National Institute of Design reserves some share of its seats for candidates belonging to OBC (NCL), SC/ST, and PwD categories. Moreover, 10% of its B.Des/GDPD and M.Des seats are reserved for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in all the campuses taking admissions through NID DAT 2023.
The candidates seeking admission under the NID reservation are required to produce the required documents at the time of admission. Also, once a candidate has chosen a category at the time of the application form submission, he/she is not allowed to change it at any point in time. The category documents must also be produced in time as no provisional admission shall be granted to any candidate until the documents are submitted to the authorities.

All the candidates applying for the admissions must mention their respective categories in the application form. The candidates form belonging to the Economically Backward Section, Other Backward Classes – Non-Creamy layer, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes, and foreign nationals are provided with a reservation of seats in the admission to the courses.

Note: The candidates belonging to the Other Backward Classes- Creamy Layer are not entitled to any reservation. The candidates belonging to the OBC-CL category are considered as general category candidates. The benefit of reservation is given to only those castes and tribes that are mentioned in the central list of the corresponding states as issued by the Government of India.

The candidates belonging to the reserved categories and who wish to avail the reservation are required to produce a prescribed caste/tribe certificate (preferably in English) from the competent authorities of the respective states/union territories/national commission of tribes. The candidates who belong to the OBC-NCL category, however, will have to produce a prescribed caste certificate (preferably in English) from the competent authorities of the respective states/union territories certifying that they do not belong to the creamy layer. OBC-NCL certificate will be valid only if is attained after April 1, 2023.
The NID reservation policy also keeps a provision for reservation to the candidates belonging to the Differently abled categories. The Persons with Disability (PwD) will be given a 3% horizontal reservation of seats from the parent category in each programme cutting across all sections i.e. SCs, STs, OBCs (Non-Creamy only) and General category.
To avail the NID reservation the candidate has to keep in mind that it will be provided to only those candidates who have 40% or more category as per the rules and guidelines issued by the Government of India. These candidates who are seeking to avail the reservation under the PwD category are required to produce a Disability Certificate issued by the competent Medical Authority, Govt. of India, at the time of accepting the admissions offer.

The NID DAT 2023 reservation policy also has a provision for reservation to the candidates who belong to any country other than India. Any candidate belonging to the nationality of any other county than the Republic of India is eligible to apply for the NID DAT 2023 reservation in the category of Overseas Category.
There is a provision for 15% reservation of supernumerary seats in B.Des. and M.Des. Programmes. The candidates belonging to the NRI category (Non-Resident of India) shall be required to apply as Indian Citizens. However, the foreign passport holders with a valid PIO or OCI status do get a choice of applying under either the Indian or the overseas category. The candidates applying for the overseas category with a valid PIO shall have to pay the fee as per the fee decided for the Foreign Citizens.
The final allotment of seats will be done after the final merit list of Overseas Category which shall be prepared after the completion of all the three stages of the admission process. To accept the offer of admission the candidate will have to appear in person at the respective campus of NID and will be required to produce the attested copies and the original documents as mentioned in the list below:
The candidates holding the foreign passports will have to apply for the visa for the duration of the course beforehand and before the commencement of the program. The foreign nationals who apply for the overseas category under the NID reservation are not allowed to apply for any other category.
