Is NIT Durgapur better than Jadavpur University?
Posted On - Sep 30, 2021No, in no way is NIT Durgapur better than Jadavpur University. NIT Durgapur's overall ranking by NIRF is 90 out of 200 colleges in India in 2023 while that of Jadavpur University is. JU is placed right after the 7 old IITs and Anna University. Whereas NIT Durgapur is not even in the top 50.
One of my friends got CSE in NIT Durgapur and Electrical Engineering in JU and he chose the latter despite his home being near NIT Durgapur. Here is a brief overview of both the institutes

So unless you are getting a decent branch into 7 IITs, it’s best to go for Jadavpur University.
Jadavpur University is better than NIT Durgapur. In spite of being an NIT, NIT D fails to offer many basic facilities. The undergraduate laboratories are not well-maintained. The campus doesn’t have an active research interface for undergraduate degrees.
Jadavpur University students receive way better learning resources and guidance for higher studies. Located at the heart of Kolkata, there is better availability of coaching for competitive examinations. It offers better placements as well. More than 100 recruiting companies took part in Jadavpur University placements of 2022. The highest CTC offered this year was INR 1.8 CPA. Industry giants such as Apple, Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc. took part in the placement drive.
NIT Durgapur and Jadavpur University are institutes based in West Bengal. According to the reviews I got online, they both are equally good institutions. But NIT Durgapur is preferred among them by the students.
The following are the reasons as to why:
- NIT Durgapur is ranked 29th in the NIRF Ranking for Engineering 2021 and 71st in the NIRF Ranking in Overall 2021.
- It is an institute of national importance. It was one of the first eight RECs established by the Indian government.
- The alumni base of the institute is strong. You may find at least one alumnus in every top company around the world.
- The institute has a well-established infrastructure, including hostels, guest houses, a game and sports complex, a bank, a canteen, a workshop, and more. It is subject to upgrade.
- Durgapur is a small green and clean city.

Several companies only hire students from National Institutes such as IITs, NITs, and IIITs. So, NIT Durgapur students will have an edge.
CERN in Switzerland, NUS in Singapore, MIT in the USA, and other renowned universities have signed research MOUs with NIT Durgapur. The institute sends students in their third year of BTech to such foreign universities for an internship.
As the filtered students clearing JEE Main cut-offs join the institute, there is diversity on campus. In conclusion, NIT Durgapur has more perks in the long-term perspective.
