Correct Answer: B
Solution and Explanation:
Approach Solution 1:

Given

In this question, we are given that

  • In a country 55.55 % of the population are males and rest females
  • Of the males 60 % are literate and of the females 40 % are literate

We need to determine the percentage of the population that are literate
Let us assume that the total population of the country is 90.

  • Hence, male population= 55.55% of 90= 50
  • And, female population= 90–50= 40

Also, 60% of the males and 40% of the females are literate

  • Hence, literate male= 60% of 50= 30
  • And, literate female= 40% of 40= 16
  • Therefore, total literate population= 30 + 16= 46
  • Thus, percentage of literate population= (46/90)*100= 51.11%

Approach Solution 2:

Let’s assume 10,000 population
5,555 males
4,445 Females
5,555 * .6= 3333
4445*.4= 1778
3333+1778= 5111
5,111/10,000= 51%

Approach Solution 3:

55.55%= 0.5555
1 -0.5555= 0.4555
0.5555*0.6= 0.3333
0.4555*0.4= 0.1822
0.3333 + 0.1822 = 0.5155

51.55% of the population is literate.
