let the average of 16 matches be x.
16x + 87 = Total of 17 matches.
On the other hand, (x+3)17 is also the total of 17 matches.
16x + 87 = ( x + 3) 17
16x + 87 = 17x + 51
x = 36.

Now we are looking for the average after 17 matches.
36 + 3 = 39.
