Reading Passage Question
The earth formed 4.5 billion years ago. Evolutionary biologists believe that single-celled prokaryotic life (cells without a cell nucleus) appeared on earth less than one billion years after that. What’s remarkable about this date is that geophysicists believe this was the earliest point at which the planet had cooled enough to sustain life. In other words, life appeared almost the instant (in geological time) that it was possible. For unknown reasons, it took more than another billion years for Eukaryotic life (cells with nuclei) to appear, another billion years for multicellular life to evolve from eukaryotic cells, and another billion years for humans to appear — which we did less than a million years ago. The processes that lead to multicellular life all took place in the earth’s oceans.

Solution and Explanation

  1. Which of the following statements would the author of the passage be most likely to agree with?

(A) The reasons why Eukaryotic life took so long to appear will never be known to us.
(B) Humans took longer to develop because we are so complex.
(C) The ocean was vitally important to the development of multicellular life.
(D) Multi-cellular life cannot be studied with the complexity it deserves.
(E) The Earth took 4.5 billion years to form.

Answer: C
Explanation: The main theme of the short passage is all about the evolution of the earth. The first passage is about the reasons the eukaryotic life took so long to appear and will never be known to us. It is completely wrong according to the passage and the other one which says Humans took longer to develop because we are so complex is also a false statement. The third one that the ocean was vitally important for developing multicellular life is the correct option mentioned at the end of the passage. The earth took 4-5 billion years up to now but not to form hence the following statement is also false as far as the scope of the passage is concerned.

  1. Which of the following statements most accurately captures the main point of the passage?

(A) It has been a long and winding road to the development of multicellular life.
(B) The development of multicellular life took an inconceivably long time.
(C) Since the earth’s formation 4.5 billion years ago, the development of life has been a complex process.
(D) No one knows when multicellular life developed.
(E) It is startling to realize how quickly life began to develop after the earth’s crust cooled.

Answer: C
Explanation: The main point of the passage is the evolution of the earth in a very different way. earth formation nearly 4.5 billion years. It has been a long and winding road to the development of multicellular life is not the exact meaning of the passage and the next option that The development of multicellular life took an inconceivably long time is not the correct choice and the next one which mentions the passage that the formation of the 4.5 years for the development of the life which is a very complex process. The fourth one which says It is startling to realize how quickly life began to develop after the earth’s crust cooled is also not the direct one from the passage.

  1. According to the passage, cells without a cell nucleus are called which of the following?

(A) Multicellular life forms
(B) Human beings
(C) Eukaryotic life
(D) Cells without a cell nucleus
(E) Prokaryotic cells

Answer: E
Explanation: In the passage, the eukaryotic cells were denoted as the cells with nuclei and the opposite one for the eukaryotic were the prokaryotic cells hence they were generally the cells without the nuclei. Hence the statement states that the cells took more than another billion years for Eukaryotic life (cells with nuclei) to appear, another billion years for multicellular life to evolve from eukaryotic cells, and another billion years for humans to appear. This mentions that the time taken for the prokaryotic and the eukaryotic were mentioned clearly in the passage.

  1. Which of the following best explains the author’s tone in the passage?

(A) Hostile, probing
(B) Disbelief, incredulity
(C) Worshipful, hagiographic
(D) Intrigued, informative
(E) Reductive, dismissive

Answer: D
Explanation: The opening of the passage is The earth formed 4.5 billion years ago is very informative and gives the statistics of the formation of the earth and the life present on the earth. The second statement is that Evolutionary biologists believe that single-celled prokaryotic life (cells without a cell nucleus) appeared on earth less than one billion years after that is the very next statement accompanying the passage which appears intrigued and the combination of both of these statements can be taken as the best choice amongst the options given below.

  1. According to the passage, how long did it take for humans to appear after cells with nuclei existed?

(A) 2 billion years
(B) 1 billion years
(C) 3 billion years
(D) 1 million years
(E) 4 billion years

Answer: A
Explanation: The formation of eukaryotic life was mentioned to take a maximum of 1 billion years and the formation of the prokaryotes will take at least another billon years hence the formation of humans on the earth is expected to take 2 billion years and the option given A is the correct choice.

  1. Which of the following statements can be reasonably inferred, based on the highlighted sentence?

(A) Life began at the earliest point at which the planet had cooled enough to sustain it.
(B) The planet cooled extremely rapidly.
(C) Life did not have to begin at the moment it was sustainable.
(D) Life needs to be studied in more depth to understand its origins.
(E) Life as we know it could exist on other planets.

Answer: C
Explanation: From the passage, the statement that mentions the geophysicists believed that Life did not have to begin at the moment it was sustainable was that life appeared on earth only after the formation of all the sustainable conditions for each living being to survive. Hence Life did not have to begin at the moment it was sustainable is the correct statement.
