Course Description

Jadavpur University was established in 1995 and is formerly known as Bengal technical Institute. The university offers various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate level programs in streams such as engineering, science, architecture, education, and social science. The university has announced the list of eligible candidates(in case of non-appearance of names in the previous selection list) for admission among the postgraduate programs on December 9, 2020.

Jadavpur university offers postgraduate programs in various areas. The university offers various ME programs with a duration of 2 years including 4 semesters. The university also provides some of the specific ME programs in evening mode which includes 3 years with 6 semesters.

The ME program is specialized in areas namely chemical engineering, civil, computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunication, Food tech and biochemical engineering, information technology, instrumentation and electronics, mechanical, metallurgical and material, production engineering, power engineering, printing engineering in various disciplines.

The minimum eligibility to get admission to the ME program is a graduate degree in the relevant discipline.

The selection of the candidates will be done based on the GATE score or internal test score and the under-graduation score.

Eligibility criteria:

Category A candidates: (GATE/GPAT)

The candidate must have passed the bachelor’s degree in Engg/tech with at least 60% passing marks for general category and 45% for SC/ST/PWD category students. The candidate must have passed the GATE/GMAT with valid results and can apply for the ME programs.

Category B candidates: (sponsored)

The candidate must have passed the bachelor’s degree in Engg/Tech/Arch/pharmacy or MSC/MCA with at least 60% passing marks for general category and 45% for SC/ST/PWD category students.

The candidate must have a minimum experience of 1 year after passing the undergraduate degree duly sponsored by the industry/institute. For PG in Computer Science and Engineering/ Civil Engineering/ Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering course, one must have a minimum of 2 (two) years of experience) duly sponsored by Industry / Institute/ Govt. Depts.

Category C: (Self-Sponsored)

The candidate must have passed the bachelor’s degree in Engg/tech with at least 60% passing marks for the general category and 45% for SC/ST/PWD/OBC category students. The candidate under this category can apply for only some of the programs listed on the official website.

Further, the additional eligibility criteria differ with various departments of engineering.

Admission Guidelines:

How to apply?

One has to Visit the official website of the Jadavpur university for getting the application form.
The candidate has to fill the application form mentioned on the website.
Mention all the details regarding academics, personal details, guardian details, contact details.
Attach the required scanned copies.
Then submit the application form.
Pay the application fee of INR 500/- using credit/ debit card or net banking in the SBI bank.
Download the application form and fee receipt for future purposes.

Marksheets and certificates of higher secondary examination and a bachelor's degree in relevant fields.
Category certificate (if required)

Ques. What are the minimum eligibility criteria that foreign students should have to get admission in the ME program?

Ans. The eligibility Criteria is as follows:

Nationality: A person must have a nationality of any country other than India and a valid passport for the entire duration of the course.
Academics: one must have a bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology with at least 80%
One should have a valid GRE score.
AGE criteria: the person should not be less than 21 years and more than 30 years.
One should have a valid score in the English language qualifying examination.

IIEST Shibpur offers integrated MTech for engineering streams. So, first, be clear if you want to pursue MTech from an institute that does not have a record of producing post-grads like IITs or other universities abroad. Comparison: In academics, there is not much difference between JU CS and BESU CS. In fact in the present scenario, JU CS has better placement statisticsas compared to BESU CS.For this reason, sometimes BESU CS/IT graduates join IITs after the completion of their course and often end up in the same firms their fellow JU mates are working in for 2 years. BESU got updated to the status of IIEST quite recently. It will take some time for the institute to improve its infrastructure and academics. Being an institute of national importance, the institute is attracting good facilities and campus recruits. The bottom line is if you are sure that you want to pursue integrated MTech, IIEST CS is not a bad option. Be it JU or BESU, the institute does not matter that much. If you are hard-working, you will excel.

Jadavpur University has managed to survive the recession to give its student a handsome placement package. My friend is currently studying there and their placement happens all around the years, unlike IITs where placement happens for two weeks or so. Like most engineering colleges, CSE as usual tops the placement with their highest packages. The most popular recruiters include Amazon, Microsoft, Adobe, Goldman Sachs, etc. Almost 100% of students are placed in all the branches. IEM Kolkata is a reputed technical college in the region. But given a choice, you should take Civil/IT at Jadavpur University. JU ranks among the top engineering colleges in the country. It is well ahead of IEM, in terms of placement and opportunities. Many core companies visit JU to recruit Civil Engineering students. The IT placement is excellent. Companies such as Microsoft, Google, etc. take part in Jadavpur University placements. During the 2022 placement drive, Facebook offered the highest CTC of INR 1.8 Crore per annum. The second highest CTC was INR 1.4 CPA, by Google.

As per the reports of last year, NIT Trichy is deemed better than Jadavpur University. Thus, you must not leave any chance to get into NIT Trichy. As per the NIRF 2020 ranking, NIT Trichy is ranked 9th for B.Tech. NIT Trichy has a stupendous entrepreneurial culture, with a broad alumni network spread across India and overseas. The alumni network is over 30,000, including CEOs of top firms listed in Fortune India 500 and Forbes Global 2000. Jadavpur University is ranked 17th for B.Tech by NIRF 2020. Going by the recent rankings and alumni networks it is safe to say that NIT Trichy is ahead of Jadavpur. However, you should do your own research and make a decision based on that.

Having some friends at Jadavpur University, I can list some problems that students usually face: As Jadavpur University is a regional university, it lacks the exposure what central institutes usually attract. For the same reason, the administration is a little lazy and students enjoy too much freedom. Most of the professors are quite qualified and experienced, you can find a lot of them who aren’t up to the mark. Here, it becomes quite difficult to compete with the level of IIT and NIT professors. Students at Jadavpur are not creative and do not think out of the box. They usually like to go with the flow and simply follow the syllabus for good placement. The placement scenario of the CSE department might be at a height but sometimes, other departments suffer and couldn't get as great opportunities. The UG research quality in JU is not up to the mark. Although many students indulge in research and projects, the publication quality is not at par. They just make some small change in an algorithm and produce two/three papers but are not recognized very kindly by foreign universities. All in all, JU needs improvements with the serious involvement of all the students, teachers, staff, alumni of JU. By tackling all the problem areas together, it can shine like IITs and NITs in the near future.

Jadavpur University is better than NIT Durgapur. In spite of being an NIT, NIT D fails to offer many basic facilities. The undergraduate laboratories are not well-maintained. The campus doesn’t have an active research interface for undergraduate degrees. Jadavpur University students receive way better learning resources and guidance for higher studies. Located at the heart of Kolkata, there is better availability of coaching for competitive examinations. It offers better placements as well. More than 100 recruiting companies took part in Jadavpur University placements of 2022. The highest CTC offered this year was INR 1.8 CPA. IIEST Shibpur has begun offering an integrated M.Tech for every engineering stream. So, first, it is best to decide whether or not you want to pursue your course at an institute that doesn’t have a long-standing record of producing postgraduates unlike IITs or other reputed engineering institutes. Now, from the academic point of view, there is no such difference between Jadavpur University (CSE) and BESU (CSE). However, the placement reports of Jadavpur University (CS) are currently higher than BESU (now, IIEST) CS. In the last placement drive, the highest CTC offered at JU was 42 LPA. This has been one substantial reason behind why students of IIEST prepare thoroughly for GATE and later opt for IITs. BESU, only recently, has seen a typical upgrade to the status of IIEST, but things still have not drastically altered. The infrastructure of the institute is still undergoing enhancements which still might take a few years from now. It can take a substantial amount of time to improve the academic overview of IIEST. In future, it will definitely attract major recruiters owing to its status as an institute with major national importance. It does not really make a difference which institute you are opting for, JU or IIEST. If you are dedicated, you can secure good opportunities from both of these two institutes.

Jadavpur University placements in 2021 concluded with an average CTC of INR 10.2 LPA. The highest CTC was INR 58 LPA. I have a few friends who have completed their B.tech from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad and Jadavpur University. Here are some crucial factors you must take into account to understand the difference. Legacy: IIT(ISM), Dhanbad is an IIT which is a central level engineering institute and also one of the oldest colleges in the country. On the other hand, JU still remains a state-level university. Infrastructure: If you have visited both campuses, you can clearly see that the infrastructure at JU is crumbling as compared to that of IIT(ISM). JU has a campus the size of IIT(ISM), Dhanbad's lower ground. Rankings: Although most rankings are biased and paid, JU is always ranked below IIT(ISM) Dhanbad except in the NIRF Rankings. Placement packages: The tougher JEE Advanced criteria ensures the quality of students IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. All branches perform quite well. For example - The highest salary offered in CSE in the year 2017 was 1.05 crore By no means a state-level university can outstand a national-level Institute. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has an edge over JU in almost all aspects. If you score well enough for IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, there’s no point in thinking about Jadavpur University.
