Question: A metallic sheet is of rectangular shape with dimensions 48 m x 36 m. From each of its corners, a square is cut off so as to make an open box. If the length of the square is 8 m, the volume of the box (in m cube) is:

A)4120 m cube
B)4140 m cube
C)5140 m cube
D)5120 m cube

Correct Answer: D

Solution and Explanation:

Approach Solution 1:

Since , a square of 8 is cut off from the corners. So, the open box becomes a cuboid of length (48 - 2*8) and breadth (36- 2*8) and height 8
length= 32 m, breadth= 16 m and height= 8 m, Therefore Volume of cuboid= l*b*h= 32*16*8= 5120m cube.

Approach Solution 2:

Volume of box= l*b*h
From the diagram
1=48-2(8)
Since two square formed side
= 32 m
b= 36-2(8)
= 20 m
Also h= 8m
Therefore, volume= 32*20*8
= 5120 m^3

Approach Solution 3:
8m square is cut off from each corner, then the length = 48-8-8 = 32m
Breadth= 36-8-8= 20m
Height= 8m
Area= 8*20*32z
= 5120
