IIM Ahmedabad offers an excellent opportunity to students willing to pursue Phd programs across 11 specialization areas. The specialization areas include Agriculture, Marketing, Finance and Accounting, Strategy, HR Management, Information Systems and so on.

To be eligible to get an admission into the Phd programs, one must have a valid CAT score (taken in the last two years) or any of the other exams like GRE, GMAT, GATE, UGC- JRF, UGC-NET JRF. Later, the students shall be selected on the basis of their Academic Background, Work Experience and final rounds of Personal interviews(PI).

The Ph.D. candidates have to appear for CAT or any other standardized exam. The selection is based on the CAT/ standardized exam and the personal interview. The exams accepted for specialization into various courses are mentioned below:

IIM Ahmedabad Admission: How to Apply for PhD?

The candidates can visit the official website and get the online application form and brochure. They fill up the application form will all the required details and can apply for a maximum of two areas of specialization. After completing the application form, they will have to pay an application fee of INR 500.

Ques. Does IIM Ahmedabad provide a PhD Fellowship?

Ans. Yes, IIM Ahmedabad provides Comprehensive Fellowship to its Ph. D students, which covers all expenses such as tuition, library, computer, medical insurance, alumni fees, and placement. Students will also receive a monthly allowance of which the details are listed below:

INR 37,700 granted for the First Year and Second Year Ph. D Students
INR 40,700 was granted to the students after completing the comprehensive examination.
INR 45,200 granted to the students after submitting the TAC approved thesis proposal.
INR 25,000 per year will be granted to the students to cover research expenses, expenses on books, photocopying etc. This will be given for 5 years.
Students can also get upto INR 1,75,000 to cover expenses to attend international conferences, workshops or summer school

Ques. Does the IIM Ahmedabad offer PhD admissions to foreign candidates?

Ans. Yes, IIMA permits the admission of foreign candidates. Such candidates must appear for the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT), followed by an Interview.

Ques. Can a candidate apply for more than one specialization at IIM Ahmedabad?

Ans. Yes. A candidate can apply for a maximum of two specializations, but in that case, he/ she will have to pay the application fee separately for each.

Ques. Does IIM Ahmedabad provide accommodation facilities to PhD students?

Ans. Yes, accommodation facilities are offered to both single and married students. For single students there are 30 well-furnished dormitories. The institute also offers housing facilities for married couples within the campus.

Ans. Yes. Students are allowed to change their area of specialization. However, they can only do so during the first year provided that they fulfil a certain criteria.

In 2021, the required cutoff for IIM Ahmedabad was 99-100. But just scoring 100 percentile in CAT, won’t get you an interview call. You must satisfy the eligibility criteria in terms of 10th, 12th, Graduation marks, and CAT percentile. The shortlist for an interview is made by considering past academic performance and CAT percentile. So, if your past academic record is poor, you may not get a call for an interview, even with a 100 percentile.

The interview panelists are genuinely interested to know how you made the most of your break. You should be honest while replying to this question. You can simply answer that you needed more time for preparation. During your break year, you can do volunteer work during weekends or learn something new. If you opted out of campus placements, you can do research projects or internships with your professor. You can do some certification or take examinations, in your field of interest, such as CFA/FRM. These will help showcase that you have spent your time productively.

Life at IIM Ahmedabad is much more than academics. A typical day on the campus starts around 8:15 am for most students. They usually grab something to eat on their way to class. The lectures start at 8:45 am sharp. If you are late, you won’t be able the attend your lecture that day. Lectures go on till 1:10 pm. Students spend around 45 minutes wondering whether they have a surprise quiz that day or not. The notification regarding the surprise quiz comes around 1:45 pm from the academic office. Students who get quizzes start last min prep. Others enjoy their lunch. Quiz usually goes on till 3:15 pm. During afternoon, some take a nap, some students engage in club activities or sports. After dinner, students do their assignments, group projects, class preparation for the next day. This usually takes up until 2 am, even some more time on certain days. This is how the cycle repeats.
