once you are through GATE preparation, you can solve ESE questions without much difficulty.  Focus on GATE and ESE preparations only.  First, go through the syllabus thoroughly. Once you are done with the syllabus, go through your notes and solve previous years' questions. Solve test series, and review hard questions.     Ans. GATE consists mostly of numerical questions. It tests the aptitude for solving questions in less time. BITS HD papers have 10-15 numerical questions usually. The numerical questions aren’t on the same level as GATE and are just formula-based problems. Usually, around 80-90% of BITS HD questions are theory oriented. You need to have a good grasp of your engineering subjects to score well in BITS HD. The questions can come from anywhere in the syllabus. The required GATE rank depends upon various parameters like  The engineering branch Company (PSU)  Number of vacancies for the stream People who are graduating in 3-4 years are lucky as both IOCL and ONGC are planning to recruit in bulk because of massive retirements in both the companies. The mechanical and chemical branches are expected to have the most vacancies. Candidates will be called in a 1:5 ratio and thus, interviews will be the major determining factor of your selection. If you are unable to showcase your knowledge and talent during the interview, even a single-digit rank cannot guarantee your admission. A minimum of 40% marks are required to pass the interview.     Ans. It depends on your career goals. GATE offers more options for engineering students. It is an all-around examination. You can go for MTech, PSUs, MS, and FRM. If you want more options, GATE will be better for you.  If you want to do an MBA, after graduation, CAT will be the better option. Almost all top B-Schools accept CAT scores for MBA.  Read more

    Ans. IIT Roorkee admission 2023 hasn’t been wrapped up yet, hence its GATE cutoff too hasn’t been released as of now. M.Tech admission process of IIT Roorkee is conducted on the basis of the GATE cutoff, and all the candidates applying for admission into the M.Tech course under the non-sponsored category will be required to clear the cutoff for admission.  The cutoff scores for M.Tech admission at IIT Roorkee for 2022 and 2021 have not been disclosed by the admission authority.     Ans. First of all, admission to the IIT Roorkee MTech program is not given on the basis of GATE rank.
