After the announcement of the result, all the participating institutes along with IIMs release their separate cut off list. Candidates score equal or more than cut off marks are only eligible to get admission in their desired institute. Check CAT Cut Off

Only the candidates with good fortune grab a seat in most prestigious B-school of India, the IIMs. There is a total of 20 IIM’s that operate in our country and attaining a seat in any one of them is no cakewalk! Carrying a stellar reputation of being the best Management institute in India, this elite group of all the IIM’s, is obviously the first preference of all candidates.

IIM Selection Criteria through CAT

In order to get admitted to such a prestigious institute, your preparation must be exceptional. We all know how rigorous the IIM Selection Process is. More or less, all the IIM’s follow the same selection stages as given below:

Stage I- CAT Score

Your CAT Score is the first and foremost shortlisting criterion. Nearly 2 lac candidates appear for the CAT each year. Candidates are selected on the basis of a minimum set CAT Percentile by the IIM’s. Only the candidates above the following minimum cut-offs in the sectional percentile ranks, the overall percentile rank and obtaining a positive (greater than zero) raw score in all sections of CAT Exam are considered for all the subsequent stages.

Category Verbal and Reading Comprehension percentile rank (PVRC) Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning percentile rank (PDILR) Quantitative Aptitude percentile rank (PQA) Overall percentile rank (PT)
General 70 70 70 80
NC-OBC-cum-transgender 65 65 65 75
SC 60 60 60 70
ST 50 50 50 60
PWD (Except ST) 60 60 60 70
PWD (ST) 50 50 50 60

The IIM’s believe in an academically diverse class, where they lay out a considerable weightage to both- academics and work experience. IIM Ahmedabad has also allowed freshers to take deferred admissions. This could possibly be a signal to accommodating more candidates with work experience.

Stage II- Written Ability Test/ Personal Interview

Almost all the IIM’s have replaced the GD round with the Written Ability Test (WAT). The increasing competition and limited time made the IIM’s take this new move. The WAT comprises of one or more topics on which a candidate is required to write a brief essay. The time duration assigned to write an essay on the given topic varies from IIM to IIM and can be anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes.

Each interviewer will use the PI and WAT to comprehensively evaluate the candidate’s ability to fit in and benefit from the PGP programme. The evaluating committee would assess the performance of the candidates in the PI process and make a final offer. There will be no quota or fixed number of seats for such candidates. There will also be no wait-lists for the same reason.

Stage III- Final Admission

Once the CAT result and the WAT/PI results are declared, the names of the shortlisted candidates will be marked. The names of the candidates eligible for admission into the IIM’s will be displayed on the official website of the different IIM’s. Although every IIM has a different selection criteria, but they generally take the CAT Entrance Exam Score, academic history and your interview performance into consideration. If you are successful in satisfying all the above criteria, you are most likely getting a seat in any one of these institutes.
