Before choosing a college, try to make sure what you are really interested in. If it is MS then don’t go for any IIM. This is because you can pursue an MBA later in life if MS did not work for you. But you will not get the chance to choose Ms after your MBA. Also since it’s your area of interest, chances are you might find your talents and may want to work on them. Now if you are sure about the course but confused about the IIMs, I will give you my honest opinion. The new IIMs are enjoying fame and glory owing to the achievements of their predecessors alone. They haven’t done much to attain the level of older IIMs. These new IIMs are poorly organized. The faculty is below average, the infrastructure is substandard and the teaching is pathetic. Yet they are here to claim the coveted IIM tag. So if you are someone for whom the tag of IIM and its high placement matters only, you can surely go for a new IIM. But if you value education over institutions then base your decision on research.

IIMs welcome students from all over India. But the students from South or North-East India find it rather difficult to first travel to Delhi and then travel by Road or Rail to Kashipur. They prefer their comfort over anything. The other reason is that most IIMs have been able to establish a uniqueness about themselves. IIM Kashipur lacks in this aspect. IIM Rohtak is the oldest and closest to NCR, IIM Udaipur attracts students based on MHRD ratings, IIM Trichy made itself known as a CFA Recognised Institute under the Institute University Recognition Programme and IIM Ranchi has the best placement opportunities. IIM Kashipur has failed to market itself on a particular aspect and thus is underestimated.

Go for it if you can afford to lose the money. If not, dont be disappointed. Just consider placements for the evaluation, as the location and life are both beautiful. Placements at IIM Kashipur have an obvious advantage, but only for the top 10% of the batch will it make a significant difference. Otherwise, youll do well at both locations. Furthermore, if youre looking for future entitlement, it makes little difference. IIM Kashipur is the newest, and IIM Sambalpur is the youngest. If you build a strong profile for yourself, the location between these two IIMs will not hold much value in the future. As a result, if you can afford to lose the money, do so without hesitation. If you cant afford to lose that money, forget it and you will have no regrets.

How good is IIM Kashipur?

Honestly, IIM Kashipur does not do justice to the other IIMs in its worth. Under the pretext of being an IIM it has gained little fame but the reality is far from different. Ques. How are hostel facilities at IIM Kashipur?

Ans. With all the operations being shifted to the new campus, each student is provided with a single room. Each floor has one common room and 6 rooms with basic amenities like water purifier, refrigerator, microwave, washing machine. The bathroom is equipped with a 24x7 hot water facility and a personal balcony. The hostel blocks are minutes away from academic buildings which save quite a lot of time on a rigorous day.

The rooms have a bed, table, chair, bookshelf, and a large almirah. All the rooms and the common room have radiant cooling installed which keeps the temperature at an optimum level, be it summers or winter. The hostel rooms are provided with Wi-Fi on each floor and students even get the facility of ethernet ports in their own room which gives speeds up to 200Mbps.

The rooms are cleaned every day by dedicated cleaning and maintenance staff. There is an infrastructure committee handled by 14-16 students which looks up all the issues pertaining to the hostel facilities and solve them within 24 hours. The medical staff and counselor are available in hostels. The night canteens and basic necessity shops are within the hostels only and make it easier for everyone to make the purchases without leaving the campus.
