Question: Two cars, A and B, each traveled a distance of 200 miles. Did car A use more gasoline than car B?

(1) Cars A and B traveled the entire distance at the rates of 63 miles per hour and 49 miles per hour, respectively.
(2) For the entire distance, car A traveled 32 miles per gallon of gasoline and car B traveled 27 miles per gallon of gasoline.

  1. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
  2. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
  3. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient.
  4. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
  5. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are not sufficient.

Correct Answer: B
Solution and Explanation:

Approach Solution 1:
(1) 1 provides us the speed. We have the distance and the speed. Therefore we can calculate the time. However the questions asks did car A use more gasoline than car B. Therefore 1 is insufficient
(2) 2 provides us the miles per gasoline. Therefore we can calculate car A and car B gasoline and determine whether car A used more gasoline than car B. Sufficient.

Approach Solution 2:
(1) mileage efficiency not known....insuff
(2) fuel used by A =200/32 gallon
fuel used by B =200/27 gallon
Thus A>B
