If you have other options like older IIMs or private B Schools such as MDI or SP Jain, I would recommend you to go for them instead of DoMS, IIT Madras. I am not saying MBA from DoMS is a bad idea, it’s just that B Schools are best for MBA.
MBA program offered at DoMS IIT Madras has the following pros and cons
Pros
Cons
Overall, DoMS offers the best experience and the MBA is a good choice considering the ROI, campus life, and exposure provided by IIT Madras.
As far as I got to know from my friend studying there, DOMS IIT Madras is a good institute. Also, DOMS IIT Madras is certainly better than the new IIMs. There are some reasons behind it, which I am going to share with you.
He shared one experience about an IIM Bangalore guy who was given a project to collate existing data from all the possible data streams in the function and generate a report out of it. But he was too lazy to work upon it and was not given any offer.
And after this one case, IBM finance never went to IIM Bangalore for internships ever since.
My personal experience is that IIT Madras is in fact comparable to IIM Indore and Kochi if not better; surely much better than new IIMs.
IIM Udaipur is outright incomparable to IIT Madras. This is because while IIT Madras is an excellent educational institution, it specializes in technological studies and not in Management. Meanwhile IIM Udaipur despite being a new IIM has set itself apart from its competitors owing to the following reasons
Overall you will experience a very student driven culture and create many amazing memories.
At IIT Madras, you have the privilege of having taken a course in R&D Management at the Department of Management Studies (DOMS) at the institution. The course is renowned for its comprehensive curriculum that covers various aspects of R&D management, including product development, project management, and technology commercialization. The faculty is well-experienced and knowledgeable in their respective fields, and they are known to provide valuable insights and guidance to students. The DOMS at IIT Madras is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure, making it an ideal place to pursue management education.
IIM Visakhapatnam, on the other hand, is one of the new IIMs that was established in 2015. It offers the Post Graduate Program in Management (PGP), which is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the various functional areas of management, as well as the skills and knowledge required to become successful managers. IIMs have a well-established brand name in the field of management education and are known for their rigorous curriculum, highly-qualified faculty, and excellent placement record.
In conclusion, both IIT Madras and IIM Visakhapatnam are reputed institutions that offer quality management education. The choice between the two will ultimately depend on your personal and professional goals, as well as your preferences. You should consider factors such as curriculum, faculty, infrastructure, and location, among others, before making a decision. It is also recommended that you research both institutions in-depth and visit their campuses to get a better understanding of the learning environment and culture.
While many may discredit IIM Raipur because it is not an old IIM, I will still choose it over IIT Madras DoMS. My preference is based on the following reasons
To get a deeper insight into the credibility of IIM Raipur try comparing the companies that visit the campus with that of IIT Madras.
IIT Madras is a premiere Engineering college and all the courses are of premium quality and taught by world-class faculty. Talking specifically about DoMS, it has some of the oldest and most highly experienced faculty who are very cooperative and guide the students throughout their journey.
IIT Madras faculty are experts in their area of specialization mainly because my cousin was an M S - Mech student, and had to audit classes, with the Consent Of Teachers in the Management Studies department. She was fortunate enough to avail the opportunity to teach in DoMS. She was impressed by the faculty of the department and shared her wonderful experience.
Not only in academics but the department is also known for its valuable research work done by MS students. Many students even opt for Ph.D. after completing their MS. IIT Madras’ Central Library is no joke given the huge variety of books and unique research materials. It runs 24/7 and one can even photocopy necessary material for research purposes.
Without further hesitation, go for MS at DoMS IIT Madras and you will realize how wonderful a decision it was.
If you want my honest opinion here it is. I would choose neither of the colleges you mentioned. My opinion is based on the following reasons.
But if you have no other options at all, then IIM Nagpur seems the better of the two. It is in the process of developing so maybe in some years it earns the credibility it owes to the IIM family and lives up to its name. Also some blind companies still prefer IIM students over other B Schools.
My choice will forever be IIM Udaipur solely because of the IIM tag. I know people will criticize me for this mindset but one cannot ignore the IIM brand name. Moreover IIT is a top technical institute but it’s a fact that its Management Department is not at par with the top B Schools.
Overall I feel curriculum-wise IIM has more to offer than an IIT simple because of the fact that it specializes in the field.
It is recommended not to join any of the 2 mentioned colleges, neither DoMS, IIT Madras nor IIM Amritsar, as the placements at newer Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are not yet on par with top colleges. Placements at newer IIMs are still evolving and it may take at least a decade for them to stabilize and for the demand for MBA degrees to increase in the long run.
It is important to note that Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are not generally considered to be top colleges for MBA programs, although IIT KGP and IIT Bombay have made a name for themselves. These institutions are primarily known for their strong focus on technology. If you are considering top MBA programs, IIT Madras is a good option due to its brand recall.
The institution has the potential to attract top tech companies to offer MBA roles as well. Older IITs have a well-established reputation which newer institutes may not yet have. It took almost 3 decades for IIM Lucknow to reach its current level of prestige, and that was without the level of competition that newer IIMs face in attracting the best companies and roles on campus.
I still don’t understand why people have to choose between colleges. Rather than the institute, what matters is what you learn from the college. Many people from IITs regret not choosing a different field while many are content with their decision. It all comes down to what you like and want to pursue. Coming back to your question, I am going to answer it very objectively. IIT Madras is a good choice from the learning perspective whereas IIM is a good choice from ROI perspective. You are smart enough to gauge the situation. If it’s the money you are after IIM is for you but if it’s the knowledge you are seeking, IIT it is.
