IOCL Recruitment through GATE 2020 Exam

IOCL or Indian Oil has invited graduate engineers for recruitment as Engineers or Officers (quality control) through GATE exam. Shortlisting of candidates for further selection process (GD/GT or PI) will be based on scores secured in GATE 2020.

Latest:  GATE 2020 Admit Card  will be available to download from January 3, 2020. The exam is scheduled on Feb 1, 2, 8, and 9, 2020.

IOCL Recruitment Eligibility Criteria

The required educational qualification criteria for IOCL recruitment through GATE 2020 are following:

  • Candidate must be an Indian Citizen.
  • A graduate degree in Chemical Engineering/ Civil Engineering/ Computer Science and Information Technology/ Electrical Engineering/ Electronics and Communications Engineering/ Instrumentation Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.

Eligibility for Chemical and Polymer Science and Engineering

  • Candidates having BE/B.Tech or equivalent qualifications in Chemical Engineering/Polymer Science and Engineering /Petro-Chemical Engineering/ Plastic Technology may be considered for the vacancies in Chemical Engineering.
  • However, candidates with BE/B.Tech equivalent qualifications in Chemical Engineering/Polymer Science Engineering/Technology, who are desirous to be considered only for the vacancies under Polymer Science and Engineering must appear under Engineering Sciences [Polymer Science and Engineering section (code F)]. They are to follow the GATE structure as under:
Should have secured minimum 65% of marks in qualifying degree examination (relaxation of 55% for SC/ ST /PWD category).
Section A: Engineering Mathematics, General Aptitude, Polymer Science and Engineering (Paper Code F) (Mandatory)

IOCL - Concessions/ Relaxations

  1. Reservation of posts for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/ PwBD (degree of disability 40% or above) will be maintained as per Government of India directives.
  2. For getting the benefits of reservation under OBC category:
    • The name of caste and community of the candidate must appear in the ‘Central list of Other Backward Classes’
    • The candidates must not belong to creamy layer.
    • The candidates need to furnish their OBC certificate as per the format prescribed by Government of India and it must not be more than 6 months old.
  3. Minimum percentage of marks in the qualifying degree examination is relaxed to 55% for SC/ST/PwBD category candidates.
  4. Relaxation in Upper Age Limit as under will be extended as per Presidential Directives:

Candidates domiciled in J&K between 1.1.1980 – 31.12.1989 5 years

IOCL Job Profile

Candidates who are selected as engineers may be posted in any one of the divisions of Indian Oil such as Refineries, Marketing, Pipelines and Business Development, Information Systems, Optimization or In Subsidiary/Joint Venture Companies.

Marketing Aviation services, Engineering, Operations, Maintenance and Inspection, Sales and Marketing, Technical Services, Quality Control, etc.
Pipelines Operations and maintenance, constructions, projects, etc.
Business Development Petrochemicals, polymer projects, operations, sales and marketing, gas, renewable energy and sustainable development.

Petroleum engineers will be posted in the Exploration and Production Business Vertical of Business Development Division. They will supervise drilling operations and prepare to drill engineering designs, calculations and drilling programs for the blocks operated by Indian Oil.

Salary Band

Candidates selected as Engineers/Officers will be receiving a monthly remuneration of INR 60000. Also, the selected candidates will get DA and other allowances as per the rules of the Corporation in force, as amended from time to time.

  • Other Allowances or Benefits would include HRA/Subsidized Housing Accommodation (depending upon the place of posting), medical facilities, performance related pay, gratuity, contributory provident fund, employees’ pension scheme, group personal accident insurance scheme, leave encashment, LTC, contributory superannuation benefit fund scheme, conveyance advance, performance related incentives, etc.
  • The Cost to Company  (CTC) will be around INR 17.00 lakhs per annum inclusive of Performance Related Pay.
  • The Actual CTC will vary, depending on the place of posting, financial performance of the Corporation and also individual performance of the employee.

How to Apply?

To apply for IOCL through GATE, candidates must follow the two-stage process:

Stage 1: Online Registration for GATE 2020 examination

  • Apply/register online for GATE 2020 using GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS) before the last date i.e. October 1.
  • GATE 2020 will be online examination and will be held in the month of February 2020. Check GATE Exam Pattern

Stage 2: Online Application in Indian Oil with GATE Registration No.

  • Go to the official website of IOCL i.e. www.iocl.com
  • Click on the CAREERS option and open the GATE 2020 link.
  • Click on Apply online and a frame will appear on the screen. Enter the required details like Discipline, GATE registration no. and DOB.
  • Fill up the personal, qualification details, thereafter, upload the scanned copy of recent photograph and signature.
  • Click on the submit button, a unique ID will generate along with the application form.

IOCL Selection Process

The selection methodology for Officers/Engineers/GAEs/Research Officers in R&D Centre and Assistant Officers (Quality Control) in Marketing Division will comprise of the following:

  1. Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineers (GATE) 2020 score of the candidates in the concerned disciplines. Graduate Engineers from the relevant disciplines, desirous of taking up a career with IndianOil are required to appear in GATE-2020 in the same discipline.
  2. The GATE scores of the current session i.e. 2020 session will be valid for the recruitment exercise in Indian Oil under this advertisement. Score from GATE 2018 or from any previous GATE examination is not valid.
  3. On the basis of GATE 2020 score, the candidates will be shortlisted for further selection process comprising of:
    1. Group Discussion (GD)/Group Task (GT)
    2. Personal Interview (PI) for assessment of different facets of knowledge, skills etc.
  • Candidates have to essentially qualify in the exam. In addition, candidates will have to separately qualify in Group Discussion (GD)/Group Task (GT) and Personal Interview (PI) successfully before being adjudged as suitable for selection.
  • Final merit will be prepared based on GATE scores and further scores obtained by the candidates in GD/GT and PI. Merit would be prepared discipline- wise.

GATE IOCL Recruitment FAQs

Ques. How will Indian Oil use GATE scores?

Ans. Indian Oil will shortlist the candidates who have applied for the given post, using GATE score. Indian Oil will get scores from the Office of Chairman, GATE 2020. However, the scores of only GATE qualified candidates will be given to the Indian Oil. Therefore, candidates, not qualifying through GATE, shall not be shortlisted for GD/GT and PI. Candidates, who have appeared in GATE 2020 in the required disciplines and also applied in Indian Oil, would be considered for further selection process in Indian Oil.

Ques. Does one have to pay separate application fees to Indian Oil?

Ans. NO, there is no separate application fee to be given to Indian Oil. A candidate is required to pay the required fees for GATE only. Details concerning GATE fees are given on the GATE website.

Ques. After submission of the online application, can it be viewed again?

Ans. YES, it can be viewed again, but no change can be made to the details once filled in.

Ques. Where the University does not give % and only gives letter grades/CGPA/OGPA, how to fill in the % of marks in the online application?

Ans. The grade or CGPA should be converted into % as per conversion formula applied by the Institute/University for awarding class or division. In case, such a formula is not available, Indian Oil will have full authority to convert that into % by applying its own procedure, as it may consider appropriate.

Ques. Who is entitled to relaxation/concessions admissible to People with Disabilities candidates?

Ans. Persons with Disability of 40% or more will get the benefits admissible to PWD candidates. Also, it is mandatory that such a candidate holds a valid disability certificate issued by the medical board constituted for such purpose. Candidates, whose degree of disability is less than 40%, are not entitled to any concession admissible to PWD candidates.

Ques. Where should a candidate mail his/her complete application form with affixed photograph?

Ans. There is no need to mail the completed application after affixing photograph. This application is to be brought at the time of GD/GT and PI.

Ques. Is there any way to apply offline?

Ans. NO, Indian Oil shall not entertain any offline applications.

Ques. How can one communicate with Indian Oil, in the case of any specific query?

Ans. Indian Oil has a two-tier process for this. Firstly, call on the telephone numbers given on the online application module. Most of the queries will be addressed at this level only. For any further queries, candidate can write to recruit2020@indianoil.in

Ques. GATE conducts its exams in various disciplines. Will scores from all the papers be considered by Indian Oil?

Ans. NO, Indian Oil will be considering GATE 2020 scores in given disciplines only. Please refer the details through Indian Oil website.

Ques. Can a student appear in GATE in Electronics and Communication discipline for recruitment in Indian Oil?

Ans. NO, a candidate with a degree in Electronics and Instrumentation discipline shall be considered for recruitment in Indian Oil only in the Instrumentation discipline. The discipline of engineering in which the candidate is graduating or has already graduated requires being the same for appearing GATE 2020 examination also. Candidates with a mismatch in disciplines will altogether be rejected.

Ques. Is a post graduate with Masters in Computer Applications (MCA) eligible for applying for the position of Officers/Engineers?

Ans. The qualification requirement for the position of Officers/Engineers is, 4 year full time BE/B.Tech from a recognized Indian University/Institute. Candidate with MCA does not meet the eligibility requirement for Graduate Engineers.

Ques. Is a candidate required to appear again in GATE this year, even if he/she had already appeared in last year’s GATE?

Ans. YES, GATE 2020 score is the only valid score to be considered for recruitment in Indian

Ques. Is there any physical fitness criterion for appearing in GATE?

Ans. NO, GATE does not have any physical fitness criteria, but Indian Oil has.The candidates wishing to appear GATE for recruitment in Indian Oil only must go through the pre-employment medical fitness standard of Indian Oil before proceeding with the GATE application process.
