Model Answer:

We are aware that India gained independence in 1947 and on January 26, 1950. The Constitution was established and was followed by the first democratic elections being conducted in 1951. Despite remembering all these events, do we ever raise the question that what is the purpose of a democratically-elected government? The answer is simply ‘NO’, and this is the reason why a common man suffers despite having a democratically-elected government.

Democracy is a system that means ‘rule by the people'. In simpler words, a democracy needs the active participation of the people in electing a government. India is considered to be the largest democracy and after a regular interval of 5 years elections are conducted. But have we ever questioned that despite having a government of our own choice why are we still lagging behind in comparison to other countries. Let’s compare ourselves with the United States of America. The US is the oldest democracy in the world and we can clearly see a huge difference between India and the US. We do not question our government. We must understand that in a democracy the power is in the hands of the common people.

The prime and foremost problem of India is unemployment. India is a country with a majority of the youth population. And it is an alarming situation, where a country with about 60% of the population of the working-age is facing a problem such as unemployment. Increasing joblessness in the country presents the largest risk for the resurrection of consumption. Further, if it is not checked by the government then there is a potential for political instability. The Indian government, if desired, can leverage its youth population by giving them ample working opportunities. Moreover, it can consider transforming India into the country with the largest workforce. As per the latest report from the World Bank, the joblessness within the age groups 15-24 years is insanely high at 23.01%. Despite a low labour force participation rate (LFPR) of 27.06%. On comparing these numbers to Bangladesh these are 12.13% and 41.97% and for China, these numbers are 11.01% and 45.97%. This should be a wake-up call for our government and policy-makers.

As per economic surveys, only 2.1% of our country’s GDP is spent on healthcare. In the year 2021, the entire world witnessed how India was ravaged by the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite stringent lockdowns, we saw that during the second lakhs of people died. Now was it only due to this deadly virus that so many people died during the second wave? Well! The answer is no.

The education system in India needs immediate attention too. Education is one of the key factors that contribute to the growth of the economy. Let’s outline the problems in the education system of India. First, is low-quality education provided in government-run schools. The majority population in India is poor and cannot afford education so they have no choice but government schools for their children. The quality of education provided in government schools is extremely poor and it requires immediate attention. The second problem is the commercialization of education provided by private institutions.

Having talked about the problems that require immediate solutions. Let us throw light upon some other anticipated problems that can be planned but on a secondary basis. Our government has increased its defence spending and has been focused on anticipated threats from our two neighbours. Here, my point was that it’s high time we start questioning the government for every decision that they make for the country. Always remember that the government is “by the people, for the people, and of the people”.
