Question: The first five numbers in a regular sequence are 4, 10, 22, 46, and 94. What is the next number in the sequence?

  1. 142
  2. 154
  3. 176
  4. 182
  5. 190

Correct Answer: E

Approach Solution (1):

When we see the sequence 4, 10, 22, 46, ad 94. We see that each succeeding number is some value more than twice the previous number:

10 = 2 * 4 + 2

22 = 2 * 10 + 2

And so on

So, next number = 2 * 94 + 2 = 190

Approach Solution (2):

We noticed the following pattern:

10 = 4 + x … x = 6

22 = 10 + x … x = 12

46 = 22 + x … x = 24

94 = 46 + x … x = 48

We observed that X is doubled each time

So, 48 * 2 + 94 = 190
