IIT Madras is the best choice for MTech in Chemical Engineering. Some reasons that support my claim are

  • Being a metropolitan, Madras ensures better living standards and transport facilities thus attracting more faculty.
  • The R and D centers of most top MNCs are located in Bangalore and Mumbai. Owing to the proximity Madras is preferred over KGP.
  • Most process industries prefer BTech students over MTech students as chemical engineers. Only R and D and Consulting companies look for MTech students for core jobs.
  • Better facilities attract better students thus you will find a better class of peers at IIT Madras in contrast to IIT KGP.
  • The faculty comprises professors belonging to various fields and cultures whereas IIT KGP has more Bengali professors.

Thus, considering the demand for PG students and facilities at IIT Madras, it seems to be a better option for MTech than KGP.

Admission:

  • Aspirants must clear GATE in order to get admitted for m.tech BME at IIT BHU.

  • Students from any IITs having a B.Tech degree with a CGPA equal to or higher than 8.0 can get direct admission for this course at IIT BHU without having to appear for GATE.

  • GATE cutoff for students from General, OBC, and SC/ST categories are 25.0, 22.5, and 16.6 respectively.

  • IIT BHU offers only 12 seats for m.tech in BME thus making the selection process highly competitive.

Placement statistics:

  • 52 companies participated in the recruitment process in 2020 making 570+ job offers.

  • Lead recruiters include Adobe, Amazon, Capgemini, Flipkart.

  • M.tech BME graduates of the 2019-20 batch have a placement record of 73% with a median salary of 9 LPA.

  • Best ever CTC offered domestically for a BME graduate is 68 LPA.

  • As BME is still a growing field in India core companies visiting the campus are very few, so many students land up in IT companies.

  • All students are offered a Teaching Assistantship for the course of 2 years at IIT BHU.

  • All students are offered internship opportunities through college with a minimum stipend of 80,000.

BME is still a blooming field in India thus there will be high scope for BME graduates in the coming years. If you want to take up research further, BME from IIT BHU is an amazing decision. As of now, there may be less lucrative job offers from core companies not only through campus but anywhere in the country in general. M.tech in BME is a good option if you are looking for a career abroad.

The placement statistics for MTech Chemical Engineering at IIT BHU are average at best. In recent years, the median CTC received by the students of this branch was 15 LPA. There are very few core companies visiting the campus placements for Chemical Engineering. This is the case for other IITs as well. Some of the recruiters that offered placement opportunities to M.Tech Chemical Engineering students in past are Deloitte, Amazon, American Express, Google, etc.

Academic wise IIT BHU is great, it offers good exposure as well. But if you are expecting whopping placement packages, you will be disappointed.

IIT BHU is a good option to pursue M.Tech in chemical engineering. The professors at IIT BHU in the chemical engineering department are well qualified and experienced. But as far as placements are concerned, M. Tech in chemical engineering from IIT BHU may not sound as many of the core as well as non- core companies are not open for placement to this branch. The major recruiters in the core sector for B.tech students in chemical engineering are Reliance and BPCL but both of them are not open for M.Tech students. Also, many big companies in the non–core sector like those of software, finance, data analysts are also not open for M.Tech students. That is why the average package for M.Tech students in chemical engineering is low. But the M. Tech degree of chemical engineering from IIT BHU can be quite valuable because it helps in off-campus placements and increases the chances of getting promotion in jobs over B.Tech students.

Comparably BIT Pilani will offer better career options for Chemical Engineering. Also, one of my friends attends BIT Mesra for Chemical Engineering, so I have some idea about the course at the institute.

BIT Mesra:

In his branch, there are 60 chemical engineering students and 60 polymer students. The size of the batches does cause an issue during placements. On average, around 30% of students get placed with core companies. You may also want to consider these points.

Faculty and Teaching Methodology:

The faculty assigned for chemical engineering are IITians with PhDs, but their pedagogy is average. You'll be given a lot of quotidian assignments which do not have any scope of exploration.

Infrastructure:

The chemical engineering department has laboratories packed with flow meters, filters, and other important tools but the overall infrastructure is not up to the mark.

Grading System:

Getting a good CGPA is a bit difficult because of the grading system and strict faculty.

In general, the program is full of average students who are not very creative. Most students mug up the syllabus to score well. As for placements, here is a table.

Parameters
