IIEST Shibpur offers integrated MTech for engineering streams. So, first, be clear if you want to pursue MTech from an institute that does not have a record of producing post-grads like IITs or other universities abroad.

Comparison:

In academics, there is not much difference between JU CS and BESU CS.

In fact in the present scenario, JU CS has better placement statisticsas compared to BESU CS.For this reason, sometimes BESU CS/IT graduates join IITs after the completion of their course and often end up in the same firms their fellow JU mates are working in for 2 years.

BESU got updated to the status of IIEST quite recently. It will take some time for the institute to improve its infrastructure and academics. Being an institute of national importance, the institute is attracting good facilities and campus recruits.

The bottom line is if you are sure that you want to pursue integrated MTech, IIEST CS is not a bad option. Be it JU or BESU, the institute does not matter that much. If you are hard-working, you will excel.

Alumni and rank-wise, IIEST Shibpur is better. It is India’s 2nd oldest technical institute. It attracts talented students from all over the country. You will be among a competitive peer group. The environment on campus is great for learning.  It has an extensive alumni network, tanks to more than 165 years of legacy.

As far as placement goes IIEST Shibpur and NIT Durgapur offer similar opportunities. Tech giants like Microsoft, and Directi visit IIEST Shibpur placement. PSUs like Coal India also hire from core departments of the institute. The average CTC offered to the students is around INR 6-7 LPA.

Due to the above factors, IIEST Shibpur has a little edge over NIT Durgapur. But both are premier institutes and offer decent academic and placement opportunities.

The cutoff scores for admission to the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, through JEE Main varies each year and depends on several factors, including the number of applicants, the difficulty level of the exam, and the availability of seats in each program.

However, based on previous year trends, to get admission to IIEST Shibpur, you would need to score a rank under 10,000 (approximately) in the JEE Main exam.

It's important to note that the cutoff score for each program offered at IIEST Shibpur is different, and you will need to check the official website of the institute for the specific cutoff score for the program you are interested in.

Additionally, meeting the cutoff score is only one of the eligibility criteria for admission to IIEST Shibpur. The institute considers other factors such as the candidate's academic performance, the number of applicants for a program, and the reservation policies, among others, for final admission decisions.

It’s been a few months since my brother graduated, and I think I can answer this question. Here are the few pros and cons of IIEST Shibpur.

Cons:

  • IIEST Shibpur is not that well-known among common people as compared to NITs and IITs. Most people don’t understand the brand value of the institute.
  • Even if someone is aware of the institute, most are quite skeptical about its placements. As placement is one of the common factors for judging an institute. Whereas, most students of IIEST are interested in higher studies.
  • IIEST Shibpur became an Institute of National Importance quite recently, so it will need time to improve the infrastructure.

Pros:

  • IIEST has a vast alumni network employed in higher ranks of reputed MNCs. You will have the advantage of that network.
  • The academics are great and other than NIT Trichy the education quality is better than most of the NITs.
  • Most students of IIEST choose to go for MTech at IITs or IISc Bangalore. Some even go for MS abroad. The faculties at IIEST are quite reputed and their LOR will definitely help you in getting admission for MS at international institutes.
  • Even if you are not interested in pursuing higher studies or research you can get a decent placement offer from the institute if you work hard. Many reputed companies visit the campus placement. Some of the major recruiters at the institute are Microsoft, Google, Hyundai, Hindusthan Uniliver, L&T, etc.

Many students choose NITs because of the NIT tag but compared to most NITs IIEST is far better. You will definitely not regret choosing the institute.

  • Professor Manas Hira, Professor Amit Kumar Das, Professor Biplab Kumar Sikdar, Professor Abhik Mukherjee, Professor Arindam Biswas are some of the best professors you will meet in IIEST.
  • Apart from them, Mathematics Department Professor Murari Mitra is good. He has a good grip on the Probability subject.
  • In the Electrical Department, Professor Sri Kumar Mallik, Professor and Mainak Sengupta are good.
  • In the Electronics Department, Professor Tamaghna Acharya has good teaching skills.

Therefore, the IIEST has many good professors other than these. They are all professional and skilled in their respective subjects and you will learn a lot from them.

One of my friends is a final-year student at IIEST Shibpur. According to him, the placement last year has been great. Microsoft IDC (PPO), Mentor Graphics, CESC Ltd (PPO), Tata Steel (PPO), Bentley Systems completed their recruitment process on campus and hired more candidates than they did last year. Companies like Atlassian, Samsung R&D, and PwC are also expected to recruit on campus. A brief discussion about placements and other aspects of the institute are as follows.

Placements:

  • Pre-final year students got internship offers from various firms like Microsoft R&D, Deutsche Bank, Wells Fargo, and Texas Instruments this year. Other firms which will be having on-campus recruitment will most likely be hiring interns also. Hence, needless to mention that the placement scenario has continued its trend of improvement this year as well.
  • Students have been hired in companies like Microsoft IDC, Cognizant, Samsung R&D, Infosys, TCS Research and Innovation, Z. S. Associates, etc. from campus placements. Off-campus placements also include Google (Bangalore).
  • The median salary that has been offered is around 7 LPA and every one of the scholars participating in placements got placed. The placement cell improved and has become more proactive and efficient in training and placement of scholars.

Infrastructure:

  • All departments, libraries and hostels are Wi-Fi enabled with decent speeds. The Science and Technology Department features a 1Gigabit backbone network.
  • The rooms and labs are well maintained and have all the specified equipment. The central library is not extremely big but features a good assortment of useful titles. There are smaller departmental libraries also.
  • The hostels are decent and clean but might be improved. They need indoor game facilities also. A replacement hostel for women has just been built and features a far better review.
  • There are multiple canteens on Campus serving good quality food at reasonable rates and a CCD stall with significantly cheaper rates than usual.
  • Other amenities include Gymnasium, Sports fields, Court and Infirmary.

Faculty:

  • The college consists of highly qualified and knowledgeable teachers. They clear the doubts if consulted. Most teachers teach using both chalkboard and multimedia aids.
  • There are multiple teachers and other lab assistants to guide the students during the lab classes.
  • The course curriculum is aligned with most other national institutions and contains the essential topics necessary for the course.

The campus is lush green and located on the bank of the river Ganges. Right beside the institute is Botanical Gardens. Many events take place at the institute all year around. There are annual Techno-Management fest Instruo, Annual Cultural fests Rebecca and Anuranan, and departmental fests. Besides that, there are also sports events. Meritorious students can avail scholarships sponsored by the Alumni Association.

One of my friends missed IIT by a few marks and that left him devastated. Nonetheless, his experience at the institute was quite good. Here are some snippets from his duration at the institute.

After a few months at the institute, he made some great friends and he started enjoying college life. After 1 academic year, he started working in events, attended some workshops, got sponsors for tech fest, learned so much about so many different things. That gave him the courage to support his friend's plan for a TEDx event at the college. He's one of the guys who started a TEDx legacy in this 160-year-old Institution of Higher Learning.

One of the reasons why he chose to stay at the institute as a junior, is the vast alumni network. Every corner of the globe IIEST is the one to hold top managerial positions in various industries. The college got a donation of over 350 crores for a research Hospital by an alumnus. It’s true once IIEST was amongst the best 5 in our country until politics in West Bengal destroyed their legacy.

IIEST has the zeal to keep the Bengal Engineering College at the top. NIRF-MHRD 2020 ranked IIEST Shibpur 21, but visit the college and witness why the students who pass out from this Institute somehow end up being the best in their fields.

IIEST Shibpur is located in Howrah on the banks of the Hooghly river. Transportation is very easy, you can choose to travel by flights, trains or busses.

How to reach IIEST Shibpur:

  1. Flight: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport is the nearest airport to IIEST. After landing there, you can take a taxi from the airport to reach IIEST.
  2. Train: There are two train stations, Sealdah Railway Station, and Howrah Railway Station. After arriving at either train station, you can take a bus from there to reach IIEST. You can take a minibus in red and yellow color from Howrah Railway Station.
  3. Bus: If you are thinking of arriving by bus you have to change buses to arrive at the IIEST. Usually, the bus route is not the favored one, you can take other means of transport to arrive at the destination.

Therefore, the route of IIEST is quite easy to reach. It is recommended, if you are asking any local about IIEST, then ask for B.E College instead of IIEST. The institute has two gates, if you are coming from the bus then get down to the first one and take a cab from there.
