Banaras Hindu University (BHU), formerly known as Central Hindu College, is a central university in Varanasi, India. Established in 1916, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia and one of the oldest universities with the status of “Institutes of National Importance” by the UGC. It is also one of the 12 institutions from India in BRICS Universities League, a consortium of leading research universities from BRICS countries. BHU comprises 2 campuses, 5 Institutes, 16 Faculties, and 135 departments offering more than 350 courses at UG, PG, and Research levels.

BHU Admission 2024

BHU admission process is completely online. Candidates seeking admission to UG and PG courses at BHU must appear for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), conducted by the NTA. BHU accepts national-level entrance exams such as CAT, NATA, and NEET for admission to MBA, B.Arch, and MBBS/BDS programs, respectively. The final selection is done through a counselling process conducted by the university. Registration for admission at BHU usually starts in the month of May or June every year. Aspirants can apply online on the official website of the university @bhuonline.in.

BHU Scholarships

The University provides financial help to deserving students under the Students’ Welfare Fund. Mentioned below are the details for the same:

  • 50 poor students shall be provided Lunch and Dinner under “Free Meal Facility” for at least 7 months. In the case of female hostellers, they will be reimbursed the actual Mess charges.
  • 20 blind students shall be entitled to get Free Lunch and Dinner and also an amount of INR 5000 per annum under “Annadaan Yojana”.
  • First and Second Rank holders will be awarded a Cash Prize of INR 4000 and INR 300 respectively.
  • An amount of INR 2000 per annum shall be granted as Financial Assistance to the students belonging to poor family background. This will be subject to a maximum of 100 students.
  • A one time grant of INR 4000 per student shall be provided to the Physically Handicapped students for their entire course tenure, subject to a maximum of 25 students.
  • Sleeper Class Rail Fare will be reimbursed to the students, other than research scholars, who participate in any national level seminar/symposia/conference.
  • A maximum of INR 5000 shall be provided as Financial Assistance for organizing Seminars/Workshops, at the Faculty/Institute level, which should be beneficial to the students, subject to a maximum of 10 Seminars/Symposia/Workshops per annum.

BHU Campus & Facilities

BHU has three campuses, the main university campus is spread over 1,300 acres of land which is located on the southern edge of Varanasi. The university has more than 72 hostels offering accommodation to nearly 12000 students and is equipped with all the amenities including internet. The main campus of BHU has the largest tertiary referral hospital in the region with a bed capacity of more than 900. There’s an archaeological museum on the campus which is best known for its collection of Indian paintings, but also includes archaeological artifacts, textiles and costumes, Indian philately as well as literary and archival materials. The other campus, Rajiv Gandhi South Campus is located in Barkachha in the Mirzapur district about 60 km (37 mi) southwest of the main campus. Facilities offered at the BHU campus include library, Wi-Fi classrooms, Sports Complex, Labs, Health Care, etc.

BHU FAQs

Ques. What are the reservation criteria for SC/ST students at BHU? 

Ans. Banaras Hindu University or BHU gives reservations to deserving students from the reserved categories. The reservation policy is as follows: 

  • In each course, 15% and 7.5% of the seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, respectively. A 27% of candidates from the OBC category (excluding those from the creamy layer) will be given preference in various courses.
  • Female candidates are granted 15% of the total seats in M.P.Ed. If any of these seats become available, they will be filled based on merit by male candidates.
  • Physically Challenged Candidates will be given 3% of the seats. Visually Impaired (1%), Hearing Impaired (1%), Orthopaedically Handicapped (1%), and others.

Ques. Can I get admission in BHU without an entrance exam?

Ans. No, Banaras Hindu University or BHU does not admit students based on merit. On the contrary, students have to appear for National level entrance exams such as NEET UG, CUET UG, CUET PG, CAT, GPAT, NTA PhD and more to get admission into the renowned Institution. Additionally, to get admission into any PhD program or M.Phil course, students must appear for the University Research Entrance Test or BHU RET. Some of the courses also require a personal interview from BHU department authorities.

Ques. How can I get admission in BHU after 12th?

Ans. BHU or Banaras Hindu University admits students into its undergraduate and postgraduate programs based on CUET scores. Students can be admitted into BHU after 12th by appearing in the national-level entrance examination. Once the CUET results are out, BHU releases merit lists on its official website to announce the shortlisted candidates in its UG or PG degree. 

Moreover, students who wish to pursue MBBS or BAMS must appear in the NEET exam and follow the counseling conducted by the medical counseling committee to secure a seat at the national university. 

Ques. Which applicants are exempted from the PHD entrance test at BHU?

Ans. BHU conducts the Banaras Hindu University Research Entrance Test (Bhu-RET) for PhD programs for specializations wherein the NTA PhD does not conduct the doctorate level exam. However, applicants who have qualified for exams such as UGC/CSIR/ICMR/ICAR/DBT and other Government Testing Agencies/ other National Level Tests are exempted from BHU- RET. The university level PhD exam is held for subjects like

Ques. How much score is required in CUET for BHU?

Ans. BHU admits students in undergraduate courses, based on CUET scores. The National University releases cut-off lists after the NTA results are out. According to the results and the registration, BHU announces cut-off marks with the list of shortlisted candidates. The 2023 cut-off mark for BA Honours for a general student is 170. Ques. Is 12th marks important for BHU?

Ans. Banaras Hindu University or BHU does not consider class 12 marks while giving admission to a candidate. However, the aspirant must've passed 10 + 2 with the required eligibility criteria for their desired course. The admission is given based on the marks scored in the entrance test and the personal interview (wherever applicable). 

Ques. What is the age limit for BHU admission? 

Ans. BHU has an age limit for undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The age criteria vary from course to course. The basic age limit is not to be more than 22 years on 1st July 2023 (applicant should be born on or after July 2, 2001). However, some courses such as BSc Hons. Agriculture has age criteria of 16 to 25 years as of July 2023. It is best to read the eligibility criteria before applying for admission into the national level University. 

Ques. Does BHU offer diploma/certificate courses?

Ans. Yes, Banaras Hindu University, or BHU offers diplomas, certificates, and full-time degrees to students. The certificate program lasts up to 6 months and the diploma on the contrary is one year long. These academic programs are offered under the Institute of Management Studies. Ques. How are students selected for the BHU MBA program?

Ans. BHU offers a regular MBA and a specialization in International Business. The admission into both specializations is based on the academic performance of class 10th, and 12th, CAT scores, Group Discussion, and Personal Interview. Candidates must enter class 10th and 12th aggregate final marks because it will constitute 20% of the combined merit of the candidate. The following is the division of marks:

Ques. Does BHU offer scribe facilities for PwD students?

Ans. BHU provides a scribe for persons with benchmark disability. The candidate has the option to bring their own scribe by requesting the admin office or controller of examination. Students can also request for a crime by the Banaras Hindu University itself. In order to avail of the facility, students must have enclosed the disability certificate or similar proof of disability at the time of admission and examination. 

Ques. How is the BA course at BHU?

Ans. The BA program of Banaras Hindu University is good. The Arts faculty of BHU has the best professors in the language department. The most preferred language course in BA is German as it has the best placements in the whole Arts department.

Ques. What are the facilities offered to students at BHU?

Ans. The facilities offered at BHU are as follows:

  • Hostel: There are as many as sixty hostels run by the university and as many as nine thousand two hundred and eighteen students, if not more, can be accommodated. BHU has separate hostels for boys and girls.
  • Computer center: It can be accessed by students and faculty members who wish to browse the internet in order to get ahead with their academic work. Data analysis software products are installed on most of the computers as are emailing facilities and of course access to Microsoft Office.
  • International center: Banaras Hindu University has an international center. This center takes care of the needs and requirements of the foreign nationals who are studying at the University. In some ways, it serves as a grievance cell for them.

Ques. How to crack the BHU entrance exam?

Ans. BHU entrance exams are different for different programs. For UG program admissions, The college accepts CUET UG and for PG program admissions, the college accepts CUET PG scores.

The syllabus for both exams depends on the concerned subject of the qualifying exam. Students must prepare well by practicing the previous question papers and a little bit of knowledge of general awareness.

Ans. BHU is usually compared with Delhi University (DU), and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) as all these are central universities. Ans: Between JNU & BHU, both the universities have world rankings for their academic performance & excellence. Ans: BHU provides several extracurricular activities such as Mountaineering, NSS, NCC, etc. For the all-around growth of students, BHU arranges these activities. It also helps to develop other interests apart from the studies. At the mountaineering center, the students are trained for primary mountaineering & advanced mountaineering. However, they must clear the CUET exam. Such candidates require 40% of aggregate marks for LLB./B.A. LLB. (Hons.). The OBC and PWD candidates there is a relaxation of 5% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination in minimum eligibility requirements.

Although BHU has the best faculty and management, many students tend to leave BHU after a few days. They feel isolated and homesick. Also, the teachers have a lot of political influence. The administration does not let you take a stand for yourself. A lot of inter students riots take place here.

Also, BHU has a sustaining hierarchy and preferential treatment that seeps down to the education part as well. Ex-students become professors without external exposure. So they bring much lesser value in terms of ethics, fair marking, and admission system.

I think these are some minor reasons why students keep leaving BHU after admission.

Firstly, the hostel fees at BHU vary from course to course. So all I can do is give you a rough estimate through the information I got from my sister who pursued B.Sc from BHU.

Hostel Fees

  • 1st semester stood: INR 2666
  • 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th semester: INR 1290 (regular fee and hostel fee both)
  • 3rd, 5th, and 7th: INR 3190 (regular fee and hostel fee)

Mess Charges: 

  • INR 40 for a simple diet
  • INR 60 for special
  • INR 80 for chicken

Usually, there are 2 diets a day and on Sundays, there is only one diet. But the Sunday meal is special so it is counted as a double diet. So the approximate price stands at INR 80-100 per day.

If you skip the meal or go home then you can tell Mess Maharaj and you won’t be charged.

There are 2 types of seats in BHU:

  • Regular seats

  • Paid seats

For the regular seats you need to pay minimal fees.

For the paid seats, you have to pay an additional fee apart from the regular fee. 

If your rank is near the cutoff, then BHU offers paid seats to give you a second chance provided that you pay an additional fee. There are around 10% paid seats in every faculty.

You have to apply separately at the time of counseling. Attend the counseling session to fill in your choice of combination. If your name appears in the list of 10% of students you can get admitted to the university after paying the fees and additional amount.

The BSc (Maths) entrance exam is BHU is one of the easiest exams. You can score fairly good marks by just going through your 12th-grade Maths, Physics, and Chemistry books. Study Chemistry from NCERT book. A thorough study of the following chapters will get you good marks:

  • Biomolecule

  • Polymer

  • Animes

  • Chemistry in everyday life

The questions in the entrance exam are mostly based on direct concepts or formulas.

As far as the number of marks necessary is concerned, there is no fixed digit. But at least attempt 70 questions without mistakes. This means you need to score at least 210 marks out of 450. However, this number keeps changing based on the pattern of the question paper.

BHU and AMU are sister concerns. Both institutes carry forward the same legacy so I don’t think they are comparable. 

People usually want to believe that these biased universities will divide Hindus and Muslims and worsen their relations. But that’s not the case.

Both universities are loyal to their cause- Education. 

As an AMU student, my sister loves her university. She has never visited BHU but she is sure BHU students love their university equally as well. 

So I don’t think the two universities stand a chance of comparison when they both are equally good.

To say, one of these is better than the other will be an oversimplification. You should choose BHU or DU based on the course you are interested in. Here is a streamwise comparison of DU and BHU. 

Arts - For English and Economics, DU is better. BHU courses are better for Sanskrit, Hindi, Geography, and Philosophy. For the rest of these subjects, these institutes are at a similar level. 

Science - BHU is slightly ahead for most of the science stream. 

Commerce - For commerce courses, DU is definitely better. 

Engineering - It won’t be fair to compare IIT BHU with DU. The former is way ahead of the latter. 

Management - FMS is a tier 1 B-School and arguably the best non-IIM school in the country. IMS BHU ranks nowhere near FMS. 

Law - For law degrees, DU has a slight advantage because of its location. 

Medical - IMS BHU is one of the best medical institutes in the country. 

Academics are more or less the same at BHU and DU. However, big names like St. Stephens, SRCC, LSR, etc. are a little ahead of BHU in terms of teaching quality. BHU offers better research facilities, especially for science courses. DU is way ahead of BHU in terms of corporate jobs and civil services. 

BHU offers a better campus experience compared to DU. But if we talk about location, choosing a metropolitan city, Delhi will be more advantageous. You will have greater exposure and opportunities

BHU offers a vibrant campus life. Many cultural events and extra-curricular activities take place around the academic year. You will hardly find a day without any such activities happening on campus. 

The campus is huge and lush green. BHU offers excellent facilities to students such as the university library, many cafeterias, various clubs, etc. Food offered at the mess is average. IIT offers better food in comparison. Bus services are available for students. Having a personal bi-cycle, scooter, or bike will be helpful, in commuting. 

The academics offered by BHU are good and the professors are helpful. The examinations are easy in general but you will have to put in extra effort, to secure good placements.
