IIST is known for its flagship program of B.Tech which is being offered in 2 specializations, namely, Aerospace Engineering and Avionics. For the B.Tech admissions at IIST, candidates are required to appear for the both JEE Main and JEE Advanced examination and participate in the counseling for final seat allotments. IIST charges a fee of INR 1.36 Lakhs per year for its B.Tech program.

IIST also offers admissions to the other courses such as M.Tech, and Ph.D. programs. Admissions to the M.Tech program are done on the basis of GATE score, while Ph.D. admissions are based on the written test and interview conducted by the institute. The selection criteria, dates, eligibility, and application process are discussed in the article.

How To Apply : IIST Admission 2023

Candidates who are desirous to join the Undergraduate and Dual Degree Programs offered by IIST are required to apply separately to IIST through the online application portal and follow the steps detailed below:

Registration: Visit the online application portal and choose the link to Undergraduate Admission 2021. Follow the instructions given and fill in all the details. The successfully registered candidates will be given a system generated IIST Registration Number. Candidates need to specify a password. It is the sole responsibility of the candidate to keep the password secured to avoid any misuse. Candidates are required to upload soft copy of the same photograph that they have used for JEE (Advanced) 2021 registration. Candidates are advised to carefully read the eligibility criteria detailed in Section 8 before registration.
Registration Fee Payment: Registration Fee payment is through e-payment mode ONLY and should be done by visiting the online application portal and clicking on the PAY REGISTRATION FEE link. Receipt of payment will be confirmed through registered E-mail and mobile number. The Registration Fee is non-refundable and is detailed below for the various categories.

- Female candidates in General/ EWS/ OBC-NCL: INR 300
- All SC/ ST/ PD candidates: INR 300

IIST B.Tech & Dual B.Tech. Admission 2023

The IIST offers undergraduate programmes as well as a Dual degree programme.

Dual Degree (B.Tech. + M.S./M.Tech.) will provide the candidate to obtain B.Tech. degree in Engineering Physics along with the Post-Graduate degree specializations in any one of the (i) M.S. (Astronomy & Astrophysics) (ii) M.S. (Earth System Science) (iii) M.S. (Solid State Physics) (iv) M.Tech. (Optical Engineering).
Once a candidate enrolls for the Dual Degree programme, he/she cannot opt out after the completing the B.Tech part of the course post 4 years.
The B.Tech programmes have an intake of 60 seats whereas the Dual Degree programme enrolls a selected 20 students only.

Counseling Procedure:

The admission to under graduate courses is done through personal counseling based upon merit which is strictly governed by the reservation policy laid down by the Government.

Candidates who wish to pursue under graduate courses must register themselves online on the IIST website, ensuring that they fulfill the eligibility criteria.
The institute generates an admission list based upon the same.
Therefore, only those, registered online will be considered eligible for this admission list.
This admission list will include JEE(Advanced) All-India Rank (including category rank of the candidates).

He/she must have studied Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, a language and a fifth subject, different from the above listed four subjects. He/she must appear for the Joint Entrance Examination (Main) which is conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi and should fulfill: (1) General Candidates (GEN)- he/she must have 20% in average and a minimum of 5% in each of the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics. (2) Other Backward Community- he/she must have 18% in average and a minimum of 4.5% in each of the Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics. IIST B.Tech. & Dual B.Tech. courses Application Process 2021

Candidates must register for the JEE Main or JEE Advanced, if they wish to enroll for UG in IIST. Post registration, he/she will receive a roll number which must be retained for reference at the time of admission. He/she must submit the application fee of INR 600 (INR 300/- for SC, ST, PWD and women candidates).

IIST M.Tech. & MS Admission 2023

Multiple technical courses at the post graduate level are offered by the IIST.

If a candidate wishes to apply for more than one course at a time, he/she will be required to pay the individual fee for each course as listed by the respective Department.
For M.Tech in Earth System Sciences, candidates who hold M. Sc. degree must have studied Physics, Mathematics as main subjects during graduation whereas students having B. Tech or BE degree in other branches of engineering will be eligible when they also have relevant experience in concerned areas of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences/ Meteorology/ Geology/ Remote Sensing etc.

IIST M.Tech. & MS Courses Application Process 2021

B.E./B.Tech./Master of Science or equivalent degree with a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA 6.50 out of 10 for General / EWS & OBC category and minimum of 55% marks or CGPA 6.00 out of 10 for SC/ST/PD category. A valid score in GATE in the relevant area as the case may be is essential.
He/she must ensure the eligibility criteria and then fill in the application form online on the institute website.
The registration fee as to be paid online according to the category the candidate falls in.
It is compulsory to carry the hard copy of the form at the time of personal interview/entrance examination.
The application fee for PG programs is INR 600 (INR 300/- for SC, ST, PWD and women candidates).

IIST Ph.D. Admission 2023

The doctoral courses offered by the IIST requires candidates to be:

Candidates who hold an M.Tech degree should have secured first class during the completion of the course or an that of an equivalent value. The admission to the post graduation in technical course must be based upon the GATE score.
If he/she has a MS degree in Engineering or that of an equivalent value from top foreign Universities with a maintained excellent academic performance throughout need not have a valid GATE score.
IF he/she has completed an Integrated Master degree (or Dual Degree) in Engineering / Technology from institutes such as IITs and IISc, maintaining a CGPA 9.0/10 need not have a valid GATE score. OR
He/she must have a degree in post-graduation in the respective or relevant field, securing first class division. He/she should also have qualified UGC/CSIR NET-JRF/JEST (or) GATE in respective or relevant fields. OR
He/she must have a degree in post-graduation in the respective or relevant field, securing first class division. He/she should also have qualified UGC NET JRF in respective or relevant fields. OR
Candidates with an exceptionally excellent academic performance in their graduation can be considered for direct admissions to Ph.D. programmes. They must have secured CGPA of 9.0/10 (or more that that), valid GATE score of 675 or better. Those who hold B.E./B. Tech degrees from IITs should have secured a CGPA better than 9.0/10 and do not require a valid GATE score.

IIST Ph.D. courses Application Process 2021

Students can apply for the doctoral programmes offered by IIST by visiting the official website only.
While filling out the details, he/she must thoroughly check it because once submitted, there will be no scope of any corrections in the already filled application form.
If the candidate wishes to enroll for multiple courses, he/she must submit the non-refundable application fee for each course separately. The application fee is INR 700/- per department (INR 250/- per department for SC/ST/PWD and Women). The candidate must carry the challan copy at the time of admission.
It is mandatory to produce a “No Objection Certificate” for those who are working in Government/Semi Government/PSUs/Autonomous Bodies from their present employer.
Candidates seeking out admission to reserved seats must upload the relevant certificate on the website while filling out the details in the application form.

In the recent NIRF ranking 2020, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Jodhpur, IIST Thiruvananthapuram stands at 15th, 50th, 33rd respectively. IIT Dharwad was recently established, and it's making all efforts to be ranked among the best. Here are a few factors that you should consider while comparing these institutes.

Admission:

For admission into IITs, students need to qualify for the JEE mains exam and get a good score in the JEE Advanced exam. The eligibility criteria are 10+2 with 75% aggregate in the science stream.
For admission into IIST Thiruvananthapuram, eligibility is 10+2 with a minimum of 75% aggregate in the science stream and a valid JEE Mains score.
The total seat intake for ECE at IIST is 60. 50 seats at IIT Dharwad for EE and 120 seats for EIE at IIT Dhanbad. 80 seats at IIT Jodhpur for ME.

In the recent placement drive, IIT Dhanbad placed 61.90% of its students from the EIE branch. The highest package offered was INR 13 LPA. Top recruiters were Google, Goldman Sachs, Walmart.
In the year 2020, a total of 83% of students were placed from the Mechanical branch at IIT Jodhpur. Top recruiters were TCS, Maruti Suzuki, Honda, Infosys.
The top recruiter at IIST is ISRO that hired 108 Btech students. 27% of students were placed from the ECE branch.
IIT Dharwad saw its first batch of placement, and Microsoft offered the highest internship package of INR 80000 per month.

Scholarships are offered by all the colleges to help the students during their course of study. As for which institute will be better you should decide that according to your course of choice.

Which will be a better choice, 5 year MTech in IIT Bhubaneswar or 4 year chemical in IIT Hyderabad or aerospace in IIST?

M.Tech from IIT Bhubaneswar makes sense only if you are willing to study more on research-based topics of the subject. It is best if one is looking for a career in Teaching, Researching, etc. to further gain knowledge about the subject and not work in MNCs.

IIT Hyderabad ranks 8th in the Engineering category by NIRF 2020. The number of students who got placed from the Chemical Engineering department in the 2019 placements was 26. The average salary package offered to students with Chemical Engineering is 15 lakhs per annum.

IIST is a space institute under the Department of Space. The students from IIST are recruited as scientists and engineers in the Department of Space facilities and Indian Space Research Organization centers all over India. They receive a starting salary of 10 lakhs per annum. Facilities like Infrastructure, Library, sports facilities, Computer labs, clinics, Data centers in IIST are much better and well equipped than the IITs.

Thus it is your choice to opt for what course you are interested in.

Should I take aerospace engineering at IIST or ECE at MNNIT Allahabad?

In the year 2020, the ranking of IIST was #33 by NIRF for B.Tech courses. On the other hand, MNNIT Allahabad was ranked #48^th by NIRF for B.Tech courses. With excellent teaching staff, IIST is the 1^st space institute in Asia to offer programs in space science and technology.

Admission:

IIST:

The candidate must have completed 10+2 with a minimum of 75% from a recognized boardin Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics.
A valid score in JEE Advanced is required.
The fees for the 1st year inAerospace engineering course is Rs. 96,800.
The total intake of the program is 60 seats.

MNNIT Allahabad:

Candidate must have completed 10+2 in Science stream with a minimum 75% marks.
Candidate must have passed the entrance exam, i.e., JEE Main.
For ECE 1st year, the feeis Rs 84,666.
The general cut off for home state students ranged from 3600 to 7128 and for other state students it is from 4615 to 6752.

Placements

In IIST:
- Top recruitersare TCS, Adobe, Wipro, Mercedes Benz (India) Limited, Philips, Intel, Bosch, Cypress, UTC Aerospace Systems, etc.
- The highest salary offered to the student of the institution was INR 10 LPA.
In MNNIT Allahabad:
- 90.63% was the placement rate of MNNIT Allahabad for theECE department.
- Some of the top recruitersof MNNIT Allahabad are the Indian Navy, Dell, Canon, BHEL, E-bay, Adobe, Bharat Institute of Technology, etc.
- The highest salary offered to the students is INR 25.33 LPA and the average salary offered to the students is INR 10.95 LPA.

Choosing the subject depends on the individual itself. IISR will be really good if the candidate is very much interested in space and technology, as the institute primarily focuses only on space studies. Being a part of the 1^st institute in the world to offer complete range of programs in space and technology will be plus point. Late Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam was the former Chancellor of the University. The city life of Kerala is much better than Allahabad. Now, based on all the data and their interest the candidate can choose the subject and institute accordingly.
