Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must have passed class 12 from any recognized board. Candidates having passed any exam equivalent to class 12 are also eligible to apply.

The candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the Class 12 examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in the Class 12/qualifying examination. The candidate is also required to pass each of the subjects of the Class 12 / qualifying examination.

Students need to qualify for the JEE examination

Course Details

IIT, Kanpur offers a special dual degree program in various specialization. Candidates can apply for a dual degree in order to pursue Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in the same department or Bachelor’s in any department with MBA.

The applications are invited twice in a year in the month of April and November every year. The candidates can apply online by visiting the official website of the institute.

Is IIT Guwahati becoming the next IIT Kanpur?

Both IIT Guwahati and IIT Kanpur are well-respected institutions, known for their high-quality education and research. Comparing the two is already justified and saying that one institution is becoming the next of the other is more so. Both institutions have their strengths and areas of expertise. Yet, if I was to choose one I would have always gone for IIT Kanpur.

Some points that favor my preference are as follows:

The quality of coursework at IIT Kanpur is extremely challenging and will keep you on your toes always. It offers the best quality of education and you will learn much more than other IITs if you are regular to classes and take your academics seriously,
The usual schedule of a student at IIT Kanpur is not always jammed, unlike the general opinion. The timings of the clubs align with the classes and you can take out time for both if you are good at managing your time well.
Another challenging aspect of IIT Kanpur is its tough grading system, (10,8,6,4..) under which anything below 10 is 8. Thus you are under tremendous pressure to maintain your CGPA and is enough of a motivating factor.

Overall, even if Guwahati was to be compared to IIT Kanpur, it still has a long way to go until it becomes the next IIT Kanpur.

Why does IIT Kanpur not allow laptops in first year?

IIT Kanpur has a strange policy of not allowing laptops in the first year. This might sound weird because all assignments and research work are done via laptops. But in reality, you will find enough computers in the labs for everyone.

The major purpose of this policy was to encourage students to socialize and spend less screen time. Developing relations is a crucial part of college life which many pay less importance to because of the increasing technology.

This strategy was adopted to prevent waste of time and utilize your time at IIT to the fullest. Many may find it absurd, but it’s very beneficial, especially for freshers who are prone to distractions.

Is IIT Kharagpur better than IIT Kanpur?

Almost all IITs are excellent engineering colleges providing the best education and amenities. Yet there might be some comparisons that can be drawn based on common aspects like choice, infrastructure, and geographical location. Eventually, it’s a matter of your preferences and not the institute's worth.

For example, if you are someone who considers Academics the most important factor to determine the credibility of an institute, then IIT Kanpur is the best choice for you. It has the toughest grading system and the entire focus is on studies. So if you are excellent in academics, you will remain at the top here.

Both institutes face a certain level of locational disadvantage but IIT Kanpur is still slightly better in this aspect.

IIT Kanpur has concluded its phase 1 of placements with 250 national & international recruiters visiting the campus. 1128 jobs were secured and 74 international offers were made. The number of PPOs received was 208. The highest domestic salary stood at INR 1.9 CPA.

What should I choose between IIT-Kanpur CSE and IIT Madras CSE?

You should choose IIT Madras CSE. Being a metro city, Chennai has an edge over Kanpur. It will be easier to get resources, internships, projects, and placements. IIT Madras has a smaller batch size. So, it’s easier for students to communicate with teachers. If you are interested in Machine Learning and AI, then IITM will be the better option. CSE Prof. Balaraman Ravindran has been featured in reputed business magazines.

IIT Madras placements are excellent for CSE. Students of the branch usually receive an average CTC of around INR 17.54 LPA.

On an overall scale, IIT Madras is better. It is an old IIT with a great placement record.

IIT Madras Research park is one of a kind. It is the first university-based research park in India. IITM collaborates with many industries for R&D.
The institute has an excellent start-up culture. If you have a good start-up idea, you will get the guidance and resources required from the institute.
IIT Madras placements are great. During the 2022 placement drive, the highest CTC stood around INR 1.98 CPA. The average CTC for the institute is INR 21.48 LPA.
IIT Madras offers an enviable campus life. The fests and clubs are amazing.

IIT Madras campus used to be a part of Guindy national park. Spotting deers, monkeys, wildcats, and blackbucks running around the campus is an everyday event.

Campus: IITK has one of the most beautiful campuses decked with greenery. IIT Kanpur sprawls over 1959 acres and is like a city in itself. The campus is a haven for nature lovers and Lea moms roaming around is a common occurrence.
Academics: Academically, IIT Kanpur is known for its strenuous workload and peer pressure. But in reality, it has a very flexible culture. There are no attendance policies or bans on the Internet.
Campus life: Numerous cultural activities make campus life lively and exciting. There is always something to do and explore. The extracurricular activities cover various fields like dance, music science, and technology.
Festivals: Antaragni and Techkriti fests organized by IIT Kanpur are the best in the country. Unlike other IITs, these fests are held during college days and not vacations.
Counselling Service: The counseling service caters to the student's emotional problems and keeps the suicidal rates in check. It makes the students feel at ease and gives them a homely feeling.

The life of an MTech student at IIT Kanpur varies from person to person depending on what activities he involves himself in and his interests and passions. Overall, college life is good and you can even save money from the stipend you receive as an MTech student.

MTech students do not have to pay for hostels and are liable to pay for mess charges and canteen only. There are other food facilities available inside the campus, offering food at subsidiary rates.

Academics are a bit tough and one needs to adopt a focused attitude else they will end up suggesting during exams.

The campus life at IIT Kanpur is very dynamic with many cultural fests (Antarangi, Udghosh) , tech fests (Techkriti) organized by the institute, and many more.

Overall, the life of an MTech student at IIT Kanpur is filled with fun and a lot of opportunities.

How is the life of an M.Tech student at IIT Kanpur?

IIT Kanpur maintains an excellent record of offering the finest placements. Owing to the strict admission criteria only the best students are granted admission to IIT Kanpur.

M.Tech course offered is very challenging and requires a full-time commitment. Moreover, companies and even professors prefer BTech students over MTech students. At IIT Kanpur, you will be left with little or no time to enjoy the beautiful campus life. The students are so busy with academics that they have no time to explore themselves and get involved in extracurricular activities. You will find BTech students participating in every activity and every event.

The situation of MTech students is very pathetic and people mostly give up right after BTech. Their placements are rarely a matter of discussion and the program itself isn’t given much importance.
