Question: The Sun is approximately 1,400 million kilometers from the planet Saturn, and light from the Sun travels to Saturn at the rate of approximately 300,000 kilometers per second. Approximately how many minutes does it take for light to travel from the Sun to Saturn?

A) 80
B) 130
C) 160
D) 280
E) 360

Correct Answer: A
Solution and Explanation:
Approach Solution 1:

The distance from the sun to the planet Saturn is 1400 million kilometers or 1400*1000000 km.

We know that light travels from the Sun at a rate of 300000 km/s or 300000*60 = 18*1000000 km/minute

Time= Distance/Speed= 1400∗1000000/18∗1000000=77.8

Therefore, it takes approximately 80 minutes for light to travel from the Sun to planet Saturn.

Approach Solution 2:
Given:

  • The sun is approximately 1,400 million km from Saturn
  • Light travels to Saturn at the rate of approximately 300,000 km/sec

To find:

  • Approximately how many minutes does it take for light to travel from the Sun to Saturn

In this question, the distance between the Sun and Saturn is provided, along with the speed of light

Therefore, the time taken= distance/speed= 14∗10^8/3∗10^5 sec= 14∗1000/3∗60 minutes= 77 minutes approx
Hence, the correct answer is option A, as it is the closest option.

Approach Solution 3:
Since 1 million = 10^6, we can re-express the distance from the Sun to Saturn as 1,400 x 10^6 kilometres. We can also express the light’s rate as 3 x 10^5. The time to travel from the Sun to Saturn, in seconds, is:

(1,400 x 10^6)/(3 x 10^5) = (1,400/3) x 10^1 sec = 14,000/3

In minutes, that is (14,000/3)/60 = 14,000/180 = 1400/18 = 700/9 ≈77.(closest to 80)
