Question: A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio of 4:3 respectively. If 6 L of water is added to this mixture, the respective ratio of milk and water becomes 8:7. What is the quantity of milk in the original mixture?

  1. 96 L
  2. 48 L
  3. 40 L
  4. 35 L
  5. 30 L

Answer:
Approach Solution (1):

4x + 3x = 7x
\({4x\over{3x+6}}={8\over7}\)
\(4x=48{\rightarrow}x=12\)
4*12 = 48 L of milk and 36 of water in original mixture
Correct option: B

Approach Solution (2):
Given that ratio of milk / water is\(4\over3\)
We can assume original quantity as\({4x\over3x}---(1)\)
Now it is given that post addition of 6 L water new ratio will become\(8\over7\)
Hence,\(={4x\over{3x+6}}={8\over7}\)
On solving this equation, we get: x = 12
Hence from equation 1, we can get original quantity of milk as 4 * 12 = 48 L
Correct option: B

Approach Solution (3):
Let the quantity of milk and water in initial mixture be 4x and 3x litres
Quantity of water = 3x litres
On adding 6 litres of water, we get:
\(={4x\over{3x+6}}={8\over7}\)
4x = 48
x = 12
Now required quantity of milk = 4x = 48 litres
Correct option: B
