In December 2010, the Gazette of India published by the Medical Council of India (MCI) spoke about enhancing the methods for the admission of students who wish to pursue MBBS degrees. The “Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 2010” further called for the introduction of a single eligibility cum entrance exam for the admission to MBBS course, i.e., National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (full form of NEET).
It specified the qualifications and eligibility criteria to appear for this examination. The Supreme Court also approved the change brought out by MCI to hold a common entrance examination for MBBS and PG courses. It was announced on May 5, 2013, that the Government of India is conducting NEET for admission to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses.
However, on July 18, 2013, the Supreme Court of India canceled the examination due to 115 petitions filed against the exam by various states due to the difference in the syllabus proposed by MCI and the one followed by the respective state boards. The MCI was persistent in conducting this examination and ultimately won the case in 2016.
In 2016, NEET exam was conducted in two phases i.e., NEET-I and NEET-II. The pattern and syllabus were the same as that of the AIPMT 2015 examination.
