Yes, IIM Amritsar is worth joining. It has the best placement record among the baby IIMs. During 2022 campus drive, IIM Amritsar placements had an average CTC of INR 14.63 LPA.
Amritsar is well-connected to all parts of India through railways and airlines. The locational advantage plays a crucial role in the development of the institute.
IIM Amritsar has a good faculty base. Most of the faculty members are alumni of reputed B-Schools in India like MDI, FMS, IIFT, etc.
The student crowd is diverse. You will meet students from IIT, NIT, Sate Govt. colleges, central university, etc. The peer learning opportunities are endless.
My brother has offers from Bodhgaya as well as Amritsar but chose the former for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons have been listed below
IIM Bodh Gaya is a perfect blend of academic rigor, and opportunities for growth and extracurricular activities and thus should be preferred over IIM Amritsar. As far as IIT Roorkee is concerned, MBA is best done from a Business School as the environment is an important factor that is lacking in the case of an engineering college like IIT Roorkee.
You should choose IMT Ghaziabad Marketing. The institute has quite a reputation for their marketing branch. TMT G has an excellent faculty base for Marketing. The strategic location near Delhi NCR and the well-developed alumni network in the marketing sectors are some of the other reasons that make IMT Ghaziabad a better option.
During IMT Ghaziabad placements 2022, around 40% of the students got placed in the marketing sector. The average CTC received by the students of this specialization is INR 11 LPA.

There were 2 panelists a male and a female. They asked him to talk about himself and he gave a general introduction. They also asked him why he resigned from his job and what he did in the meantime. Once they were aware of his personal situation, they asked the following questions
They ended the interview by asking if he had any questions from them after which they asked him to leave.
It depends on your profile. If you are a general category student with good academic records - more than 85 percent throughout 10th, 12th, and graduation, then old IIMs will be better.
If you aren’t getting the old IIMs, you can consider new IIMs like IIM Nagpur, Sambalpur, Vizag, Amritsar, Sirmaur, and Bodhgaya. Being part of any recently established institute is a different experience altogether. You will get to set the culture on campus which your juniors will inherit. These baby IIMs have decent placements. You will get placement opportunities through campus drive if you have a good academic record. Here are the average CTC statistics for these IIMs.
Institute | Average CTC |
IIM Nagpur | INR 15.21 LPA |
IIM Vizag | INR 15.06 LPA |
IIM Amritsar | INR 14.63 LPA |
IIM Sirmaur | INR 12.74 LPA |
IIM Bodhgaya | INR 12.36 LPA |
IIM Sambalpur | INR 12.64 LPA |
If you are willing to work hard and want to take advantage of opportunities that come with newly established institutes, then you should join these new IIMs.
My cousin recently got into IIM Amritsar with a profile of 8/7/7. She did not let her low grades discourage her and she strived hard to get a great CAT score. Don’t let your past affect your future prospects. Put your 100% effort and you will definitely get what you deserve. As far as her graduation score is concerned, not many scored above 8 GPA. So her 7 GPA wasn’t that bad. In class 12th also, most of the IIMs compare a score of 80 in the Assam board to an 80 in the Andhra board or CBSE. Engineers also face an academic diversity issue. So they need a higher percentile than other graduates. Nowadays IIMs are converting CAT percentiles to the percentage for the CAT weightage component. So, the gap between the 99 and 95 percentile stoops down to 2 points for 50 % CAT weightage. Had the CAT scores been taken, the gap would have been 10–12 points. Hence it makes candidates with low academic profiles difficult to get into IIM. Fortunately, my cousin was lucky enough to get admission as a GEM fresher with an average profile.
I think Great Lakes is a better option than IIM Amritsar. The following points support my opinion
Although my opinion is strongly against IIM Amritsar, it’s only because it’s a new IIM. Any older IIM is a better choice than IIT. MBA is all about investment and ROI which is great in the case of older IIMs. I have still seen many people choose Amritsar over IIT just because of the IIM tag. So do what your heart says.

IIM Amritsar is a newly established IIM and is not yet in the league of the IIM family. Despite that, its placement statistics are better than at Nirma University. IIM Amritsar is the 15th Indian Institute of Management being set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development with the support of the Government of Punjab. IIM Amritsar has a small batch size in comparison to Nirma University. The programs offered at both the B Schools are different.
Looking at the 2 options provided by you, I can say IIM Amritsar is definitely a better choice. I have seen many people regret going for CGL.
Excise Inspector is the worst post of CGL and many of them retire as superintendents themselves. The transfer is banned in CBIC so no matter which remote area you have been posted to, you have to stay there for 15-20 years until you become Assistant Commissioner which is rare.
You can change your life in two ways
You can become a CEO through the second option. I have many acquaintances who left the CGL and went for CAT and today are entrepreneurs or CEOs. Surely the job at CGL provides security but the job itself is not worth it.
