Question: Company XYZ had $498.2 million in profits for the year. The sales department brought in $302.6 million of the profits. Approximately what percent of the profits were not brought in by the sales department?

  1. 4%
  2. 6%
  3. 25%
  4. 40%
  5. 60%

Correct Answer: D
Solution and Explanation:
Approach Solution 1:

$498.2 is approximately $500 million dollars in profits.

$302.6 is approximately $300 million dollars brought in by sales.

Non sales profits = 500 - 300 = $200 million

% of total profits brought in by non sales = 200/500∗100=40%

Approach Solution 2:
Profit not brought by sales department =498.2-302.6= 195.6

% profit not brought by sale= (195.6/498.2)*100
= approx (200/500)*100
= 40%
