GATE Syllabus for Mining Engineering (MN), Preparation Tips and Books

Mining engineering is an engineering discipline that applies science and technology to the extraction of minerals from the earth. It is one of the 25 papers of GATE. GATE Mining Engineering Syllabus is divided into 6 sections. 

The syllabus is based on the topics studied at graduation level. It consists of three sections, viz General Aptitude, Engineering Mathematics, and subject questions. There will be total 65 multiple-choice questions and completed in 3 hours. Candidates can go through GATE syllabus for mining engineering further in this article.  Check GATE Exam Pattern

Exam Pattern of MN

GATE Mining Engineering Exam Pattern

Candidates must go through the exam pattern and the marking scheme before preparing for the exam. 

  • Mode of Examination: Online
  • Duration of the exam is 3 hours.
  • There will be 2 types of questions in GATE - MCQs and NATs.
  • There will be three sections in the exam – General Aptitude, Mathematics and Subject- wise
  • The total no. of questions in the exam will be 65. 
  • Total Marks of 100
Sectional Weightage
General Aptitude 15% of the total marks
Engineering Mathematics 15% of the total marks
MN – Subject-Based 70% of the total marks

Marking Scheme:

Sample Questions of GATE Mining Engineering

  • Sample Question 1: A flat longwall panel is mined out at an area having subsidence factor a. The measured maximum subsidence on the surface is S for a mining height of m. The subsidence is subcritical if ________?
  • Sample Question 2: A low-grade deep-seated ore body dipping at 70° has a strike length of 2 km, and width of 100 m. The ore body and wall rocks are weak and fractured. The preferred method of mining is _________?
  • Sample Question 3: In a slake durability test, mass of the drum with samples before the test and mass of the drum with oven-dried samples after the test are 1.52 kg and 1.48 kg respectively. If the mass of the drum is 1.05 kg, slake durability index in percentage (rounded off to two decimal places) is _________?

How to Prepare for MN Paper?

Preparation Tips for Mining Engineering Paper

1. Prepare Topic Wise

  • Candidates are advised to prepare topic wise.
  • Do not start 2 topics at one time. First, try to finish one topic then move for the next topic.
  • Candidates should not leave any topic for the end days. 
  • Each topic should be completely done by the candidates one week before the exam. 
  • Last week should be dedicated to revisions.

2. Mock Test

  • Take the help of mock tests to check your preparation level.
  • You can also practice previous papers or model papers.
  • This way you can increase your accuracy and speed.
  • You can also get an idea about the type and difficulty level of questions.

3. Time Management

  • Time management is a very crucial factor during preparations.
  • Those who will strictly follow the time table will be able to complete their syllabus in time.
  • 6-8 hours of time is required daily for preparation. 
  • Candidates can take breaks after 2-3 hours.
  • 1-2 hours of time should be dedicated to revisions only.

4. Use to Best Study Material

  • Refer the best books while preparing for the exam. Candidates are advised to consider the graduation level books.
  • Take help from UG notes to clear your basics.
  • Watch video lectures for better understanding.
  • Go through the syllabus and exam pattern again and again so that you won't miss any important points.
