Tips and Tricks For Attempting JEE Main 2020 Questions the Right Way

Here are a few general suggestions that will help the aspirants get a good score in the examination:

• Accurate Section Attempting Order: The first tip, given by Mr. Ramesg Batlish who is a FIITJEE expert, is to attempt the exam in the following order - First Chemistry, then Maths and Physics last. The rationale behind this is that Chemistry has more fact-based questions and the level of logical questions rises from Chemistry to Maths to Physics. It is easier to solve questions that are fact-based than solving those questions which involve calculations. This will help the students in securing some marks before moving forward to the tougher parts which have higher chances of negative marking. As per the analysis of previous years’ trends, it was found that students usually prefer attempting Chemistry first and then move to Maths or Physics. However, the students’ strength in each subject also plays an important role here. A candidate who has a better hold on Mathematics would prefer attempting that section first

• Segregation of Questions: There are some questions that are put under the category of ‘easy questions’. There are around 30 such questions that would help the students with securing 120 marks if all answers are correct and more than 100 marks even if there are a few incorrect answers. 100 marks will play a very important role in securing a good rank, possibly helping the students to be in the top 2,00,000 candidates. This would secure their qualification for the JEE Advanced examination. The candidates need to identify these questions and make sure to solve them accurately before moving ahead to attempting tougher questions.

• NCERT, the best source: Solve as many questions as possible in the NCERT books and make sure to read through concepts well from these books. Students can also make personal notes of important concepts from Chemistry and Modern Physics. Check JEE Main Syllabus

• Substitution and Elimination: A good tip for some portion (20-25%) of questions in the Mathematics section is using the substitution and elimination method. This means that the candidates need to substitute the answer from the multiple choices in the question and then eliminate the wrong answers. This does not require any extra time for calculation and will almost always give the correct answer. There are also some questions where the answers can be eliminated by using logic. 

• Topics with Maximum Weightage: To attempt the right questions, the students need to keep in mind which are the important topics and sections in the subjects where they can score the maximum number of marks. The first thing is to know exactly what part of the syllabus is relevant and which are the topics that can be left untouched. All such topics are mentioned below for the candidates’ reference:

Chemistry - There is equal weightage given to Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry in the question paper. Inorganic chemistry has the most fact-based questions as they are direct questions of concept knowledge. So, it is always easier to start attempting the questions of inorganic chemistry first. This would cover topics like the classification of elements, P-block, S-Block, coordination chemistry, and periodicity in the property. The other topics that the students should focus on, from organic and numerical Chemistry, are - Periodic table, Carbonyl compounds and their derivatives, Redox reactions, thermochemistry, chemical bonding, the concept of equivalents, among others.

Maths - This is the most predictable section in the question paper as very similar kinds of questions are repeated every year. In mathematics, the maximum weightage is given to Algebra and then Calculus. To score good marks in the Mathematics section of the JEE Main 2020, students should focus on the important topics of the examination based on the previous years' papers analysis. Some of these topics that can help the students get a good start in the section, by securing some marks, are quadratic equations, metrices, and determinants, trigonometry, calculus, and probability. Out of these topics, some are very simple and can be easily solved like finding the rank of a matrix, solving a quadratic equation. 

Physics - In Physics, maximum weightage is given to Mechanics (35%) followed by 20% weightage to Current, Electricity, and Electromagnetic Induction. While Physics is the toughest section out of all three in the JEE Main 2020 paper, there are a few topics that can help the students score easy marks which will ensure that their overall score is strong. These topics that contribute around 10-15% of the questions are nuclear physics, atomic physics, vectors, kinematics, work, energy, and power. These questions can be solved using a direct formula and do not involve a lot of calculation. The other topics in Physics that are very important to practice are fluid mechanics, magnetism, heat and thermodynamics, rotational dynamics, simple harmonic motion, the centre of mass, and other similar topics.

• Previous Year Papers: The most common yet most effective tip is to solve previous years' question papers and analyze the results to understand the topics that are your strengths as well as topics you are comparatively weak in. This will then help you in determining which questions should you attempt first and secure some marks.

• Maintain Accuracy: The students are advised not to focus a lot of energy on their weak areas. Attempting such questions would take up more time and the accuracy rate will also be lesser. It is easier to score higher if there is minimum negative marking. 

• Don’t Overattempt: Another thing that the students need to keep in mind is not to over attempt the question paper. The number of correct answers has more weightage than the number of attempted questions. They need to attempt only those questions which they are confident in and focus on solving them accurately. Solving extra questions will only waste time and additionally increase the chances of negative marking. Skipping the questions which seem too difficult will also allow the candidates to dedicate more time to the questions that they find easier to solve.

• Time management: Question Identification and Revision: A piece of important advice for the candidates is to manage their time very efficiently in such a way that there is enough time left to check all the attempted questions once more and rectify any possible errors. Out of 3 hours, 15 minutes of time needs to be dedicated to revisiting the attempted questions and 15 minutes at the start to identify the easy questions that need to be attempted right at the start.

The last, but not the least, tip that we have to give to the candidates is not to panic and keep calm while solving the question paper. Getting distracted or nervous will take the attention away from the questions and that would lead to questions being solved in a hurry. This decreases the chances of landing at accurate answers.
