GATE is a National qualifying exam for pursuing M.Tech. The exam started in 1984 and is organised by IITs and IISc on a rotational basis. IIT Delhi is the conducting authority for GATE 2020. Around 2 lakhs 61 thousand applicants have applied for the exam. GATE Result is usually declared after one month of exam.

The opportunities and scope after clearing the exam have increased many folds with years. The Government offers many types of fellowships to GATE qualifiers. The score is also used by various PSUs(Public Sector Undertakings) for recruitment. Read About PSUs Recruitment through GATE.

This year, GATE 2020 is scheduled for February 01, 02, 08 and 09, 2020 in online mode. The application process for GATE 2020 is closed now. The aspirant who successfully registers themselves can download the GATE Admit Card from January 03, 2020. The exam consists of 65 questions to be solved within 3 hours.

Admissions to Post Graduate Programmes

A candidate can use GATE Score 2020 for two purposes depending upon his/her score and his/her interest. He/she can either go for admission in various postgraduate programs(M.Tech, M.Engineering, Ph.D.) in top IITs and NITs with financial support of MHRD and other Government agencies or He/she can apply for job in various Public Sector Undertaking or better known as PSUs (ONGC, BPCL, DMRC etc) for graduate engineers .

• Masters of Technology (M.Tech)/ Master of Engineering(M.E.)/ Master of Science (M.S.)-  This is one of the most convention options of GATE qualified candidate, to go for further studies. Post graduation from IITs and few good NITs is actually a great option to get a deeper understanding of the subject. Almost every engineer and wannabe engineers dream about pursuing engineering from IITs and those who cannot crack IIT JEE, GATE is there “SECOND CHANCE”. Masters Degree from a well-known college/institution adds value to candidate’ education and benefit him/her in the long run.  It also gives the candidate more insight into the subjects, usually cause teachers or professors are better and Candidate is more exposed to applications than during his/her B.tech days. Few colleges in Singapore and Germany also consider candidate’s GATE score for admission to pursue M.S. if he/she has a decent GATE score.
• Opportunities for pursuing Ph.D./PGDM / PGDIE etc - A masters from a good college increases candidate’ chances of being selected for Ph.D. at an even better college, in India or abroad to pursue research in the world’s best universities with proper financial aid. Some Institutions offers integrated masters plus doctoral program, right after graduation based on GATE Score. Some colleges also offer techno-managerial courses to GATE qualified candidates.
• Some IIMs have a few seats for doctoral programs based on GATE score.
• There are few institutions which provide 1 year/2 years sponsored masters degree by various MNCs to the new candidates based on their GATE score and Interview, Aspirants later get placed in the same company.

Scholarships through GATE

Candidates obtaining a good GATE Score are entitled for many scholarships. Many institutes such as BARC offers offers stipend based courses. MHRD also provides scholarships to M.Tech pursuing candidates. Candidates can check below various types of scholarships offered to GATE Qualifiers:-

• Scholarships in Research Institutes- GATE Qualifiers are given Junior Research Fellowship(JRF) and Senior Research Fellowship(SRF) in CSIR laboratories. These are stipend based fellowships. Candidates are given stipend from 15,000-20,000.
• Stipend in BARC- Many reputed institutes such as BARC  offers stipend based courses to GATE Qualifiers. The stipend varies from 15,000 to 20,000.
• Scholarships for pursuing M.E./M.Tech- MHRD Government provides assistanceship of Rs 11,500 to GATE qualifiers who wants to pursue PG courses. 
• Library Funds- Candidates are given an allowance of Rs 5000 to facilitate ther needs of books/notes during the course periods. This allowance is offered by all the UGC/AICTE affiliated Universities.

GATE Score is used by many Public Sector Undertakings for recruitment. PSUs are Government owned companies partially behaving as private firms. The benefits of working in these firms are their salary packages, medical benefits and other aids.
