Question: A water tank has three taps A, B, and C. A fills four buckets in 24 minutes, B fills 8 buckets in an hour, and C fills two buckets in 20 minutes. If all the taps are opened together a full tank is emptied in 2 hours. If a bucket can hold 5 liters of water, what is the capacity of the tank?

  1. 60 litres
  2. 120 litres
  3. 180 litres
  4. 240 litres
  5. 360 litres

Correct Answer: D
Solution and Explanation:
Approach Solution 1:

A will empty four buckets, each holding 20 liters, in 24 minutes, or 120 minutes total.
Eight buckets, or 40 liters, are filled by B. In an hour, 60 minutes, or 120 minutes, B will drain 80 liters.
A will empty 60 liters after C fills two buckets with 10 liters in 20 minutes or 120 minutes.
Together, A, B, and C will have an empty quantity of 100 + 80+60 = 240 liters.
e.g., Tank Capacity = 240 Liters

D is the correct answer.

Approach Solution 2:

Each bucket holds a volume of 5L.

Tap A
A fills four buckets in 24 minutes.
As a result, A will fill 10 buckets in 60 minutes using the formula 60424
As a result, we fill 20 buckets in two hours.
100 liters of water were drained by tap A, or 20 x 5.

Tap B,
B fills 8 buckets in an hour.
As a result, B fills 16 buckets in 2 hours.
80 litres of water were drained via tap B, or 16 * 5.

Tap C,
C fills two buckets in 20 minutes.
Therefore, C fills 12 buckets in 2 hours.
Water drained from the tap: C = 12 * 5 = 60 liters.

The total amount of water drained from all three taps equals the tank's capacity: 100 + 80+60 = 240 liters.

Approach Solution 3:

Four buckets are filled in 24 minutes by A, eight in an hour by B, and two in 20 minutes by C.
Taking the sum of the aforementioned times: 120 min.

A fills 20 buckets in 120 minutes (120 / 24 * 4).
B fills 16 buckets in 120 minutes, or 120 / 60 * 8.
C fills 12 buckets in 120 minutes by doing 120 / 20 * 2.

=> A, B, and C fill 48 buckets in 120 minutes.
Together, the trio empties a full tank in two hours.

As a result, the full tank's capacity is equal to 48 buckets (48 x 5 = 240 liters).
