Course Description

IIT Kharagpur MTech admissions are based on GATE Score followed by COAP counselling. The registrations for GATE 2024 are over and the admit card for the exam will be released on January 03, 2023. 

IIT Kharagpur offers an MTech program in 64 different specialisations for 2 years. For the year 2023, IIT Kharagpur is the coordinating institute for COAP. IIT Kharagpur has undertaken a total 10 rounds of COAP counselling 2023. 

IIT Kharagpur MTech admission 2024 is based on valid GATE scores and COAP counselling. However, candidates having IIT BTech degrees with a minimum 8.0 CGPA are free from taking the GATE exam. Besides this, IIT Kharagpur also grants admission to sponsored students with 2 years of working experience for its MTech program. To apply for the IIT Kharagpur MTech course, candidates must visit the institute’s official website only after qualifying the GATE examination.

IIT Kharagpur MTech Eligibility 

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture/M.Sc or equivalent professional degrees (AMIE etc.) with minimum aggregate marks of 60% (55% for SC/ST/PwD).
  • Final year students who are awaiting their results can also apply.
  • The students must have a valid score in GATE.

The candidates for MTech courses are selected based on either GATE Score only or GATE Score (70 % weightage) and a personal interview (30 % weightage) for some of the specializations. The personal interview is conducted at IIT Kharagpur only. Candidates who qualify GATE exam have to appear for COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal).

For candidates, who apply without GATE scores, IIT Kharagpur gives direct admission in the following manner:

  • IIT BTech degrees: Graduates with 8.0 CGPA in BTech from an IIT are eligible to apply without GATE scores.
  • Sponsored candidates: Candidates who are working in any organization and have 2 years of working experience can apply for the program. The candidate must submit a No Objection certificate from the organization.

IIT Kharagpur Admission 2024: How to Apply?

Candidates need to apply for GATE exam and then they have to apply for MTech course at institute’s portal. The steps to apply are as follows:

  • Visit the Official Website of GATE.
  • Fill the Application form with all required details.
  • Submit the scanned documents along with the required Application fee
  • Print the confirmation page for future reference.
  • After qualifying GATE, visit the official website of IIT Kharagpur
  • Register using a valid email, phone number, GATE registration number, and GATE score
  • After successful registration, the candidates can log in to fill in the application form
  • Upload the required documents, and pay the application fee online only
  • Submit and take a printout of the filled-in form.

  • Marksheet of class X, XII, Graduation
  • Caste certificate
  • Proof of having maths in 10+2
  • Scanned photograph and scanned signature.

IIT Kharagpur GATE 2024 Qualifying Cutoff (Expected)

GATE 2024 qualifying cutoff is the minimum mark required to register for the COAP 2023 counselling. There is a difference between the admission cutoff of the institute and minimum cutoff required for participation in the admission process/ counselling. GATE 2024 COAP Registration Process

After passing the GATE entrance exam, candidates are to register for the COAP counseling process to secure their admission into IITs, NITs, and other participating institutes. COAP provides a common platform for the registered candidates to make the most preferred choice for admission into an MTech Program in the participating Institutes. 

Eligibility Criteria to Register for COAP 2024

  1. The candidate must be a citizen of India.
  2. Candidates should have a valid GATE score from 2024/2023/2022/2021.

GATE 2024 COAP Step by Step Registration Process:

The candidates can successfully apply for GATE COAP 2024 by simply following the below:

Step 1: Visit the official website of COAP @ coap.iitd.ac. and click on the registration link.

Step 2: Fill in details such as their GATE Registration Number, GATE Paper Code, GATE score, date of birth.

Step 3: Click on the “Validate” icon and enter the registered email id and mobile number.

Step 4:Click on the “Submit to Register” button.

Step 5: After the registration is successfully done for COAP 2024, the candidates will obtain a Login ID and Password for COAP Login. The same will be sent via Email and SMS.

Step 6: The COAP registration will only be considered as complete only if the candidates log in using the Login ID and Password and verify the registration details.

Step 7: After the completion of the above-given steps, the candidate can access the information on offers made from the participating Institutes.

Step 8: In the end, the admission offer will be uploaded at COAP website and will be tagged with COAP registration number (same as GATE registration number without subject code).

Almost all IITs are excellent engineering colleges providing the best education and amenities. Yet there might be some comparisons that can be drawn based on common aspects like choice, infrastructure, and geographical location. Eventually, it’s a matter of your preferences and not the institute's worth.

For example, if you are someone who considers Academics the most important factor to determine the credibility of an institute, then IIT Kanpur is the best choice for you. It has the toughest grading system and the entire focus is on studies. So if you are excellent in academics, you will remain at the top here.

Both institutes face a certain level of locational disadvantage but IIT Kanpur is still slightly better in this aspect.

I suggest you not to score below 6.5 as CGPA 7 is a must to get admission in a good foreign university. However with a CGPA of 6.5 you can go for Government jobs. I know a friend who did not focus on CGPA and played football and today is struggling to get a good job.

It is all the more difficult to get a good CGPA after low marks in the first semester because the professors evaluate you on the basis of previous grades sometimes. However, you will get placement into a decent private company so you don’t have to worry much.

Basically, even after getting admission at a good institute like IIT KGP, you have to keep struggling to score high marks.

These colleges don’t reveal the separate weightage break-up for work experience, test scores, and other such factors. For the final shortlist, institutes such as IIT KGP, IIM C, and ISI Kolkata take these factors into consideration along with your performance in the interview. These institutes assign a good volume of weightage to the entrance examination score. So, try to improve your test score as much as possible.

A few of my friends were Institute toppers and I asked them about their study method. Most of my topper friends study just 2 days before exams in the library and then teach their friends and clear their doubts. 

Another topper friend solved all the previous year question papers of the subject and uploads the solutions on the Facebook group a day before the exam. She never missed any class, had great handwriting and prepared great notes. 

So basically, toppers , prepare for the exams way before most of us even begin. They are kind, selfless and are ready to help anyone who is unable to cope up.

Ultimately, every student has his unique way of studying.

There are a number of things that distinguish IIT Kharagpur from other IITs. My answer entails such attributes only.

  • Movies at subsidized rates: There are only 2 cinemas in the whole of Kharagpur, the better one obviously being inside the campus. As a result, many district people come and the fee is INR 100/- semester irrespective of how many movies you watch. This crazy deal attracts many.
  • Fastest and unlimited DC++:  This is a software that allows sharing of files over LAN. This amazing software makes it possible for you to download a file faster than copying it from someone. A variety of things can be downloaded like books, question papers, software, games, movies, TV Series, etc. There are no download limits too unlike some other IITs.
  • Illumination: This is a unique phenomenon one can witness in IIT KGP during Diwali. Each of the 20 hostels participates in a competition wherein the students of that hostel have to portray a scene/message using Diyas. Rangoli was also made in this competition.
  • Bond with seniors: IIT KGP has a harmonious ambiance and seniors are extremely friendly and approachable. There is this trend wherein seniors write to their juniors about how they feel, and any advice on scrapbooks, chart sheets, etc.
  • Night routine: The students have crazy sleeping habits with some of them only sleeping for an hour or two at around 7 am only to wake up at 8:5O to rush to classes.
  • Mess Food. The food, especially North Indian food is decent and not like that served in IIT MG or IITM. The quality of the food has seen a steady improvement with a 4 meal plan per day. The mess serves Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, and Dinner. 
  • Canteen: IIT KGP has 20 hostels (14 boys, 6 girls) and every hostel has its own canteen which runs from 3-4 AM every day. Some halls even serve their own specialty.
  • College Fests: A number of cultural and technical fests are held at IIT KGP. Spring Fest is the Cultural Fest of IIT Kharagpur which is the biggest festival in eastern India whereas Kshitij is the Technical Fest of IIT Kharagpur, Asia’s Largest Technological-Management Fest.
  • Eateries: Inside IIT KGP you can find Subway, CCD, Rooster, and Baskin Robbins offering food at affordable prices whereas outside you can find Dominos Pizza and a restaurant Flavors.

Life at IIT KGP is filled with fun and exciting activities.

One of my friends had the absolute delight to appear for the PGDBA interview conducted by a multifaceted panel. He shared his interview experience which might help you a bit.

Before the interview began, he was taken for a Verification Round wherein, every detail of academics scores or other profile-related information was cross-checked on the IIMs format. Once they received an IIM-verified document they were escorted to the interview venue.

The interview room had 3 panels; one from each institute obviously.

They asked for his brief introduction first. On hearing about his interest in Data Analytics, panelists probed him further with questions like

  • What is Data Analytics
  • Difference between analytics and analysis
  • Contemporary Data analytics and ML

They further asked him why he chose Analytics. He told them that the increasing demand for the same in Europe and China made him realize how much India lacks in this aspect and thus he wanted to invest his efforts in Data Analytics.

Next, he was tested on his knowledge of Statistics and Mathematics with questions like 

  • Difference between mean, mode, Media
  • Skewness
  • Relationship of mean, mode, and median in a positive Skew graph
  • Hypothesis Testing
  • What is Anova

The next panelist took the reins and gave him a problem from SPC quality control. He asked him how do you know that his process in electric bulb making is as per customer Norma and is statistically controlled. My friend was able to answer most of the questions confidently and even solved this problem through charts. 

Lastly, he was asked about his extracurricular activities and hobbies. The discussion ended with him asking about GST and the difference between GST and previous tax. Even though he gave a common answer, he managed to convert the interview.

ISI Kolkata is the best option for MSc in Maths, followed by IISc. IIT KGP is reputed in the technology domain, but for core science subjects, it’s not a good option. If you are interested to pursue pure Mathematics, choosing ISI is the best option among these. It specializes in the field. You will get better career opportunities and exposure in the field.
