NID is conducted for admissions to Bachelor of Design (B.Des.), Master of Design (M.Des.) and Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (GDPD). It is held every year by National Institute of Design (NID). It is held in two stages: 1) DAT Prelims and 2) DAT Mains. This year, NID 2020 Main is scheduled for April 29 to May 3, 2020. 

Admission to the desired programme is based on the score the candidate obtains in the first, second and third round of the NID Selection Process. DAT exam is conducted across India at different examination centres. The candidates should keep in mind that a mere appearance in DAT exam as well as getting a rank in DAT exam won’t ensure a seat for him/her at NID. DAT exam is conducted to check the candidate’s capability to become a potential designer.

DAT Prelims for B.Des. and M.Des:

• The B.Des. DAT prelims paper is a 3 hour test of 100 marks which evaluates the Design aptitude of the candidate. It comprises of a mix of objective and subjective questions 
• The M.Des. DAT prelims paper is of 2 ½ hour duration and 100 marks, comprising of a Common Design Aptitude Test and a faculty-specific Domain Test, which together evaluate the Design aptitude of the candidate.

DAT Mains for B.Des. and M.Des:

• The B.Des DAT Mains will consist of tests in multiple formats such in a studio set up. The tests will be conducted over two days. The total marks of the test will be out of 100 in English.
• The M.Des. DAT Mains consists of two parts: A) Studio Test and B) Interviews. Total marks of Studio Test will be out of 100 and the duration will be of three hours in English. The interviews will be conducted separately for each discipline, immediately after the Studio Test, and at the same center as the Studio Test.

After qualifying the first stage of examination, the candidates have to appear for the second and third round which will be from Ahmadabad, Bangalore and Gandhi Nagar campus. The final results will be announced by the Vijayawada campus.

NID Exam Preparation Tips

Candidates can refer to some of the most essential preparation tips for NID. They are listed below:

• Be Creative

First of all, don’t worry much. DAT exams are designed in such a way that for all those people who have a creative side in them can crack this exam easily.

• Time Management

You have to solve the problems fast so that you can answer all the questions. The candidates have to complete the exam within 3 hours. The question paper consists of 100 mark questions and it consists of both objective and subjective type questions.

• Prepare for Current Affairs

Even though it is an Aptitude test conducted for Designing they give importance to current affairs also. So, if you guys don’t want to lose marks the go and study all those current affairs from the past 2 years.

• Develop Speed and Accuracy

Candidates have to develop their Speed and Accuracy so that they can score well in the exam. So, the aspirants of NID exam have to practice a lot to improve their speed in sketching as well as in thinking. A candidate will get very less time to answer each question. So, what you have to do is that solve previous year practice papers and sketch a lot. Never let your hand free. Always sketch something or the other.

• Go for sketching rather than writing down

If you are able to sketch the answers then it will be more beneficial than writing down the answers. It has got several benefits. One main thing is that it saves you time. More than that if you can perceive an idea in your mind and if you are able to draw it on your answer sheet, then it will give a better picture to the evaluators.

Preparation Schedule

Preparation is highly important for an exam like NID.Here you have to go through the previous year papers and to solve them as fast as possible.You should firstly make a timetable and have to work accordingly.The aspirants of this exam have to practise a lot before going to write the exam. There are not much to revise in this section. Go and practise sketching again and again. That is all what you need to qualify the examination.

Keep the following things in mind:

• The more you practice the better
• Do lots of sketching
• During the studio test they will be giving you some material. You have to show them what they needed using that material. That can be a clay, terracotta or any other thing. So practise using them.
• Use colours. They add more value.

• You have to practise previous year papers.
• Improve your sketching skills. It is not that tough.
• Try using different materials and make different things.
• Improve your G.K. Because in DAT test as well as in personal interview they are going to ask you some questions related to current affairs.

• Don’t waste your time for sitting with one question.
• Solve as many questions as possible.
• If you are just studying and not doing any sketching works then they will cost, you a lot in your exam. You have to put your hands into it. Then only you will be able to understand your mistakes.
